|
|
Dear friends,
Irresistably I am opening the topic under this thread, though I am quite aware that the write-up would not satisfy all requirements of a song analysis. Still I brave it on 2 counts. 1 to share with friends my delight and 2 any of my inadequacy in analysis would be rectified by our friends as they would add their response. So, let me give my piece as under.
Song : POURNAMI NILAVIL PANI VIZHUM IRAVIL
Movie: Kannippenn Singers : SPB and SJ
MD : Mellisai mamannar MSV
This song was a superhit from day one of its arrival in 70s and has lived in glory ever since. On my hearing it the nth time today several dimensions appeared , making me wonder if we would ever be able to stop declaring that "I have understood this number in all its entirety". It is one of the masterpieces of master MSV. Being not given to decipher "raga patterns" and scale variations, I should lay contented with pointing out spots that behold attention. It is a beauty by any assessment and I post the song and my responses.
Lyric
SPB - Pounami nilavil pani vizhum iravil kadarkarai manalil iruppomaa
SJ - Mounaththin mozhiyol mayakkaththin nilaiyil kadhai kadhaiyaaga
padippoma
Pallavi repeated independently with 2 repeats of the first half of pallavi.
Charanam 1
SPB -Kamban thamizho paatiinilae Sanga thamizho Maduraiyilae
Pillaithamizho mazhaliyilae Neee paesum thamizho vizhiyinilae
[ SPB renders in a higher pitch and brisk pace]
SJ - Nenjam muzhuthum kavithai ezhudhu
Konjum isaiyai pazhagum pozhudhu [rendererd in a slow seductive
pace]
SPB- Thullum ilamaiparuvam namadhu
Thottu thazhuvum sugamo pudhidhu [ Rendered in slow romantic
voice]
SJ - Kan paarvaiyae un pudhuppadalO
SPB- Pon veenaiyae un poo maeniyO [ both sustain fast pace ]
SPB
SJ Repeat their pallavi lines once
Charanam 2
SJ -Pillai paruvam thai madiyil paesum paruvam Thamizh madiyil
Kannipparuvam en vadivil Kaalam muzhum un madiyil
[ higher pitch and pace]
SPB Panneer mazhai thaan vizhi mael pozhiya
Thanneer alai pol kuzhal thaan neLiya [ low pitch romantic voice
vibrations]
SJ Thannan thanimai thaNal pol kodhikka
Thanjam pugundhaL unai thaan aNaikka [ same pitch as for SPB]
SPB PonnOviyam un mana maedaiyO
SJ - SollOviyam un oru JaadaiyO [Both rapidly race through]
Pallavi lines together repeated by SPB and SJ
A grand winding up by humming in a style entirely new by MSV as
Oohuhuhuhu oohum Oohuhuhuhu oohum Oohuhuhuhu oohum.
The song opens with a very short burst of strings suggesting the opening.
As such there is no prelude for the song with a rapidly scaling up pallavi rendered in male voice and the female voice responds alike with a different couplet. The tempo is kept intact by Tabla as the lone instrument.
Soon as the pallavi closes a fine play of strings provide PACY INTERLUDE inviting the singers to join. The pallavi is repeated this time with a repetition of the first half of pallavi fully backed up by only Tabla.
The second interlude has the sequence Strings , violins and flute finely blended but all in a pacy relay of Notes with no let up anywhere, though no percussion along.
As SPB OPENS "KAMBAN THAMIZHO" again Tabla merges in the background and makes a pacy backup for "Sangathamizho Maduraiyale" and precisely drops to scale for the next line "Pillaithamizho mazhalaiyilae"
The mid charanam has a different scale with slow romantic flexuous rendition where in the lone percussion is a distant drum. I call it distant as it just careses the song from somewhere not proclaiming its presence. But leaves us floating as the song moves on. In the finishing lines of this charanam again Tabla steps in restoring the grandeur of the lofty note.
When again the pallavi is repeated still it is only Tabla.
This time the interlude has strings a flash bit of Bango{?] , strings . flute, strings, violins and strings performing a quick relay sustaining the transition before Janaki opens on a pacy charanam note "Pillai paruvam"
The mid charanam is a gentle-paced romance both in lyric, tune and orchestration where the percussion is from the distant drum. However the last piece of charanam has quick burst singing with tabla back up. Soon after the joint rendition of pallavi MSV has embellished the song with a humming exclusive to this number as scripted above.
Quite a few features stand out in this grand composition of MSV.
There is an alteration and alternation of pace with in the charanam segments. Equal pace shifts have been given to SPB and SJ.
Though the interlude notes are identical, a new feeling arises to the listener, from the modified sequences of Strings . violins flute and again strings / violins at different locales. Percussion play is used only when singers are operative [not during interludes- at least it appears so] Even here MSV has inserted a magic of low decibel drums in all slow paced charanam segments and Tabla for pacy schedules of charanam and pallavi. The grand humming is gently backed up by drum so finely caressed. A marvellous piece by every standard. A song that has used the Tamizh speciality "ZHa" at most spots calling for precise rendition.
A rich crown on MSV's prowess.
Our friends may enlighten us of the technicalities of this song.

Dear Prof,
I am thrilled about your observations of the song yopu have chosen. As a matter of fact we sail on the same boat as far as "technicality" of the song is considered. But who cares????? If MSV is above Ragas and all boudaries, then we are his devotees and those exemptions will be applicable for us also . So please go ahead and unleash yourself. It was a nice write-up to enlighten me.

Dear Prof.,
That was a wonderful analysis as usual for a beautiful song.
Particularly I like the following bit of the song.
Charanam 1
SJ - Nenjam muzhuthum kavithai ezhudhu Konjum isaiyai pazhagum pozhudhu
SPB- Thullum ilamaiparuvam namadhu Thottu thazhuvum sugamo pudhidhu
Charanam 2
SPB Panneer mazhai thaan vizhi mael pozhiya Thanneer alai pol kuzhal thaan neLiya
SJ Thannan thanimai thaNal pol kodhikka Thanjam pugundhaL unai thaan aNaikka
Recently this movie was shown in SunTV. I watched the full movie just for its songs.
Other beauties of the movies are:
Adiyendi asattupenne... PS and SJ (Worth a separate thread)
Oli piranthapodhu mannil uyirgal piranthathamma... TMS and LRE. _________________ Meendum Santhippom Viraivil...

Dear Prof.
This song is a favourite for Veena Prodigy Gayathri ! Once she played it beautifully . The interludes running breezily fascinated her ! Neither SPB nor SJ should forget this song .
For me, the captivating part is.....Thullum ilamai paruvam namadhu...wonderful orchestration again |

Dear Mr. Jeev,
Thank you for the information on 'kulunga kulunga ' the song from "kai koduththa deivam". Honestly, all these years I have ben under the impression that it is sung by PS accompanied by some chorus voices; Certainly I did not know of LRE's participation.
Thank you Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman
