https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmPGXja2x6w&feature=youtu.be

Why only 'vatsans'? It holds a lot for all of us.

'Aadai mAtrum kalai' sounds a reference to poor table manners of the rural girl in an urban restaurant [ Kudos to KD] Also "Ennanga" is a total naive address by any rural folk irrespective of gender. [KD's live mind]

As regards the swara pattern laid through chords and your observation that it is a new line taken by MSV from 1965;as we all know that 1965 was turning point in MSV's career, where after he was all by himself and had absolute freedom with no obligation see if TKR has something to say and things like that.May be it could have happened like that also. Irrespective of TKR or any one, once in 5 years or so, MSV has himself infused new compositional patterns -including in tunes, ludes, interludes, orchestration and every other domain of composition but without destroying lyrical beauty and verbal clarity. Enga mAmA of 1967 was perhaps in the cut off zone prior to Sivandha muN, nam nAdu and other such movies where orchestration reached a new plane altogether. All our efforts to decipher MSV would lead to endless pursuit of treasure hunt without fatiguing us. Such is his peerless repertoire!
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai.

Hi Murali & Ram,

Though it was beyond my technical capability to decipher and understand the contents of your writing, one thing that I understood is the rhytmic patterns and the changes that he effects in every song with effortless ease. And these changes will find their places so perfectly in his tunes that the beauty of the tune is enhanced to it's ultimate listening pleasure!!!

During the rehearsal of Vaarthaigal Sollum Vaathiangal, Thumbha Shekar was playing a particular rhythm (regret unable to recollect which song) for a song. MSV who wasn't too impressed with the rhythm played, walked right upto Shekar and as he gave way, MSV himself played the Thumbha and played the rhythm he was looking for!!!! I was so surprised and bewildered by this sudden turn of events, I screamed in absolute ecstacy not even knowing where I was. My younger son who was learning keyboard (unfortunately he has stopped now due to school routines, a person who will listen to all the RR & titles I used to play for him in the car and once we reach home, he will play those on the keyboard, such a gifted player indeed Sad ) at that time yelled at MSV like this.... "thatha neenga thaan rhythm king"...Mind you for these words to come from a child who was 10 years old then, needs no further explanation I guess. MSV who was so thrilled at his reaction came upto him like a child and extended a very warm hand shake with a large grin written all over his face!!! Moments etched in platinum in our hearts!!!

Not only MSV's rhythms are so unique in itself that they are worth a research but even the defeaning "silence" in the most appropriate places of many songs would derive a huge meaning from the unassuming listener!!! The scale changes & rhythm patterns are something the world must take notice of as it is only through HIS music that we get to listen & learn from...

Wasn't I justified when I crowned him as "RHYTHM EMPEROR"??? BTW, who in the world needs a recognition from the Government???. MSV has captured enough of hearts where HE is adorned as a permanent Deity!!!

CHEERS
MSV
IS MUSIC!!!

Hai Ram, Thanks for your technical details about the Rhythm pattern in this song. In fact I have long wondered about this aspect of MSV which has been exposed and explained in this forum. The reason is the lack of knowledge especially myself.

May be the forum members who are well versed in this aspect should start writing in a way that it can be understandable by all of

To me there seems to be some similarity in the rhythmic pattern of this song and 'Irandil ondru' (Raja) and 'enna poruththa' (rakasiya police 115). I give below the links for these two songs.

http://youtu.be/cqjbdAA5zNU

http://youtu.be/KJobbwySqRI

I am not sure whether my perception is right. Perhaps it is just the fast pace. If there is some resemblance, it may be discussed. Otherwise, you can just ignore my observation.

NYM, will respond to you a littler later but now onto something I can decipher immediately without deliberation. Ram, thisram of a higher tempo....agreed, to be precise 4 cycles of this 1-2-3 pattern are played for every word. Now the 4/4 beat awarded to the charanams can be applied to the pallavi also as opposed to thisram if you start the beat at "ga" within the word "ennanga". But MSV has preferred to wait until the fag end of the word "ennanga" and has ended up setting it to a bouncy thisram as that is need of the hour, a foot tapper of a song. There is another thisram nAn thannan thanikkAttu rAjA" in same movie. Now here, a swing beat could have been awarded to the pallavi (as in "nAn nanri solvEn" and several more) but MSV has preferred to express the "thisram" nature of the tempo, coursing through each beat with a brush in a cyclic fashion, something he did with the bongos in the interludes of "Ayirathhil oruthhiammA nee".

I am just getting bowled over the way this song 'ennanga' had another dimension with respect to the rhythm pattern.

But Ram/Vatsan, tell me. What rhythm is for the Folk music. I think Chadusram. Right?

Where is our Tabla player ?. Where is our Gadam Player ? They should get in to this discussion.

Ram/Vatsan,

I just find out another aspect. Just hear the beginning of the interlude of the first charanam. It starts with a flute. That rhythm seems to be thisram.

But hear the beginning of the interlude of the second charanam which starts with the string and Guitar. That seems to be chadusram.

Am I right here.

Yes, NYM you are right about the "gathi" in the first and the second interludes. The first interlude therefore seems to continue extending the aura created by the pallavi, whereas the second interlude set to chathusram by choice through a conspicuous change in "gathi" i.e. movement from thisram to chathusram, arrests the listeners attention and brings in a change in flavour, much like a scale change within a song used to create a dramatic effect. The dramatic effect is augmented by choice of those chords played with palpable volume (kudos to the mixing aspect) on the rhythm guitar and the electric guitar and combo organ....all in the second interlude.

With respect to folk, folk music can be in any "gathi" based on what sentiment is to be conveyed. It is the raaga usage within TamilNadu folk which is interesting....Chenchuruti, Anandha Bhairvai, punnagavarali, Nadanamakriya etc..........

Today's "koothu" songs are all set to Thisram without fail. MSV's great koothu/folk songs "theru pArkka vanthirukkum", " othhaiyadi pAthayilE", and "ennadi raakkamma" are too set to Thisram. With his "slow" and sentimental folk songs "thAzhaiyAm poomudichhu" and "kaNNAna poomaganE" ....both of them could portray the impression of being exceedingly slowly paced owing to the sentimental tangent and ofcourse the beat "strikes" falling between inordinate intervals, but they are set to thisram of a normal or high tempo. There used to be a beat in the thisram gathi termed as "KVM beat".....songs like "mappiLLa vanthAn", "chittukuruvi chittukuruvi" etc are set to that beat which was later used by IR in songs like "uchhi vaguntheduthhu". MSV has scored folks songs in chathusram too "ArOdum maNNil", "vaLLi mAlai mAngutti" etc.
More later....

Ram/Vatsan,

I was referring to the folk music that comes in the interlude of this song and not as folk music in general. I should have been more clearer.

Thanks.

Vaithy, the song is "manithan enbavan deivamAgalAm" which actually does not have a Thumba component at all. That was the quintessential MSV trying his utmost to spoil the rehearsal sessions by introducing non-existent features Smile I remember his firing Thumba Sekhar and quickly slipping into his seat and playing out the rhythm himself.

This pick of MYM somehow reminds me of Ek mein Ek Aur Tu - RDB- Khel khel mein

The Rhythm especially .

RDB used to listen to Tamil songs too and KKM was a 1975 release.

Could be possible that RDB got inspired ?

Am I the only odd guy out in this query ? Rolling Eyes

Hi Ram & Forum members,

The forum is on inferno and it's high time someone extigusihes the fire and not the zeal to reply!!!

Your observations on the composing compulsions of MSV has thrown open many topics for discussion. Amongst all the musicians born in India, if there is one person who is purely driven by more of sponteinity than anything else, then it is only MSV and no one else. How many of us have experienced his capacity to compose at the drop of a hat!!! There are composers who take days, weeks or even months or till the last rupee of the producer drains out to roll out a mediocre tune. MSV's music has always been for the inner soul and not fo anything else.

Our interactions with MSV's very senior orchestra members also confirmed this beyond any doubt. As you have opined, MSV can never be restricted to musical grammar or scales or raagas or any rules. MSV loves to flout and violate all these practices blatantly (with no intentions to demean ofcourse) but ultimately creates something that leaves an indelible mark in our hearts. If this is not called creativity at it's best, then what else would qualify??? It is not the number of products that you roll out, it is the quality and the durability that matters. MSV's creations have virtually stood the test of times and hence have become timeless.....

Let's enjoy them in every way we could and also propagate it in which ever way we could.

Ram, I wrote 4 articles in the initial period when I enrolled myself in the site.

Giving below the link

You have to take in to account the following points in mind. When I wrote this article my knowledge about chords were very limited and as such some of the chords name could have been written wrongly. But I mentioned the respective swarams from which you can take the cue.

In fact there are three people in our circle who believes in this aspect.

One is myself, the other is Ashok Iyer and the third is Dr. Arumainayagam Chakrvarthy. Of course all three of us play Key Board/Harmonium and all of us are interested in MSV's composition.

Now I shall answer in detail to your other post.
