Kaviya thalaivi , Sowcar Janaki’s movie should be probably the best performance of this versatile actress. Directed by K.B., the movie released during 1970, the peak period of MSV . KB-MSV combination always rocked and this movie’s songs were highly popular …..inspired from a Bengali version, Sowcar plays the character of a Mother and Daughter…The Mother and Gemini Ganesan ( Lawyer by profession ) are mutually in love but forced by circumstances, she gets married to an errand M.R.R.Vasu whose sole intention will be to exploit her….Frustrated by his behaviour , she moves away from him …..she has to bring up her kid Krishnaa …..again, the vicissitudes of life forces to play a Courtesan …..continuing with his life as a Bachelor , Gemini meets Sowcar again …she repents for having taken up such a profession and requests him to groom the kid , give a good social life and upbringing….Gemini, as assured, brings her up well and makes her a Lawyer as well as his Junior…the Daughter Krishnaa will be respectful and admire GG but the vacuum created being motherless always haunts her….on the occasion of her birthday, she expresses her dream of meeting her Mother sometime in life….

The Mother stays under the custody of GG in an isolated place but she pleads to him not to unravel her gory past ( she also kills MRRV as he threatens to spoil the life her daughter too )…however she wishes to be present for the birthday celebrations and watches from a remote corner of the place where the party is being held….

The song takes off on an emotional chord with the daughter expressing her desire to see her Mother someday in life….unable to resist her emotions, the Mother bursts out singing the same ! as the daughter observes the voice, GG comforts her saying that it must be from a Radio programme….the song continues with the Mother responding to the concern of daughter and ends on a tearful note…

Splendid work by MSV – Kavignar ….the tune & the Shehnai will exactly convey the frame of mind of the 2 characters..interestingly, P.Susheela sings for both …one can distinctly hear the difference…..for the daughter, the yearning for not having seen her mother and that tearful Mother’s helplessness having deprived her daughter ,her care and love….Its extraordinary singing by P.Susheela who brings subtle variations and gives the ideal output to an emotional situation…

The song starts on normal pitch gradually goes to high pitch and continues until finish….

Sowcar , a class actress always displayed flair to whatever role she had played…this movie is full circle for her….the intial scenes cover the love with GG followed by harassment from MRRV, the isolation phase, the Courtesan period, the post killing turmoil she had to face the legal battle and finally meeting her daughter and the life ends at the Court itself….the daughter displays high level of etiquette and decorum….a tough character who almost goes against her mother ( unknowingly ) but on realizing the truth through GG, appears as her Counsel and makes an emotional and tearful case in the Court…..

Sowcar’s characterization in Irukodugal & Uyarndha manidhan deserves mention….she was sensational in Puthiya paravai !

A movie with memorable songs……Kaiyodu kai serkum kalangale is a delightful P.Susheela solo with some superb Accordion work……Well…Aarambam indre aagattum is a lovely SPB-LRE duet , the scintillating orchestration which our SriramLakshman should explore indepth…

Balaji the great story teller on course yet again Smile Lucid write-up on a great number. This and 'mAlai pozhuthin..' are songs I hate to hear as the effect lasts for too long...days together.

Sir,

A fine song beautifully worded and excellently rendered by Sushila and equally well enacted on the screen by Sowcar Janaki.

This film was first made in Hindii (Mamta) was a boxc office hit. It carried some memorable songs composed by ROSHAN (father of Rajesh Roshan a current day music director of bollywood)

But this particular song was not there in the Hindi version. Although in Hindi Suchitra Sen acted very well but Sowcar perforance was outstanding.

Dear Balaji,

Your analysis on ORU NAAL IRAVU PAGAL POL NILAVU from the film
KAVIYATHALAIVI was fabulous.

In fact sometime back, I watched this movie on DVD and I was so fascinated by the whole movie, screen play, acting, direction,
and ofcourse songs & background score of our Master. Immediately I made a posting about the movie in our site, after midnight.
The hangover was there in me for many days.

MSV creates such a dent in you in every movie, and it is all the more true in Kaviyathalaivi.

The song lyrics, situation, sowkar's expressions, MSV's tunes and
orchestration - Oh god - memorable for ever.

Pl continue your mission as ever.

Ramki

Thanks to you all. The highlight of the song IMHO is the emotional voice of P.Susheela Amma who must have sung without a break for 2 characters with different emotions ! In a flash, she transforms herself to be a Mother and that outburst of an aggrieved Mom unable to see her daughter ..thats somewhat unique and special .....and thanks to Mellisai Mannar for having extracted the best output from PS. One can hear some Santoor too ....Well MSV's choice of instrument was always unique ...IMpossible to read his mind ......

That was a great posting for one of the greatest song as usual dear Balaji, and for that, lovely replies from others... ini naan enna solla...

When I was going thru this posting, "Maalai pozhuthin" came to my mind. Appadiye padichutu pogumbothu, Mr.Vatsan was mentioning abt. this song. wow... what a coincidence...

Some more classics in the combo of MSV - Sowcar:
Athanin muthangal
Paartha gnabagam
Thannanthanimayile
Neerodum vaigayile

But this song - Orunaal iravu... undoubtedly one of the greatest song in film music...
The entire orchestration particularly Violin, Flute, Shenai, Mridangam along with Suseela's voice... sollikite pogalam...

குங்குமம் இருந்தது நெற்றியிலே சிறு
குழப்பம் மிதந்தது கண்களிலே
and
வானத்தில் இருந்தே பாடுகிறேன் எந்த
வழியிலும் உன்னை தேடுகிறேன்
After these two lines oru beautiful flute varum... and interludes la vara Shenai (I think so), violin aaha... kettukite irukalam...

Malligai en mannan - post-la oruthar ezhuthiyirunthar ippadi:
"Intha paadal padarathukaagave VJ pirantharo" endru...

The same is applicable here also.
Orunaal iravu pagal pol... padarathukaagave PS piranthangalo ennavo... Very Happy

When we talk about heroines only very few songs come to our mind.
Sowcar: Orunaal, Maalai pozhuthin
KRV: Malligai en mannan
Srividhya: Ezhu swarangalukkul
Vanisri: Naalai intha velai

Our legend rules everywhere... verenna solla...

பின் குறிப்பு: While drafting this post, intha subject song-a 5 times kettachu... Smile
