"A Handful of Piano Picks"
Ram
Unbelievable Melodic Sense!!!
சரணத்தின் போது Bangos துவங்கும். நடுநடுவே Accordian தூவல்கள். பாடலில் "Surprise Elements" வைப்பது மெல்லிசை மாமன்னரின் தனிச்சிறப்பு. மகத்துவமும் கூட. தபேலாவுடன் "இந்த காலம் உதவி செய்ய" என்று தொடங்கும் வரி, எவரும் எதிர்பார்த்திராத ஒன்று. மீண்டும் பியானோ ரிதம் தொடங்கும்- "இசையிலே மிதக்கலாம்" என்ற வரியின் போது;

_________________ Saradha Prakash |

SIMPLY SUPERB !
You know , for me , the best part of the song is as you mentioned
THE PIANO WHICH RESUMES WHEN TMS SINGS - ISAIYILE MIDHAKALAM , EDHAYUME MARAKALAAM !
And he has used the chorus voice as CHORDS
That sudden tabla stepping in after TMS completes KADHAL AMUDHAI POZIYALAAM ,
suddenly TABLA WILL TAKE OVER IN BRIEF which is another sensational / unexpected surprise package !
This is his signature I presume !
Well well well, there is no boundary to the Master's CREATIVITY .
HE WAS WAY AHEAD OF TIMES AND WAS ALSO A TREND SETTER ! |

Dear Ram,
Excellent start to a great thread. But how could you forget "My Piano Man MSV" collection???? Anyway great going. Ennai Theriyumaa is one of the best orchestrated song boldly composed by our Master Creator way back in the 60's itself. That reminds me to ascertain here that - No one ever from the Indian film industry has used Piano so extensively like our Mellisai Maamannar. What a great creator this little wonder is Ram!!!!!!!!!!!! Expecting more on the Piano.........

Dear Ram and Sharadha Madam,
Such discussions make the forum very informative and interesting. I also request for such useful discussions only in Tamil, which makes it very lively. People who have that facility in their PC, please continue to do so.

Dear Ram,
Beautiful, Step-by-step analysis. Hats off to your nice Tamizh.
One of the Greatest songs. This is yet another song in which the musical demigod has marvelled, fluently flowing between a Major 'Ga' & and a Minor 'Ga' within Milliseconds within a few traces of Words could finish.
"Vungal Kavalai marakka Kavidhai Paadum"
Basically a dominant Major (Predominantly Sankaraabharanam) song, the giant navigates in a milli fraction to Minor Ga in all the three underlined words :
"Saa Saa Ri2 Ga1 Saa Ri2 Ga1 Saa Ri2 Ga1 Saa Da2 Pa Daa2"
This has truly given the song a glorious western Glamour required for the situation. Same he does in the previous line
"Naan Siritthu Pazhagi Karutthai Kavarum".... but this time he does this same millisecond glory by flowing to Ni1, in a song which has a dominant Ni2.
One thing which makes me wonder always : All the other MDs (including the present day Acoustic-Editors) toil so much with complex musical links (probably with an intention of driving their musical supremacy !!!?**) only resulting in driving away the pleasantness and glory of the Music itself (ofcourse...driving away some glorious fans like all of you here)
But look here... this greatest Legend has used simplest graph of notations to make the Violin Interlude phenomenal... the Violin that follows the Lyric "Vungal Rasigan!...Vungal Rasigan!..." & the Link "Daa1 Paa Daa1 Paa Saaaaaaa" (Accordian, I think)
"Gaa2 Ga2 Ma1 Paa PaDa2 - Saa Sa Da2 Paaaaaaa
Saa Sa Ri2 Gaa2 Ga2Ma1 - Gaa2 Ga2 Ri2 Saaaaaa" (followed by Oru Silaiyai Kandaenae!...)
One and Only MSV can do this...because,... to compose, all others have to go after Swaras... Here, it is the Swaras which que up, pleading this greatest Legend to give them a chance to serve.
With Love

From different angle- identification of genre perspective, the composition glows with BLUES melody with fine jazzy touch too!
Indulge in the musical feast while paying attention to the ‘elements of the compostion’ (if you can, try it!)
Slow, danceable ’ Leader / Chorus call & response’ Melody format of BLUES(AA’B pattern AA’ is the call repeated once with variation, B is the response).
Continuous, Steady guitar strumming rhythm.
Wind instrument giving rhythmic gestures to the vocalist’s melodic improvisations.
Solo vocalist supported with reassuring/responding chorale improvisations + vocalese(a style of Jazz singing-uses lyrics with improvization).
Interludes highlighted with ‘scat singing’- vocalizing non-sense syllables with improvisations - identity of genre JAZZ .
Spectacular polyphonic ensemble delivering breezy JAZZ interludes!
Ears/mind/heart filled with rich musical sounds never heard before...
Let me go over the song why it carries elements of JAZZ...
1. Composition starts with ‘Leader / chorus call respond’ format with a gutar strumming rhythm.
‘Ennai theriyumaa.....’
What I explain here AA’B format is
Vocalist A- ‘ennai theriyumaa...’ melodic improvisation, while guitar strumming rhythm supports.
Again Vocalist A’ - ‘ennai theriyumaa... ’ with melodic improvisations continuing the pallavi lines while steady continuous rhythm going, joined by B- chorus response. In JAZZ genre we don’t call it as humming here.
Vocalist A’ - ---‘Ennai theriyumaa.... .... karuthai kavarum rasigan yennai theriyumaa’
Chorale B - response.
Vocalist A’ -----‘ungal kavalai marakka......kavingan yennai theriyumaa’
chorale B response.
Rhythm section continued to be taken care of guitar strumming.
2. Wind instrument giving rhythmic gestures to the vocalist’s melodic improvisations.
What do I mean by that..
After the AA’B format of the pallavi, it continous as
Vocalist A ---- ‘ennai theriyumaa....... kavingan yennai theriyumaa’ singing with melodic improvizations, this time wind instrument giving rhythmic gestures .
Vocalist ------‘nalla rasigan ungal rasigan.....’ Completes with rhythmic gestures. (I believe it is called 12 bar format! Knowledgables correct me!)
3. Before we march to the interludes..
Polyphonic passages traditionally played by one or more of these instruments in genre JAZZ!
Sax
Trumpet
Guitar
Accordian(wind instrument)
piano
Drums (untraditional branch out of ‘tabla’ noted in this song.)
vocals.
Shri.MSV has liberally showered this song with this genre’s instruments.
4. Melodic passages with piano while guitar strumming rhythm decorates the first interlude.
5. Solo vocalist supported with reassuring/responding chorale improvisations + vocalese(a style of Jazz singing-uses lyrics with improvization).
Charanams ‘naan pudhumaiyaanavan....’
Solo vocalist ‘naan pudhumaiyaanavan....’ Singing with melodic improvisations, joined by chorale response- here they apply Vocalese- using lyrics with improvisations to reassure/respond the solo vocalist.
Chorale response ‘aadalam paadalam..’
Solo vocalist continued ‘vaazxhvai solai aakkalam...etc...’ rhythm continues
6.Rhythmic section predominantly taken care of guitar, drums, accordin supported by violin, piano passages.
7.Interludes highlighted with ‘scat singing’- vocalizing non-sense syllables with improvisations - identity of genre JAZZ .
Second interlude carries ‘scat singing’ along with claps, guitar strumming with violin passage completess the polyphonic presentation. This is JAZZ identity.
8. People watched the movie will find, MGR at the end invites Jayalalitha to the center stage, she dances, thus the song completes with spectacular jazz theme carried out by drums, trumpet melodic passage.
So close I believe this composition for ACCORDION JAZZ, except for that small untraditional branch out in the percussion/charanam.
From Shri.MSV - a straight forward teacher , indulge this mega orchestral glamour with different ears too. |
