Some gems produced by MSV are getting dusted because ther have not been taken out for a long time. We need to take them out, and dust them off at least now and then.

வெத்தல போட்ட பத்தினிப்பொண்ணு சுத்துது முன்னாலே
சொக்குது கண்ணு மெச்சுது பொண்ணு கட்டிக்க மாப்பிள்ளே!

This beautiful song is from Veera Thirumagan. This song is a chorus led by TMS. Strangely, this only song of TMS in this film had been overshadowed by PBS' stunning numbers 'Paadaaatha Paattellaam' and 'Roja Malare.'

This is a lovely song and makes singing it a pleasure. TMS sings this as if in a casual manner in keeping with the light sense of the song. The pallavi, charanams and the interludes including the 'laalaa laalaa laalaa laa' are just beautiful. I am not an expert in music appreciation and am unable to describe the nuances of the song. Suffice it to say that this is a listening pleasure.

My father had no special interest in film music but he would be attracted by certain songs when he happens to hear them on the radio and he will be singing those songs rather unconsciously. This song was one of his favorites. The humorous lyrics also should have amused him.

I also sometimes sing old film songs, often uncosciously. When my son was a child, he would immediately capture whatever I sing and would reproduce them instantly. My relatives have often enjoyed making him render some such songs during family functions.'Manithan enbavan deivam aagalaam' was one of his favorites. He was 2 years plus when my wife took him along in a bus. He was also tall and would appear older than he was in his childhood. The conductor had asked my wife to purchase a ticket for him and my wife had told him that the boy was only two years old. Soon after,my son started singing:

வெத்தல போட்ட பத்தினிப்பொண்ணு சுத்துது முன்னாலே
சொக்குது கண்ணு மெச்சுது பொண்ணு கட்டிக்க மாப்பிள்ளே!

Everyone had laughed hearing this.(Most of them would not have been familiar with this song!) But the conductor asked my wife:
பையனுக்கு ரென்டு வயசுதான்னு சொன்னீனஙக ஆனா பையன் இந்தப் பாட்டெல்லாம் பாடுறானே!

In a way this song is connecting three generations of my family!

On the other hand, MSV has saved me a lot of busfare (the amount will be more if I treat this as auto fare or taxi fare) I have walked miles without feeling the distance by mentally humming some MSV songs and losing myself in the ecstacy of the song!

THis is a song that has been haunting me ever since I rediscovered it. It is available in www.musicindiaonline.com
The movie is "annayum pithAvum". This movie had another great song "malarum mangayum oru jAthi"

The song is "muthhAna oorvOlamO" sung by LR Easwari.

hummaa.com is aother site. Under Tamil films, make a search for artist - Viswanathan or Viswanathan Ramamurthy or M.S.Viswanathan. There are more than 1000 songs listed there. You can listen to songs without being a member. But if you become a member (membership is free) you can login and create your own playlists - that is you can save a number of songs in a folder. Then if you play the list, you can hear all the songs. It is like a virtual cassette recorder. But I experience some delay, break etc. I don't know whether the problem is with the site or with my internet speed. But it works fine if you play one song at a time.
Another interesting thing is that for many songs, MSV explains the background. It is like another Endrum MSV. I think these have been compiled from various interviews and programs given by him. Professor may use some, if he can find something new and if there is still time to add something more to the wonderful bok he has been creating.

raagaa.com also has number of songs.

Dear Mr. PR SWAMI
THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION ON MSV SONGS.
But, I really do not understand your reference to the compilation as the "wonderful" book. I do not know if it carries any cryptic connotation. As of now, the compilation / editing of the English version is over and currently tallying the indices and the text is going on. There is so much of labour about it and God willing everything should turn out good.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Prof,
My description of the book as "wonderful" was based on the subject and on the expectation of its contents, considering your enthusiasm and efforts. There was nohing cryptic about it.

For everyone:

I give below the link for Hamma.com. The contents of Raagaa.com seem to have changed now.I t is years since I logged into it. After discovering Humma.com, I didn't visit raagaa.com. Hamma.com is very good.

2. Kalyana Valayosai kondu...

I have written about 'vethala potta paththini ponnu'from Veerathirumagan at the beginning of this link.

Here is the link for this teasing song (like Paarappa Pazhaniappa)!

Enjoy.
