Congrats Mr. Balaji for your passionate piece. I still remember and relish your excellent postings on Sumaithangi songs. Kavignar's lyrical display is incredible. He has written simple lines to convey profound meanings. He has presented the character of the heroine completely in capsule form. I have nothin more to add than what you have said on the music. Whenever I hear this song, I feel disturbed. This film was lifted to great heights by Kavignar and Mellisai Mannar.
I find that you are close to hitting your 5th century. Pl hit it fast and keep marching towards the millennium goal. _________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)

Dear Ramesh and Parthavi Sir
Thank you. I have very fond memories of this movie and the songs especially Kadavul amaithu vaitha medai and Deivam thandha veedu were talk of Chennai . Kadavul amaithu ....was played on all light music programmes.
And Ramesh.... that climax BGM was novel.... Sometime , I have seen without BGM and with too ! Lots of thought process went into creating a scene..
Parthavi Sir,
True. Trait of the central character was indeed captured in capsule by Kavignar and KB was blessed to have 2 Geniuses who added immense value to his creations.
The MSV mystery still remains ! When I started identifying the raga content, I thought it must be a product of Mohanam as the Pallavi oscillates between G3 and R2 . At the end of the Pallavi...En manam enna vendru...... MSV takes us to N3 and also M2 which are all Kalyani notes ! Shall we say that its Mohana Kalyani ? |

Dear Mr. Balaji,
Thanks for reminding one of the great song as far as the composition value and the emotive expression is concerned. This is a personal favorite of MSV who said in an interview.
Some times some songs which has a greater value and in terms of composition and emotive expressions gets buried by the other songs of the same movie due to film situation, star value who sings etc. A classical example of a particular type is 'Ooraariyam naadagam aadinaal' in 'sumathi en sundhari' which got buried with other hits like 'pottu vaitha mugamo' etc.
As far as the raga content is concerned as you rightly said it starts with a shade of mohanam, but shifts to the notes 'n2' (you mentioned n3 which I think is a typing mistake) and gets through m2 (prathi madhyamam)which of course is of kalayaani.
But there is further surprise. In the charanam it goes through the note m1 (sudha madhyamam) at the place 'neruppendru sonnal neerilum anauyum' and goes through the same note for the next 2 lines and then comes back to the kalayani route when the line 'yaararivaroo iravanin poruppu'.
Now how to call this song with a raga name. If the starting of the pallavi is mohana and end through kalayani and during the charanam if it goes through m1 which then we may call as sankarabaranam or we could call it as yaman kalayani which gets both the notes of m1 and m2 but which does not show any shade of the raga melody. This types of composition should be aptly named as 'How to name it?'
There are N number of songs which falls in this category and worse some songs even goes to ni1, da1 etc with a above mentioned notes.
MSV adapted a particular style which unique of his own in which he starts the song in mohana but deviates immediately with in two lines of lyric. This style he started and exploited especially after parting off with TKR. His first compositions is itself a testimony which is 'Velli kizhamai visiyum velai'
Hundreds and hundreds of songs can be quoted as an example. I give a few
Velli mani oosayile
oru naalile urvaanadhe
sirithaal thanga padumai
kadalooram vaangiva kaathu
vizhiye kadhai yezhudhu
kuzhandyayum deivamum gunathaal ondru
thanga thoniyile
kettavarellam paadalam
kattazhagu thanga magal thiru naalo
This list inconclusive.
But MSV insists that he never kept any raga in mind unless the situation warrants. a classical type

Murali Sir
True ! the notes also touch upon M1 which is Shankarabaranam . And thanks for the list . They too have the flavour There is a general perception that Ilayaraja was the one who had applied Mohanam or relative raga maxium . May be more of MSV to be unearthed now !
Sir, I decipher the notes on the following lines :
R1 shudhDha rishabham D1 shudhDha dhaivatham
R2 chathushruthi rishabham D2 chathushruthi dhaivatham
R3 sathshruthi rishabham D3 sathshruthi dhaivatham
G1 shudhDha gAndhAram N1 shudhDha nishAdham
G2 sAdhArana gAndhAram N2 kaishiki nishAdham
G3 anthara gAndhAram N3 kAkaLi nishAdham
M1 shudhDha madhyamam M2 prathi madhyamam
So for Kalyani / Shankarabaranam / Mayamalavagowla etc, I follow N3 and thats why used N3 |

Dear Sirs,
This song evokes a nostalgic feeling too! The background tabla is so soft and added with the bass guitar's support, it feels like heaven to move with the wave as the tabla progresses. Great tabla accompaniment by tabla Prasad, and no less compared to Shehnai and sitar, of course!

Dear All,
MSV used 5 top singers (Yesudoss, SPB, S.Janaki, P.Suseela, LRE) for 5 songs in this movie which is another special.
Each song is unique in its own way. Deivam thandha veedu made Yesudoss very popular. _________________ Meendum Santhippom Viraivil...
