Ragasuda, I am really surprised to note that so many movies of MGR were actually flops. But the point to note here, the songs' popularity soared and continues to soar until today. That is the greatness of MSV. Completely unparalleled !!!! He poured like none else. He can pour now like none else.
Dear Vatsan,
One point I would like to clarify. During my school days, though I was and am a Sivaji Fan, a few films of MGR I went to see were mainly for MSV's music and particularly background score. The films I mentioned not only had outstanding songs but also unparallelled background music by MM. When the songs enthused us s more it was disappointing that the films did not get the success they deserved. That was what my feeling which I expressed in my previous post and let us not get dwelve into flops or such topics since this forum consists fans of all stars including Sivaji, MGR, Gemini Ganesan and so on.
In fact, in Sridar's Alaigal, MSV had touched the peaks in bgm, when Chandrakala would be caught in the Red Light trap and Vishnuvardan meeting her. Because of this film's unfortunate failure, MSV's hard work went unnoticed. There are many such instances.
Raghavendran.

Ramesh P, couldn't agree with you more. 'ulgamengum orE mozhi' is one of a kind number, an introspective look by the lovers into the 'thing' that has been created between them ....'love'. The song has no overt expression of delight, it is almost solemn. But look at the way it has been picturized !!! The counter-points placed in this song have often given me goose bumps. And what a timely tap on the tabla...happens only when the pallavi commences and then the tabla subsides !!! Beautifully conceived !!! MSV innovated and created and kept innovating and creating only for the joy he derived out of doing so. So did his twin soul, Kannadasan. The benevolent geniuses radiated arty blessings to one and all without exceptions. Two of a kind !!!

Dear Mr.Ragasuda
You have touched a pertinent point in "AlaigaL" of CVS.The movie had an excellent number by P Jeyachandran in 'ponnenna poovenna peNNae, un kaNNadi uLLththin munnae'.Also, the movie had adopted a new technique of depicting a scene by handrawn sketches supprorted by a song in backdrop. The same depicted portrayal was also found in in the malayaLam movie "paNi theeraatha veedu." Both the movies were very good by their simplicity of narration and brilliant music by MSV. As you have said such efforts went down unsung.
I am reminded of another excellent movie that suffered a similar fate. It was a short movie titled "Uyir" with 3 good songs and the music was scored by Mr.Ramana Sridhar who later changed his name as Raghavendar and took to acting.[If I am not wrong singer Kalpana is his daughter ] 1973 was an period of pervert audience backing up wrong products. If you consider the fate of the technicians of these projects, necessarily 'pity' is the word to be used. In the case of Raghavendar in "uyir" as MD, certainly something better would have happened to him had the movie clicked with the audience. Story, acting treatment and other components of the movie were not bad at all. Yet, it failed or the audience failed the movie while several other stupid items survived better in the same period. Cinema is shrouded in uncertainties.
Thank you for the opportunity.
War regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Professor,
Certainly Uyir deserved more. I saw the film on its 2nd day of release at the Midland Theatre. It was a topic meant for matured audience and was time ahead. Muthuraman and Lakshmi being the lead pair, they 'lived' their roles. The bgm was inspired by MM and the songs were different in styles. The songs Paalo pazhamo, and Naanama mai vizhiyil naanama, both sung by T.M.S. and P.Susila, were simply melodious and rendered by the veterans in style. And the instruments used by Ramana Sridhar were very meagre and he brought out the best in him in this film. Later he also shone as a singer in the film Yaagasalai.
Coming to Alaigal, the film was released in Odeon in Royapettah, where I saw the film in the first week itself, without any difficulty. I could count the audience in the theatre. For a hardcore connoisseur of cinema and music, it was a distressing sight. However the same little crowd helped me enjoy the nuances of the film thoroughly, particularly as I mentioned the bgm. The speakers at the Odeon (now Melody) produced crystal clear sound and we could enjoy the music of MM. In the same way, we enjoyed Vaira Nenjam music also at the same Theatre. Whatever high=tech configuration may come, they can not give you the pleasure which we got through MM's bgm in the non-a/c theatre during the evening show with all the windows open and air breezing through. And the songs Ponnenna poovenna kanne by Jayachandran and Oomai pennai pesa chonnal uravo by S. Janaki, besides two chorus songs (vangayya vanga incl), sat immediately in our hearts.
RAghavendran.

Dear Raghavendran,

Thanks for the list of songs, film-wise, with other related information too.

You have listed "Sanghey Muzhangu" under "Chandhrodhayam". But this song is from "Kalangarai ViLakkam".

Incidentally, "Kalangarai ViLakkam" was the first movie for which MSV scored music without the company of TKR. But T.R. Ramanna's "Nee" was the first movie to be released with music by only MSV.

Regards,

Venu Soundar

Ragasudha,

Anandhi that was released in 1965 before Neelavanam is missing in this list.

Directed by P.Neelakantan with SSR-Viyakumari in main roles.

This film had several good songs.

Thanks.

Dear Venu Sir,
Thank you for pointing out the mistake. Sange Muzangu is from Kalangarai Vilakkam and I was listening to it when typing the filmography the influence of which made me post it. Kindly pardon me.
Dear Jeev,
Actually many portions of the film of Anandhi were done by Viswanathan-Ramamurthy duo and the film was stalled for a while due to reasons best known to the producers. Later on when they resumed production, MSV had already established himself and generously accepted and completed the movie and one or two songs were also composed in addition to the song Kannile Anbirundal. In fact, I learnt that the TMS version was added again by Mellisai Mannar, while the P Susila version was done by Viswanathan Ramamurthi. Though the title card reads M.S.Viswanathan only, there was considerable part of the film done by Viswanathan-Ramamurthi. At the end Mellisai Mannar done rerecording almost for half of the film. Any way I shall post the filmography of Anandhi here.
Thank you for alerting me,
Raghavendran
