KAADHALIKKA NERAMILLAI - II

DEAR FRIENDS,
What makes K N so very unique is its utter simplicity in dialogues while in all domains of movie-making it was a sparkle of class all over.
Till such time the movie had hit the screen , there was just no publicity , leave alone the hype that is now associated with even substandard movies. Those days the biggest publicity was through big banner[s] on Mount road , Madras. Much significance was attached to the hefty banner on Mt. Road, as often it worked to the advantage of the movie concerned.
Very rarely does one come across a genuine appreciation ' instant hit'. The song 'ENNA PAARVAI' turned out to be an instant hit. With conviction I am able to say this because, my first ever view of the movie was in Mysore in a crowd of mixed audience [Tamils and non-Tamils with the latter in larger number] where the entire auditorium got mesmerized by the rich tune and embellishments. This was a brilliant strategy to open a movie without hobnobbing with unwanted sketchy dialogue. Undoubtedly, song placement at the very opening of the movie was a well -conceived trick to grip the audience. Rather the MDs -V R had laid a mesmerizing net from which none could ever get out. Using of this captivating number should not be taken for granted as a straight forward way to succeed. The focus was brilliantly achieved by presenting the northern stretch of Marina with the Bay of Bengal and the buildings of the University of Madras forming the two extremities of the shots on this song sequence. Though the earliest in Colour , this facet of Marina has not been presented any better by any subsequent work. Dance master Thangappan deserves special appreciation for getting the best out of Kanchana's potential for dancing in this very first movie of hers. There is literal clash between all technicians, make-up men, Cinematographers, lyricist, MDs, Choreographer, lighting assistants , actors and the Director for establishing their supremacy in the very opening shot of this grand movie. But , the title card makers and the BGM for the titles [V R] had drawn attention by the artistic sketches [silently suggesting the hilarity element] matched by swiftly changing ludes that enhance the movie-viewing pleasure. The last of the cards keeps the frozen sketches of the laterally angled hero Muthuraman and the frontally positioned fiance. When the titles are over, the still images of the 2 stay and slowly come as live images whereupon the heroine jerkingly advances to the hero in steps that match the elegance of the orchestration. What a way to open a movie! At once the entire audience get drawn to the spectacle of the brimming youth in that romantic setting. KJ Jesudoss had a good opening from this song. From this very song, one could see the wizardy of Vincent- Sundaram , who have etched their skill in every frame till the movie ends. I shall highlight all such instances at the apt places as we progress in to the other realms of this movie.
