To summarise the above :
Arohanam of Arabhi and Sama and Devagandhari – S R2 M1 P D2 S

Avarohanam : Arabhi- S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S
: Sama – S D2 P M1 G3 R2 S
: Devagandhari – S N3 D2 N2 D P M1 G3 R2 S R2 G3 SR2 S

Our Mellisai Mannargal too have used Arabhi during 1959.

It will be pertinent to go back to the musical scenario prevailed at the end of the decade to understand what was the need of the hour...... While the Paa series just took off with Padhi bhakti / Baghappirivinai , it appears, the duo were still not 100% sure of introducing the western touch to tamil films....so, as a continuance of the existing trend, they had given a dose of classical......however, En vaazvil pudhu paadhai kanden is somewhat an indication of things to come

Fine. So when did the duo use Arabhi during this movie ?

Each and every sentence has been tuned with subtle variances , with heavy gamakams , oscillation from a lower pitch to the higher notes like a swing !

A plain singing of the pallavi itself will tell you point blank that its Arabhi.....

S D S R S P D S N D P

In 20 seconds flat, the Pallavi touches all the Arabhi swaras and swiftly bounces back to base note ...

TMS responds to Jikki’s teaser with his ever majestic voice but this time in a romantic mode ....so he expresses his desire by starting with R2 but suddenly rushes to the higher S ...as if to cajole his lady love, he deftly lowers the scale to the base S ! TMS repeats his part again with more seriousness this time ( Mangayar kulmaniye .....)

The Sitar and Flute interludes are fast and crisp....they also didn’t want to waste time for the duo !

And even while Jikki tries to express her happiness , TMS swiftly responds with his counter

The lyrics are beautifully penned by Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram.... who has nicely presented the situation ( valluvar vaziyiniley ini vaazkai ratham sellume )...the couple after all, are making a come back after a brief separation and the lyricist in a poetic manner puts forward his imagination....

I love the lyrics :
kaNNilae ooRum neerum ini
nam nilai kANa nANum
sugam kavidhai pAdi varum

The poet aptly sums up the situation here .....

The second charanam is all TMS dominating as his wont, resuming at higher octaves followed by some mesmerizing humming challenging each other ....

What baffles me is the fact that while Erikarayin mele is being worshipped , wonder why there is no mention about this great composition which has all the qualities of Arabhi ....

Again , why did the duo chose Arabhi !! A query I wish to ask MSV ... To my knowledge, I haven’t heard MSV applying Arabhi ever after this .............May be, for the Telugu lyrics portion of Sindhu nadhiyin misai nilaviniley, there is a touch of Arabhi I think.... also in Karnan ...during.....malargal sootti manjal pootti ( when Devika gets into family way )

Let us also glance at the movies which the duo had composed before and immediately after :

1959-Amudhavalli , Bagapirivinai, Raja Malayasimhan Thalai koduthan thambi
1960-Thangapadhumai, Aalukoru veedu, Kavalai illadha manidhan , Mannadhi mannan, Ondru pataal undu vaazvu, Rathnapurai Ilavarasi
1961-Bagyalakshmi, Manapandhal, Paalum pazzamum, Pavamannippu, Pasamalar

Hearing the song even today gives a refreshing feeling , very much in line with lyrics PONGUM PUDHU VELLAME

Dear Sir,
Wonderful analysis and in depth details of the raagam as well as the importance. We get a feeling of completely drenched in the aarabhi magic after reading your treatise.
The song, also known for its briskness, has Jikki as the singer who was not much used by our master. She was known for her high-pitched voice and dynamic turnings. Of course, some magical songs have been given to her. I believe she returned in the movie where MSV-IR combo singing a lullaby of sorts. Do not know if it was MM's choice...
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan

Good write-up Balaji !!!! As it is with film music, alien notes are incorporated for aesthetic uplift and therefore this is Arabhi-in-spirit, meaning the Arabhi characteristic dominates despite those extraneous influences. Since Balaji has already dealt with the raaga aspect of the number, it may be interesting to take note of the notes that are Arabhi unfriendly but yet song friendly, meaning they add great value to the song itself. The curvy sustain rendered by Jikki that connects the line to the succeeding line starting with "kAlam enum panthalil" zips through the Kalyani "Ma" giving a flash of Hameer Kalyani for that brief fraction of a second only for it to be quickly buried as the core Arabhi theme of the song blows those encroaching alien entities away like dried leaves. So fidelity it is towards Arabhi despite another tuneful "transgression" of touching Ga3 in the aaroh at judiciously chosen points in the song. With respect to Karnan again, the compelling Shehnai suggests intended Sudha Saveri, but the melody piece contains all notes of Shankarabharanam but with the Aarabhi or Sudha Saveri inducing notes projected at the expense of other notes. The Karnan melody actually is the piece that creates the sense of Deja vu when one listens to "vizhiyE vizhiyE unakkenna vElai", yet another Arabhi showcased with other selfless notes adding value on the sly and remaining raaga-unobtrusive !!! "thenrali Adum koonthalai kaNden" springs to mind and so does "manthAra malarE" and its first charanam and certainly these fall under the Arabhi-in-spirit umbrella. MSV more often than not prefers to paint any allusions or references to his home state with Arabhi. I do remember listening to some BGM pieces and Lalitha gaanam in Malayalam sung by Madhu Balakrishnan set to Arabhi plus some sundry swarams. "inru namathuLLamE" is certainly inspired by "Brindavanamum......" as suggested by the undulating flute pieces. I do remember listening to a G Ramanathan number sung by TMS and P Susheela in "President Panjaksharam" which was another inspired derivative of the Missiamma number.
