In this section I would like to present some rare and unforgettable gems composed by our Master, which are hardly broadcast on Radio stations or telecast on TV channels.
Listening to any song composed by the great MSV is always a “சுகம்“. Here are some “சுகமான“ compositions of the Legend for your listening pleasure:
Song: Sugam, Sugam, Idhu Thunbamana Inbamanadhu
Film: Thangai
Singer: P Suseela
What a beautiful composition blending Piano and Violins superbly?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sornc78AA5Q
Song: Nadappadhu Sugam Ena Nadathu
Film: Moonru Deivangal
Singers: TMS, SPB & Saibaba
A wonderful song, never to be heard on Radio or seen on TV. What a classic usage of Flute, Accordian, Sax & Trumpet. But, surprisingly there is no Violin usage in this song, one of the rare things in MSV songs.

Song: Sugamaana Raagangaley
Film: Mirudhanga Chakravarthy
Singer: Vani Jayaram
A superb classical composition of the legend, using a Raagamalika and wonderfully sung by Vani Jayaram. It is amazing to see the champion of actors playing on the Mridangam like a true professional.

Song: Sugamana Sinthanayil Idhamana Uravodu Sorgangal Varuginrana
Film: Taxi Driver
Singers: SPB & S Janaki
Another classic but hardly heard/seen number.

Song: Sugam Ethiley Idhayathilaa
Film: Parakkum Paavai
Singers: TMS, LRE & KJY
What a lovely composition? MSV has used Yesudass’ voice for Chandrababu in this song.

Thanks for the opportunity,

To continue with the rare gems of MSV, here are two more most melodeous numbers.
When it comes to songs starting with "Pon", the ones that immediately comes to our mind are "Pon Onru Kanden", "Pon Enben" and "Pon Magal Vanthaal". The below two numbers are equally good in quality and are comparable to the above 3 songs, but are not that much popular.
These songs have really a "Pon" and "Poo" connection. They are as precious as "Pon" (gold) and gives you a "பூவினால் மேனியை வருடியது போன்றதொரு" feeling:
Song: Pon Enna Poovenna Kanney
Film: Alaigal
Singer: Jayachandran
This was Jayachandran's debut song in Tamil and what a composition he got to begin his stint in Tamil movies.

Song: Ponnenrum Poovenrum
Film: Nilavey Nee Saatchi
Singer: SPB
What an amazing composition? Simply superb usage of Sax. Please also notice the meticulous usage of "morsing" by the Master.

Dear Mr. Venu Sounder,
Sorry for interruption. Among the "pon" songs certainly you should have ''Ponnezhil pooththadhu pudhu vAnil" .
By the way, Singer P.Jeyachandran had his debut in "Manippayal" with the song 'thangachilai pOl azhagO'.
THE SAME MOVIE ALSO HELPED SINGERS
SHOBHA [actor Viyai's mom] and Surendhar open their career as kid singers[ all introduced by MSV of course].
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman

Dear Prof,
Thanks for the additional info.
Regarding P.Jayachandran's debut, both Manippayal and Alaigal were released in the year 1973. May be, Manippayal was released first. But from what I understand, "Ponnenna Poovenna Kanne" was the first song composed by MSV for PJ.
Anyway, while talking about PJ we should certainly listen to the touching and wonderful number "Oru Osaiyinri Mounamaga" from the 1982 film "Paritchaikku Neramachu". What a superb lyric and what an amazing composition, using just 3-4 instruments?

Thanks Mr Ragavendran for the info.
Another great "பொன்" number that I missed out was "பொன்னை விரும்பும் பூமியிலே" from ஆலயமணி.
While on the subject, here is yet another fantastic number composed by our Master especially for LRE. It is "பொன்னாலே வாழும் புதிய உலகம் இது" from the film அன்னையும் பிதாவும். Please listen to it and enjoy:

Pon (Gold) is rare but there are quite a few 'pon' songs among MSV's golden numbers.
'Ponnaana ulagam' from Keezhvaanan sivakkum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwBa6P8petU
'Pon enben' from policekaaran magal
'ponnaana kaigal' from kadhalikka neramillai
'pnmagal vandhaal; from Sorgam
and so on.
I have given the video link for 'ponnaaana ulagam' since it is not heard often. Apart from the beautiful melody, the orchestral 'tickling' MSV gives at the end of the pallavi is unique and instantly enchanting. _________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)

Let's continue with some more of MSV's unforgettable compositions. Here are two amazing compositions, both sung by P.Suseela. I think she must have sung these songs after gulping a bottle of honey - what a voice and what a singing.
The first song is "மலர் எது என் கண்கள்தான் என்று சொல்வேனடி" from "அவளுக்கென்று ஓர் மனம்". What a composition, waw. The start itself is terrific with the Master using Violins, Trambones, Accordian and Vibrafone so beautifully. But the masterpiece is the combo of Trambones and Violins in the second interlude. Listen and enjoy:

The next one is "பாவை பாவைதான் ஆசை ஆசைதான்" from "எங்க மாமா". Again a great composition with magnificent usage of flute, guitar, trumpet and bangos. Normally, you expect MSV to assign such a number to LRE, but the Master gave it to PS and she has done full justice to the song. I am giving below two links for the song - one is the original video from the movie and the other one is a Japanese dance video which has been amazingly mixed for this number. Please let me know, which of the two you like better:

Dear Mr. Venu,
I remember PS narrating in the 'Manathodu Mano' programme in which she said MSV explored her voice in many styles and when it came to club song she referred this song 'Paavai paavaidhan'

Today let's listen to two wonderful duets composed by the Master with TMS and PS. Both the compositions are simply superb.
The first one is "நான் உயர உயரப் போகிறேன் நீயும் வா" from the film "நான் ஆணையிட்டால்". As he has done in so many songs, in this one too the percussion rhythm is unusual and amazing. Also, observe that when TMS sings நான் உயர உயரப் போகிறேன் it is in the upper pitch and when PS replies நான் மயங்கி மயங்கி சாய்கிறேன், it is on the lower side.
Only the legend MSV can compose like this giving importance to the words in the lyric, like he has done in "அதோ அந்தப் பறவை போல வாழ வேண்டும்" where the அதோ is sufficiently extended to signify the distance. Similarly he has done in "நான் மாந்தோப்பில் நின்றிருந்தேன்", extending the தோப்பில் and again in the song "சந்த்ரோதயம் ஒரு பெண்ணானதோ செந்தாமரை இரு கண்ணானதோ", where he has extended the word செந்தாமரை. In one of the episodes of "வாலி ஆயிரம்" on Vasanth TV, கவிஞர் வாலி explained that he was on the sets while this song was being filmed and MGR was simply amazed at the way MSV has composed this song, saying "He is not only a genius in music but in Tamil language also. See how he has extended the word செந்தாமரை, because when the flower செந்தாமரை blooms, it blooms in a big way".
Please watch/listen and enjoy நான் உயர உயரப் போகிறேன் நீயும் வா:

The next one is "பெண் போனால் இந்தப் பெண் போனால்" from "எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை". This is another song where the Master has made TMS to sing in a low pitch. What an usage of Violins and Trumpet, terrific. But the best portion is the usage of Mouth Organ in the second interlude - simply amazing. The picturisation at the Brindavan Gardens, Mysore, is also excellent. Strangely, AIR never used to broadcast this song in those days. Please watch/listen and enjoy:

Long live MSV and his mesmerizing music.
