Dear Friends,
It is really a 'nedu naal aasai' to remember and replay the beauty of a composition by our MM. Probably, the movie is Saranaalayam, and the song sung by SPB and PS. It came in the early eighties, the songs like a whiff of fresh breeze, amidst the start of a season of hot summer dry air blowing across Tamil movies!
The song is dominated by a different style of MM playing the violins, in quite a high pitch. They absolutely captivate your imagination, as though echoing in a deep valley or gorge, giving us a feeling of depth. The intricacies of mandolin and guitar, entwining the interludes, is brilliantly supported by Prasad. In fact, MM briefly allows Prasad, only during the interludes, to cut loose, and holds him back with the dholak during the rest. In those few moments, Prasad is in full flow, and MM wants us to yearn for more of it!
If that was the drama with the percussion and strings, SPB takes over the rest!! This time it is not a so very youthful SPB, but a bit matured, yet sweeter and melodious! The lines where he is made to repeat at the ending of each stanza, he is virtually the alter ego of our master! You can hear MM in his voice! He is in his elements, caressing the song with his silky touches as he ends, each time!
The swaras in between are like a garland, flowing like a river, so apt to the mood, literally interwoven by crisp tabla beats.
Another wonderful creation from the master! Words become insufficient to describe these creations!
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan |
