Dear Friends,
I recently purchased the CD of ‘Vaaliban Sutrum Ulagam’. There is song ‘Unnai naan santhithen’ which is very good. The specialty of the song is that the lyrics has been written with the already existing old song but has been linked beautifully to give the meaning. As usual MSV composed in his traditional style. The song has been sung by SPB and Chitra and the words are clearly audible.
The prelude starts with the guitar with the same melody of the pallavi that is to follow with the counter melody of violin plugging. This is followed by the accordion (keyboard) and further followed by flute and a combination of keyboard as the pallavi starts.
The pallavi is
Chitra: Unnai naan santhithen nee aayirathil oruvan
SPB : Naan paarthathile un oruthiyai than nalla azahigiyenben nalla azahigiyenben
Chitra: Nee ennena sonaalum kavidhai
SPB: Unnai engengu thottlaum enimai
The tune for the pallavi is very simple but catchy. As usual the line of SPB goes through sa-ga2-pa, sa-ma2-da2 route which is MSV’S special. The tune for lines of SPB compared to that of Chitra are unexpected.
The first charanam is
Chitra: Thottal poo malarum thodaamal naan malardhen
SPB: Meduva meduva thodalaama un maniyile kai padalaama
Chitra: Kalyaana naal parka sollalamaa kaiyodu kai serthu kollalaama
SPB: Unakku enukkum dhan porutham idhil ethanai kankalukku varutham (unnai naan)
In the pallavi the melody for the line ‘thottal poo malarum’ goes through ‘ni1’ which is the sharp note. The line ‘meduva’ is different melody from the first line as it goes through ‘da1’ and again comes back to the original melody during ‘un meniyile kai padalaama’. Again the third line ‘kalyaana naal parka sollalaama’ starts with different route of ‘da2’ and thus MSV gives the variation of ‘da1’ and ‘da2’ in the two lines. Again the line ‘unakku enakkum dhan porutham’ is different from the hither to melody and it involves ‘da1’ at which is MSV special as the line involves the word ‘varutham’.
The second chranam is
SPB: Nann oru kuzhandai nee oru kuzhandai oruvar madiyile oruvar adi
Chitra: Pallavan pallavi paadattume angu parthiban kaadali agattume
SPB: Pesuvadhu kiliyaa illai pennarasi mozhiya
Chitra: Paaduvadhu kaviyaa illai paarivallal maganaa
The tune for the second charanam is different from the first for the first two lines and same for the last two lines.
This is followed by humming by SPB and Chitra and that itself is the prelude for the third charanam.
The third charanam starts with very beautiful unknown territory which is ‘ma2’. This is a brilliant phrase in the song.
Chitra: Pattukku patteduthu naan paaduvadhai ketpayo.
SPB: Pattu varum pattu varum unnai paarthukondirundhal pattu varum.
Chitra: Paduvor Padinaal Aada Thondrum Paaludan then kani sera vendum.
SPB: Padumbodhu naan thendral kaatru paruvamangaiyo thennankeetru (unnai)
The whole song involves the scale
Sa-ri2-ga2-ma2-pa-da2-ni2-sa with the notes ‘ni1’, ‘da1’, ‘ma2’ all aptly used as a sharp notes and hence the chords gets changed during the sharp notes. Of course this is MSV original style.
The listener is advised not to have any aberration of a MSV composition during 1960’s. Hear the song couple of times then we would start understanding the nuances and then we can enjoy the song when I heard the first time I had the same feeling.
Let us see whether this song comes in the FM channel during day time when only new songs are broadcasted.
Regards,
