Hai Friends,

How can a song be composed for a particular situation and show the inner emotions of a character? See this song and feel for yourselves.

The song is ‘velli mani oosaiyile’ in the movie ‘Iru Malargal’. The situation is like this.
KRV being related to Sivaji had been told right from her young age that she would marry him. So she develops love with him. But Sivaji being fallen in love with another girl(Padmini) would be neglecting KRV. In this situation KRV sings this song. How does the great composer expresses her inner emotions through music?

The song is composed mainly on the raga ‘Mohanam’.
The aarohanam of ‘Mohanam’ is
Sa, ri2, ga2, pa, da2, sa

The avarohanam is

Sa, da2, pa, ga2, ri2, sa

The raga is changed in the 3rd line itself and with mixing of swaram ‘ni2’ (‘mannan varum velaiyile’) and the forth line comes with the mixture of ‘ma1’ (‘vazhvu varum poongodiye’). The reason for mixing could be for better chords accompaniment. Anyway that is not the subject we are discussing.

Now comes charanam. The line starts with ‘pirandhu vanden nooru murai, mannavan kai serum varai’. This line is also in 'mohanam' with the mixture of 'ma1'

He brings his geniusness in the next line. ‘thavam irunden kodi murai’. You would notice here the tune changes. Why? Because of the line. So far the character expressed her emotion via this song about the general aspect of her emotions of love. But in this line she describes what she did to achieve that. That she had born 100 times again and again. She also wants to convey this emotion to the male character in a sober way. The word sober? In fact I find no matching word to express her emotions. In Tamizh we can say (kenjudhal) or (irainjudhal). She tried in a normal way. But not satisfied herself tries this method (irainjudhal). So it is an opposite method. The compositon mixes a swaram ‘da1’ when she sings this line ‘thavamirunden kodi murai’. I have always mentioned that the swarams like ‘ri1’, ‘ga1’, ‘da1’ and ‘ni1’ give a sharp effect when composed in conjunction with the melody with other ‘ri’ or ga’ etc. So the mixing of the ‘da1’ gives that effect.

What does our master do next ? He repeats the same line ‘thavamirunden kodi urai’. Why? Because the line is ‘kodi murai (one crore times thavam irundal).

He brings in his geniusness further. How?

while repeating the same line second time he changes the tune further.
So even though the line is sung two times each time it is different to each other. The reason for the change during second time is because he mixes the swaram ‘ni1’.
But why?. Because the character is not satisfied with that ‘iranjudhal’ one time and goes further one more time. Since he wants to convey the further ‘iraijudhal’ a new tune for the same line. What induced him to do so? The reason could be the first line ‘pirandhu vanden nooru murai’. If she had born again and again MSV also wanted to highlight her different ‘jenmam’ with different tunes atleast 2 times since he could not repeat that 100 times. So just by repeating the line 2 times he achieves his purpose.

One by repeating the line which is hooked by the word ‘kodi murai’

Two emotion through by a tune change.

Three by changing the tune during the repation to convey further ‘iranjudhal’

Since each life in a 'janmam' would be different to each other he also showed with different tune for the same line.

What a composer ?. Is he doing all this with plan. No.It flows from godess saraswathi like a river.

He completes the charanam with the same tune of the 4th line of the pallavi. I always feel MSV is one composer who never believes in a raga concept based composition. He will set tune for the word with appropriate usage of swarams to convey the emotion. But after going to various change of swarams he has his own method to come back to the pallavi.

Now the kavinger would have notice this. He does want to lag behind. He puts more powerful words in the next charanam with ‘manadhu vaithal serndhirukka’. Not only that. If you notice the whole song the kavinger has adopted a method. That is in the first charanam the female charcters explains what she did to achieve the love and affection from the male. In the second charanam she conveys what result she wants. Total clarity in the message. There has been so much healthy competion between the kavinger and the composer that the end product is a golden era. We all should be happy to live in this era.

See you friends,

Mr RAJESH KUMAR

Thanks for mentioning the name of the lyrics writter. When I mentioned I did not mean kannadasan and meant only the lyrics writter since at the time of wriiting I was not sure about that. since the main subject was composing I did not bother to find that out. However your information has completed that also. The lyrics writter also has to take the credit for the success of the song

Dear Murali,

Great analysis of a geat song !

Your writing on how the Master touches your (our) innerselves by changing ragaas and tunes in each line, that too, so naturally, effortlessly in the song, is something wonderful !

Pl keep writing

Ramki
