1. Recently I happened to flip through an old issue of கல்கி magazine, where I came across a very interesting question and answer. Reproducing the same below:

Excellent answer.

2. In one of the recent episodes of 'Super Singer' where SPB was the special guest, SPB said it was very difficult to follow MSV's singing and reproduce them as it is, when he used to teach the singers while composing. He added that had MSV taken to singing seriously, he would perhaps have been the "Best Gazzal Singer" in the world.

Regards,
Venu Soundar

I think to be fair, ARR's semmozi song can be compared with only MSV's Sange muzangu. The inspirational and emotional nature of Sange Muzangu is missing in Semmoziyaana thamizh Mozhiyaam.

Dear Mr Rangaswamy,

How can you compare ARR’s Semmozhi song with MSV’s Sangey Muzhangu? Semmozhi song cannot come anywhere near to Sangey Muzhangu, Sangey Muzhangu is at the top of the hill and Semmozhi couldn’t even reach the bottom of the hill.

The answer in Kalki aptly says that the Semmozhi song is wildly running away from the Tamil land. I wonder how a Music Director, majority of whose compositions are nothing but a “nasal shouting” (தமிழில் சொல்ல வேண்டுமானால் மூக்கால் முனகுவது அல்லது கத்துவது), is being called as an “Oscar Man”???? MSV in those days recorded his songs on a single track and still the lyrics were audible crystal clear. Now, despite so many tracks being available besides technological advancements, we are still unable to understand the wordings of the lyrics.

Dear Mr. Venu,

Neeraadum kadaluduththa and Semmozhi songs are on two different planes. Neeraadum kadaluduththa is like a prayer song whereas Semmozhi song proclaims the greatness of Tamil. That way it can be compared only to Sange muzhangu and not to Neeraadum kadaluduththa. That was my point. The person who asked the question had asked for comparison between Neeraadum and Semmozhi because both were theme songs of Tamil conferences.

Your letter sounds as if I had given equal weights to Semmoozhiyaana Thamizhmozhiyaam and Sange muzhangu. I had clearly said that inspirational and emotional content of Sange muzhangu is missing from Semmozhi song. Without even comparing, how do you say one falls far below the other? If Sange muzhangu and Semmozhi can't be compared, then how can Semmozhi and Neeraadum kadaluduththa can be compared?

thanks to my FB friend Mr tenali rajan .i donot know where to post so i am posting it under TITBITS.

During the MSV programme at the (Raja Annamalai Manram) held on the 25th of this month, Shri Lakshmanan Chettiar mentioned that "MSV ராமமூர்த்தியுடன் இணைந்து கடைசியாக இசையமைத்த படம் ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன். Then, pointing his fingers at MSV, Shri Chettiar said "ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் நீ" to the thunderous applause of the packed auditorium.

MSV, as usual, was conducting the programme with great energy and enthusiasm. They had to literally plead to make Him sit and handle the harmonium. After the first song after the interval, MSV sang in His கணீர் குரல், a பாரதியார் song superbly composed by Him exclusively for this programme. Subsequent to this, Shri Chettiar requested MSV to please leave, go home and take rest, considering His age and health condition. MSV very reluctantly left the auditorium to a big ovation from the audience.

My Song Is For You, My Love Is For You
I Will Sing For You

Dear Friends,

One can add to the list,

'nAn unnaichErndha selvam, nee ennai AaLum deivam' "kalaikoil"

'nAn nandri solven en kaNgaLukku, unnai ennarugE koNdu vandhadharkku' "kUZHANDHAIYUM DEIVAMUM'

'Nanandri yAr varuvAr [ movie name eludes memory]

There are any number of songs that suggest lyricist -MD combination in expressions explicit or otherwise,

as for instance

'yenakkoru kAdhali irukkindrAL avaL Ezhu swarangaLil sirikkindrAL' and

the lyric frame
'koduththa sandhangaLil en manadhai nee ariya nAn uraiththAEn' of "varumaiyin niram sivappu"

As a corollary, we should recognize that songs where words 'nAn' or 'nee' appear as the opening word on pallavi, MSV has unfailingly delivered a powerful tune by precisely treating that word to bring out the exact emotions desirable for the situation.

As evidence , look at the effective tune for 'nAn' in "nAn nandrisolven" and for the same 'nAn' in
"nAn unnaicherndha selvam"; how MSV infuses a stretch or squeeze aptly to carry the intended impact is a gift exclusive to him.
That speaks volumes on his immaculate perception of the lyric , at times more than what the lyricist ever imagined; well, that is MSV in crux.

Thanks for the opportunity

Warm regards K.Raman Madurai

Since professor has mentioned naan unnaich cherntha selvam, one of the songs that can be considered the definoition of melody, I would like to share one thing I observed in the song. First the male voice sings

When the same lines care repeated by the female voice, we can observe an emphasis on the word தெய்வம். The woman is embarrassed by the man describing her as the God ruling his life and corrects him by saying that he is the one who is the God ruling her life. So, there's a special emphasis on the word தெய்வம் when the woman sings the same lines.

Who else but MM can understand such subtleties and give expression to them in the sangathis and modulations?

When we talk about the word நான், I am amazed at the number of songs that MSV has composed with நான் as the first word and the different styles in which He has used it. Here is the list of songs composed by our Master starting with நான்:

The list will be much longer if we take into account songs that do not begin with நான் but appears within the song like நினைத்ததை நடத்தியே முடிப்பவன் நான் நான் நான், உன்னை நான் சந்தித்தேன், எல்லோரும் நலம் வாழ நான் பாடுவேன், etc.

Reproducing below a portion of music director Vidyasagar's interview that appeared in 'The Hindu' (Tamil edition):

Like Vidyasagar, MSV is the "Guru" to many. In one of his interviews that appeared in the popular film magazine "Bommai" in late 1970s (I don't remember the exact year), Ilayaraja said he developed his music skills just by watching movies which had MSV's music. He had mentioned that he used to see such movies on the very first day.

Dear Mr SRS and friends,
Besides whatever has been posted on the topic, I recall what ARR said on the occasion, MSV's compositions are "organic, human effort and this kind of work I have not seen from anyone else".
The winding phrase of the statement says it all as a corroborative reference [unintended though] to what Singer Srinivas recently said "he composes in real time and musically he [MSV] is in a different planet.

Both the statements have emerged from the persons more as a natural observation, that could not any more be held back even if it may cause a ripple or two elsewhere.

I am reminded of the saying "Quality can never be contained or hidden".

Thanks for the opportunity
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai
