Dear Friends,
An impoverished analyst of the kind of mine should avoid ventures of song analysis. Sometimes desire overrides awareness more from an uncontrolled affection to a composition than from the abilities to handle the task. Hope our forum friends tolerate this piece of mine.
'THATHTHAI NENJAM' PS SADAN
Of the so many songs in "SS", this particular piece looks extremely innovative in terms of Parrot calls so very elegantly inserted to add an element of intimacy between the bird and the master [I mean the screen artiste- KR V].
There have been movies with parrots in the company of artistes. Perhaps this was the earliest to portray near real participation by the bird at all appropriate locales. My calling it near real rests on the observation that through the song at most places the Directors [K - P] have taken pains to SHOW THE PARROT IN singing mode even as the utterance appears in the song.
As for MSV, these are items of child play, as he has been the lone MD to have employed mimics and unconventional sound inserts just to achieve the richest effect.
Coming to the song, the following spots/ points need being recalled.
1 Insertion of parrot voice has been done to ONLY TERMINAL WORDS OF Pallavi and at other spots, bird response had been added either as visual or as audio element.
2 Words- Nenjam, MuthathilE, illayA, Andha, are used for voice play of parrot by Sadan. Being short, these words readily win acceptance for bird utterance. Consider how deep the makers have studied the situation.
3. Care has been taken to sustain the tune value by adding bird calls only after the lyric tune ends. This way , the tune registers neat with the keen listener while the parrot voice comes as a pleasant but unobtrusive addition.
4. Through the lyric when 'koththum kiLi' appears, the bird [Sadan] lets off a longish squeak in acknowledgement 'his' participation'.
5. At a couple of other spots the bird's short bursts of "tschn tschn" has been used.
Wherever the bird voice enters, it has been so very natural that the song not only stays intact but gets elegantly embellished as well.
In view such an assemblage, the orchestration has been rather polite for this song [next only to 'aththAn en aththAn']. If we keep probing into the assembly of such simple songs, they reveal that they are simply great and that MSV is undoubtedly the greatest in nuances.
