Dear Friends,
Another interesting movie of the times was "PUDHIYA PARAVAI"; Interesting for various aspects. Unlike "kn" , "P P" was star studded with all the known members- Sowcar, Saroja Devi, NT, MRRadha, A Karunanidhi, Nagesh and a host of others handled by Dadha Mirasi the Director. NT was the producer of the movie.
Despite THE HUGE STAR CAST, the movie had a fine treatment of the screen play that rendered the right effect of a thickening plot reaching its pinnacle in the song 'yengE nimmadhi'.
Though in the earlier era there have been a few movies of concealed plots, "PP" was a new dimension by virtue of the course of sequences presented on screen. An element of surprise was managed by planting MRRadha in an attire -as to be accepted as the villain- he 'used' to be. On the whole it was a well contrieved presentation in colour - a trend that was taking roots then. Naturally, it had to cater to visuals though long stretches of the movie were indoors except for a few shots outdoors. One of the strong points of the movie was the rich costume for all the lead characters, though the quality of colour rendition was a debatable point in that period of TF history.
Though a heavy plot , substantial viewing pleasure was generated by the variety of songs- all shared between TMS PS. There was not a song for LRE though there was more than a scope from the story line- firmly suggesting meticulous choice and relevance observed by makers.

Every song of the movie unequivocally declared immense compositional vicissitudes of MMs- way back in an era of 'live recording' full of life.
Each number was different by the 'feel' generated.

'unnai ondru kEtpEn' - P S
The song though richly orchestrated , faithfully underscores the sorrow plight of the character on screen, so ably painted by the lyric and tune- not to speak of the brilliant blend of instruments handled to perfect unison.

'pArtha gnyabagam illayO'- P S
The song very strongly registered MSV's penchant for Bongo. The opening play of Bongo was both vigorus ans dexterous that rumours were thick in the air then that 'Viswanathan had hired some African player for this instrument' as many people were not even aware of the name of it; that got compounded by the picturisation where an African player is shown on screen. The song mood has been well elevated by the typical MSV Chorus touching new fringes of the game of mood elevation.

The pathos version of the song that appears later in the movie, just creates panic through the guilty character on screen by totally different mode of chorus singing and bizarre play of interludes [all in 1963-64!]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Aha mella nada' - TMS
Perhaps the most sedate number in the movie used to keep concealed the real plot of the movie; nice for its elegant orchestration.

'chittukkuruvi muththam koduthu' -PS
Avery pleasing song worded to cause 'personal enjoyment' to listener and as such the two songs within the blocked field are independent expressions for driving the story though there is no true love and so no duet through the movie.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'engE nimmadhi'
Truly a massive song by every count; be it length, conveying of heavy feel, sickening effect of guilt and above all a music score that defies all effort to decipher how so many parallels by way of strings, violins, percusions drawn and withdrawn to telling effect have been 'conceived, arranged and executed' to absolute precision. Any number of listening does not help understanding the intricate organization; instead it promotes the singular awe that none other than MSV can ever imagine such a robust orchestration -no matter how experienced the MD is.

In a period of sheer labour with no commensurate reward or honour VR have lent their heart and soul to an industry that seems to have no heart. But Divinity knows whom to guard.

Others please add your perception. If need be, please open a new thread LOOKING BACK -aptly numbered 12 or 13 or whatever so that we can demonstrate that so much of feeling runs through us by keeping our postings under the same thread.

Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai
