When a person is pushed to a corner and about to get trapped, he / she has every reason to get so frustrated that one will burst out in agony and despair

This precisely was what portrayed in a mind blowing manner by Nadigar Thilagam and outstanding composing & luds by MSV-TKR for the landmark song ENGE NIMMADHI

Shivaji reaches a breaking point at this stage of the movie . So a special song and lyrics are required to give a precise exhibition of whats running in the mind of the affected character.

So Nadigar Thilagam himself had to explain to Kavignar Kannadasan and MSV and apparently, he had thrown his hands as a symbol of desperation towards both by shouting ENGE NIMMADHI, ENGE NIMMADHI and gesticulated . This small spark was just enough for Kavignar to create an epic of a song !

It’s the body language of a panicking guy who has very little to prove his credibility to his new found lover ( Saroja Devi ) with whom an engagement was about to be made but the re-surfacing of the first wife with a bang creates a stunning reversal of fortunes for that poor Gopal character ( Shivaji ) . Every step by him to disprove the claims of his first wife Sowcar gets neutralized by counter proofs and claims by M.R.Radha & Sowcar II who both really bamboozle NT with stunning revelations .

This spell binding song appears at the most appropriate moment of the movie . So what the song is all about :

1.Total duration - 6 minutes !
2. Length of prelude - 34 seconds !
3. The prelude includes 10 second Piano work WHICH AGAIN NEVER FEATURED IN ALL INDIA RADIO
4. This song has anupallavi also ( Enge manidhan thaan illayo part )
5. The first interludes last for 50 seconds !
6. The second interludes last for 38 seconds !

& its a breathtaking song ! amazing even today considering the fact that in the 60s, the technical developments were not that much advanced ! Listen to the song in stereophonic effect and you will feel the difference.

The chorus interludes & the manner in which The piano, violin, jalataragam , guitar, trumphets were used - ITS A PRECIOUS GEM !

This song forms part of MSV/ TKR's ALL TIME WONDERS

This 1964 release was incidentally the first movie produced under Shivaji pictures banner. More fascinating to note what other movies were around at that time – Karnan, Kai kodutha Deivam, Navarathri ( before and after ).

IMHO, this phase must be considered as the best of NT’s career. Some outstanding characters emerged out this genius .

Another aspect I noticed was that NT will look a bit bulky . This was always a subject of discussion between NT fans that this movie he was lean, during this , he had big tummy etc !

The story seems to be a mild inspiration from Chase a crooked shadow ( a 1957 release )

Dada Mirasi who also directed Sadhu Mirandal had handled the script exceedingly well and IMO, this movie should be rated as one of the best thrillers of tamil cinema.

Every aspect of the movie seemed to have been planned and executed professionally . Even the title names will have a shivering look . The Director didn’t waste time even for the titles. The movie takes off with the death of a woman supposed to have been ran over by a good train while being chased by a car and a person inside . Slowly the screen play reveals who was behind that and why. The story, about a man's past coming back to haunt him, features some nice twists and turns that make us realize that his life is not as simple as we dream to have.

The climax will have plenty of surprises ( shock for Gopal character ) as he finds everyone around him to be from Malaysian police dept , whose sole agenda seem to capture the real culprit behind the death of Sowcar .

The opening scene shows a woman being chased by a man in a car and falling to her death after being hit by a train. What comes immediately is a passenger ship from Singapore on whichSivaji comes across Saroja Devi and her Father VKR ( supposedly ) . The few initial exchanges develops into a circle which makes them meet again in Ooty race course and as per invitation from Shivaji , both stay with him in his bungalow.

The first tense moment comes when NT feels extremely uncomfortable ( terrific expression here ) whenver he comes across a train . A sharp Sarojadevi questions him when he does it again and this makes NT open out his bitter / sad past – about his first married life with Sowcar 1.

The Director quickly summarises those scenes between NT and night club singer Sowcar and why and how she died. NT justifies convincingly to Sarojadevi , that Sowcar had committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. NT also gains sympathy from SD and their slightly disturbed love gets renewed. But hell breaks loose when Sowcar II appears suddenly when the engagement was about to happen . This puts a total break to his happiness.
From here, its all frustration and agony for NT as he tries to break the Sowcar / MRR undue influence.

Though the movie begins a bit casually / slowly but soon settles down very well focusing on the emerging love between Sivaji and Saroja Devi ( a new lease of life ) .

The first sign of something fishy starts with phone call from M.R.Radha and by now the audience realize that all is not well.

The pace picks up though with NT’s admission about his past life. The episode has enough intrigue to pique our interest and Sivaji's performance makes it believable. While his instant rapport with Sowcar is a little unbelievable, it does help the narrative move quickly. Sowcar's drunken behavior after the wedding makes us feel sorry for NT.

The reappearance of Sowcar Janaki is a nice twist and the movie becomes really absorbing from that point. We feel sorry for Sivaji's plight as he struggles to make the people around him believe his position. His happiness at each new oppurtunity to unmask Sowcar and disappointment when he sees the idea crumble are believable.

NT will be too good, that too in the second half as he tries to find a way out of the sticky situation. Saroja Devi excels during serious scenes. The biggest surprise among the lot was a different portrayal by Sowcar who has never before or after played such a character

Many small small characters like OAK Devar ( NT’s inspector friend who tries his best to help ), Ramdoss ( Sowcar’s brother who actually suspects the manner she was reported as dead and initiates the whole process ).

One character who really really frustrates NT was that M.R.Radha character who appears in a Thai style lungi and rubs him quite frequently. Sowcar 2 and MRR provide enough nightmares to NT at regular intervals.

MSV-TKR provide top class stuff both in the form of scintillating songs and tremendous BGM.

Wonderful synopsis Balaji...

I recenlty picked the DVD of this movie... I am sure that if this movie had been made an entry into the Oscars, it would have bagged many if not all !!!!

It is extremly difficult to find a flaw in this movie - be it in the story line, the picturisation, acting, sets, costumes, lyrics, dialogues - the list is endless.. and ofcourse the Music.. I would like to reiterate that the music was the "pakka balam" for the movie and all the songs are amazing works of art to say the least...

The variation in orchestration and presentation of the 2 versions of the "paarththa gnayaabagam illayo" song is something that only the MMs were capable of... The fact that this movie and everyone associated with it have touched himalayan heights in their areas, bears testimony to that fact!!!

Cheers

Dear Balaji,
Good analysis.

Hi Andy,

Not only the songs, but the entire back-ground music of the movie (right from the title music) was a great plus point for the film. I am sure, the film would have won "Oscar" at least for the Music. You will remember, the film has two totally different versions of "Unnai Onru Ketpen" too (may be, the only film where two songs are composed in two different versions).

I am eagerly looking forward to the inclusion of Pudhiya Paravai's Title Music in the BGM section soon.

Bye,
Venu Soundar

Dear Venu

When I said "music was the pakka balam" I meant the entire music (inclusive of the background score et all : ) )
