I happened to hear the songs of Pattanathil Bhootam on a CD yesterday. The M.D. for this film, as you know, was R.Govardhanam, brother of another very talented composer - R. Sudarshanam. Though I have heard them dozens of times before, I was struck again by how melodious and rich each song was. Whether it is "Ulagathil sirandhadhu yedhu" or "Andha Sivagami maganidam" or "Kannil kandadhellam katchiya" or "Ehirparamal virundhali" or "Idhazhai virithadhu roja" - every song is a gem, worthy of coming from the harmonium of the peerless MSV himself. The lovely tunes, the imaginative orchestration which allows TMS and PS full scope to prove their prowess, the beautiful lyrics of Kannadasan - all are as good as anything which came from the MSV stable.
I know Govardhanam composed music for a couple of other films, including Poovum Pottum, Kairasi and Varaprasadam. What a talented genius! I am reminded of the other hugely talented assistant in TFM who liked to avoid the limelight, preferring to offer full support to his boss from the sidelines instead, namely, Pughazhendi - KVM's assistant for so many decades.
Wonder how things would have been if Govardhanam had composed music for a larger number of films! Another of those "What If" questions which tickle one's imagination!
Friends may please add their thoughts. _________________ Srini |

Friends,
It was largely due to the humble nature, they say, of this great man. It was told that he had even helped Deva in conducting the orchestra!
Not all assistants achieved glory! A few like GKV, who assisted the master, and other members of his orchestra like Shyam, KJJoy, Shankar, Ganesh, etc. could make a name for themselves. Probably, as you have rightly mentioned, Govardhanam was exceptional like Pughazendi for KVM.
