Another great composer of the 50s and 60s who is also the GURU of Mellisai Mannar .

Has composed for many movies in more than 4 languages .

Who can forget his famous Manippu ( Vennilaa vaanil varum velayil / nee enge )
Kappal otiya thamizan - Katru veliyidai kannamaa is just one gem out the treasure hunt
Nadodi Mannan - Kannil vandhu minnal pol kaanudhe

Well. Lots to be discussed and exchanged about this great composer of yesteryears.

Request all seniors to participate actively and pour in more information about this man.

To start with , what priceless contribution he had made to tamil cinema music - MSV :

When Jupiter Pictures took on lease Central Studios in Coimbatore, Viswanathan made his way to find employment as office boy. His interest in music made him the all-purpose assistant of the Jupiter in-house music composer S. M. Subbaiah Naidu. Mesmerised by the harmonium, which would soon become an extension of himself, he would compose songs whenever Naidu was away. And then came a turning point. Jupiter Pictures was then producing "Abhimanyu" (1948) featuring M. G. Ramachandran, U. R. Jeevaratnam and S. M. Kumaresan in lead roles. Subbaiah Naidu had composed as many as nine tunes for the song , "Puthu Vasanthamaamey Vazhviley...." but the producers and the director rejected all! Viswanathan was composing a tune for the song and Naidu happened to hear that. And he was impressed. The tune was submitted and approved but none new the real identity of the composer! The tune became a hit. Then Jupiter Pictures shifted to Madras and there was the inevitable retrenchment of the locals on the staff. Thanks to Naidu, MSV was taken along but not before the reason was revealed. Jupiter Somasundaram who felt delighted in spotting new talent.

SMS's role in grooming MSV is immense .

Requesting our Admininstrators to get info of Mr. SMS through MSV who is his Guru & guardian

Dear Balaji anna...

'KappalOttiya Thamizhan" music done by G.Ramanathan and not by SMS.

I have mentioned this movie in GR thread.

Music Director Thiru S.M.Subbaiyah Naidu was a giant in 1950s, when G.Ramanathan was another giant. R.Sudharsanam was also famous at that time (who can forget the golden songs of Parasakthi by Sudharsanam..?)

M.S.Viswanathan, T.K.Ramamoorthy , K.V.Mahadevan were the growing generation at that time, who were getting ready to replace these giants.

The two unforgettable movies of S.M.Subbaiah Naidu are ‘NadOdi Mannan’ and ‘Konjum Salangai’.

In 1960s SMS done music for the movies produced by Balan Pictures mostly acted by Jaishanker and Ravichandran.. Some of them are:

Sabash Thambi
Raja Veettu PiLlai
Panakkara PiLLai
Mannippu
Badhilukku Badhil…….etc….etc….

He done music for MGR starred movie “Aasai Mugam” with four songs, even the movie was a flop one but all the four songs were spoken in public. They are:

“eththanai periya manithanukku eththanai siriya manamirukku”

“nALoru mEdai pozhuthoru nadippu”

“ennai kAthaliththAl mattum pOdhumA” (duet)

“neeyA illai nAnA.. nenjakkadhavai konjam thirandhathu” (duet)

He also done music for MGR starred “Thalaivan” but songs were not hit, comparing to other MGR movies.

SMS is an ever memorable composer.

Oh thanks Saradhaji for the correction. True. KOT was by GR only.

SMS reached peak for KONJUM SALANGAI .

The evergreen Singara velane deva ! which announced S.Janaki to the musical world ! even today SJ is more popular for this song Smile

Janaki became sensational with her first experimental song (light classical), "Singaravelane Deva…" in 1958, under the music direction of Late S. M. Subbaiah Naidu, for the Tamil film Konjum Salangai. In the song, her voice competes with the Nadaswaram played by Late Karaikuruchi Arunachalam. The music director tested so many others’ voices to suit the notes played on Nadaswaram, as demanded by the scene, and finally chose Janaki. This song was appreciated and applauded by one and all in the South and also in the North and brought her laurels

Dear MSV Rasikas,

When Raja Veetu Pillai (Music by SMS), it was written in a review if MSV would have been the MD the songs would have been more powerful. When SMS was meeting the concerned editor, SMS has taken the review in a positive manner and informed that you are right, I am proud because of MSV is popularity (Magan thangaikku Atrum Udhavi), this was informed by Great Editor 'CHO' in his Tuklak

SMS’s ENARUGE NEE IRUNDHAAL is one terrific song for which one has to search for adjectives . Also, it gives me a thought that the ludes arrangement , the tune set all are the style of MSV ! May be MSV would have got highly influenced by his Guru SMS .

Truly a wonderful song from Thirudadhey

Another splendid movie for SMS is MANIPPU.

Song like VENILLA VAANIL VARUM VELAYIL NAAN VIZITHIRUNDHEN is superb tune & lovely orchestration . The song has 3 interludes & each one has different lude arrangement .

The best is NEE ENGE . This song is a classic example of what SMS is all about !

It was set to 3 different tunes :

1. The first one was sung by P.Susheela for Vennira Aadai Nirmala
2. The second , by TMS in a very high pitch tone for Jaishankar
3. The third is a background song for the soul of Nirmala & that’s really intimidating

The movie also has nice rerecording .

Dear Mr, Balaji,
Thank you for your write-up on KONJUM SALANGAI and the number Singaravelanae deva by SJ and Karukurichi Arunachalam on Nagaswaram. Undoubtedly, KA was the biggest exponent of this instrument then. But, our friends have missed out the most important feature- a domain that lingers in me as a vivid case of men behind machines. THIS PARTICULAR SONG BY SMS NAIDU SHOULD BE A WORLD RECORD FOR ITS SUPERIOR RECORDING. Due to unavoidable reasons, SJ and KA could not come together for a recording. SMS first made KA play his instrument and recorded the entire sequence. Subsequently SJ sang her part in matching notes. THE BIGGEST POINT ABOUT THE WHOLE EXERCISE WAS MERGER OF THE TWO PIECES TO FORMULATE THE 2 SIDED EDITION [in those days songs were recorded on gramaphone records for consumers and called 1 side / 2 side songs].
The merger was absolutely magnificient without the facility of track recording. Hats off to the MD and the recordists. Had it happened now , grand children of the MD would say only my grandpa started the concept of recording. Poor SMS did not even murmur of it nor the media then.
Subesquently in Bombay Shanmugananda hall SJ met KA and introduced herslf to KA --"Sir I am Janaki" . KA -- "Which Janaki?" Then she recalled Singaravelanae and KA politely acknowledged "I did not know you, as we have not met earlier". This incident is a grand revelation of how great people are really great.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai

Another great song by SMS is from the movie "Malaikallan" Ethanai kaalamdhan ematruvar intha naatile...
Chinnapayale chinnapayale from Arasilangumari
Thoongathe thambi thoongathe... from Nadodi Mannan

I am not sure about "Thirudathe paapa thirudathe..."
Is the movie Thirudathe scored by SMS or MSVR?

He has scored lot of MGR movies...

I think he spent his last days with MM only.

Yes, THIRUDATHEY was by SMS, yet "En arugey nee Irundhal.." was composed by our Master !!! SMS could have concealed our Master's name initially (of course, he opened this secret during one of his public appearances) yet keen listeners could easily figure out the mellifluous eternal melody of our Master in this song, especially the tune of the charanam "VANJI IDAI KENJUVADEN , PINJU MOZHI KONJUVADEN...." is our Master's trademark !!!!

MSV Rules !!!
Venkat.

Oru 10% doubt irunthathu. Now it is cleared.

The songs I mentioned were by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram. He was a great Lyricist.

Hi Venkat,

Just saw your interesting posting. But I think "Chinnappayale, Chinnappayale" of TMS for "Arasilankumari" is by the great GR and not by another legend SMS.

Naidu has given splendid music for Thirumanam (My personal favourites of TMS - Ennamellam Ore Idathaye, Bharathiyar song "Mangiyathor Nilavinile" and Inbam Yaavume thunbam aaguthe), Maragatham (Kannukkulle Ennai Paaru - superb duet by TMS and Radha-Jayalakshmi).

Another great yesteryear composer was SV Venkatraman who set to tunes many splendid solos (non-film) of MS Subbulakshmi, like "Kandathundo Kannan Pol" (Lyrics Kalki), "Malai Pozhidinile" (Kalki) etc.

Who can foget his "Meera"? And if I'm not mistaken he was the MD for "Manohara", "Kangal", "Maruda Naattu Veeran" (Paruvam Paarthu Argil Vandum Vetkama) , "Arivali", "Irumbu Thirai" (remember the great TMS-P Leela duet Nenjil Kudiyirukkum" picturised on Sivaji and Vyjayantimala). He died a few years back and hardly any one took notice of his death.
