Dear all:
Its time to re-introduce me again. I wrote sometime back on MSV's wonderful use of the Waltz, the Bongo, the Whistle and of course his favorite singer PBS. Its been a while since I wrote in MSV TIMES but I have continued to be an ardent follower of the web site.
Besides being a mesmerized fan of MSV I wanted to take this opportunity of how he converted a layman into a musician. By listening to his songs and playing them repeatedly, I self-taught playing his compositions in the keyboards and the harmonica. Of course it's not been easy, it has taken almost 15+ years to come to some level of understanding of his musical genius. I don't know scales, chords, ragas and I also don't know to read sheet music to comprehend notes - yet I can play most of his tunes by listening. Here are two examples of what the MAESTRO can do to a layman.
One: Using MIDI (Musical Instruments Digital Interface) software, I have played note by note, track by track and recorded them, sequenced them and orchestrated them, to finally get the full score close to the original. This is not easy for a naive untrained learner, but my passion kept me alive. Here is a sample of one of my favorites - "Enna Enna Vaarthaigalo" from Vennira Aadai. I have played it on a new device called the IRIG where the entire recording has been performed connecting it to my IPAD using Music Studio software and Drum pads (for the drums). Condone all errors in playing to an enthusiastic MSV learner.

TWO: I used to play the Harmonica in my teens, gave it up as I really couldn't afford a good one , the cheap ones giving me blisters in my lips. Recently I picked up a harmonica in the US when I visited to see my daughter graduate and for the last 5 months or so have been practicing. Here is a sample of my playing a favourite number of MSV from the film Shanthi - "Nenjathile nee netru vanthai" on the harmonica.

MSV is not just a genius - he has transcended that level when his music has the ability to convert a novice like me to a musician. He has given me hopes, dreams, and helped me in my bouts of despair and is an integral part of my life.
(I hope some of you who read this will watch the links and give me feedback - it will help me improve on my ability to understand my MAESTRO better. )
with warmest regards
Ram |

Hi Ramki,
It was a real musical pleasure to watch you playing two of the greatest melodies created by the "Musical Vaamana" - Shri. Shri. MSV!!!
Look at what HIS music can do to a rasika.....1. make a person to be an addict for the rest of his life for HIS music & bring out the hidden talent in a person like you. I am sure both these situations are treasurable moments in one's life....Thanks for the uploads....
CHEERS
MSV IS MUSIC!!!

Dear Mr. Ram N Ramakrishnan,
Somehow I missed your thread. In fact after reading your post I just could not believe that same thing can happen for different people. I also being a layman and interested in MSV's music took up Harmonium some time in the 80s and with out any knowledge of music self taught. It took many years to understand his intricate notes flow but after many years I feel I could now play many of his songs after hearing just once.
I had shifted to the key board in 2005 and I have Yamaha PSR I 425. I also tried to record his songs by doing different layers and tried to get through a MIDI file but due to my poor lack of knowledge in the software, I gave it up.
I am now just using the available styles in my key board with chords accompaniment and playing for my self satisfaction
Just giving you a link which I played and uploaded in You tube

When I saw your post I could recollect the moments I tried and gave up. But you seem to have persevered and it shows in the result. The song 'Enna enna varthaigalo' played by you is awesome to listen.
Since you are Chennai, we should meet up if you are interested. May be I could learn something from you. My cell no is 98409 08843.
Thanks. |

Dear Ram
Very nice to see your comeback and that too with bang, giving us your 'ekalaiva' musical presentations, so wonderfully !
Your perseverence to recreate (can I say so ?) two of the greatest numbers of the Genius, after many listenings, attempts, with ever-increasing-enthu, is something I would salute !
How are you ? Are you in town ? Still remeber the meetings we had during our morning walks in R A Puram, years back !
Pls do find time to post in the site, which will make the new generation across the globe make 'understand' the Legend's Musical Gems, aspire and perform a 'real' music !!
