Some more interesting tidbits involving MSV:

1. In an interview, MSV was asked which songs composed by other MDs, including TKRamamoorthy, he had enjoyed as a rasigar. He singled out "Podhumo Indha Idam" (from Naan - TKR), "Mannavan Vanthanadi" (Thiruvarutselvar - KVM) and "Kadhodu Thaan Naan Paaduven" (Velli Vizha - V.Kumar)

2. The original lyrics of "Naan Aanaiyittal" (from Enga Veetu Pillai) as written by Vaallee were "Naan Arasan Enral, Enadh Aatchi Enral". But there was a Censor Board member called Mr Sastry who objected to these two lines (he was a "Simhasopanam" for Tamil filmmakers those days!). So Vaallee changed the lines to "Naan Aanaiyittal, Adhu Nadandhuvittal".

3. The favourite and also "rasiyana" spot for Kannadasan and MSV-TKR for their song compositions in the 1960s used to be Cottage No. 7 in Woodlands Hotel, Bangalore. All the songs of Karnan, Padhakaanikkai, En Kadamai, Idhu Sathyam, etc, were born here. They used to take a long walk from Woodlands Hotel to Victoria Hotel, a distance of about 3-4 kms, late in the evening, walking with dhoti, shirt and towel tied around their heads. Victoria Hotel's bar used to be Kaviarasar's favourite "wateringhole"! We can assume that many of the hit songs from these movies were created during these long walks.

4. Producer-Director Natesan took Kannadasan and the Mellisai Mannargal to Woodlands Hotel (Bangalore), booked them in for three to four days, and told them not to budge out of their rooms until all the songs for his next movie, En Kadamai, were ready. In a matter of two to three hours on day one, they announced that all the songs were ready! This enraged Natesan, who shouted at MSV: "Indha manushan than ethaidyo ollararan, neeyum athukku poy tune podarae". Just to satisfy Natesan, MSV and Kannadasan fooled around with the harmonium for two days more, but finally retained only the songs created in the first few hours of the first day!

5. Producer Velumani asked Vaallee at a song recording to suggest a short, catchy title for his movie about fisherfolk. Immediately, Vaallee came up with "Padagotti".

6. A recording studio had been booked for one song in Karuppu Panam. All the musicians, assistants, and the singer (LREaswari) had assembled. MSV came in, and asked for the lyrics. Only then it was realized that Kannadasan had not completed the lyrics for the song - he had suggested only the first two lines several days before, leaving the song to be completed later. Immediately, Kannadasan, who was not in Madras at that time, was contacted by phone and the situation was explained to him. Not in the least perturbed, Kaviarasar then dictated the entire song over the phone! The song? "Kaiyile panam irundhal..." by LRE.

Dear Mr. Srinivasan,

It was so nice of you to share these info.
Really interesting details... especially to imagine the situation
you have mentioned as #3, with the trio walking in B'lore streets,
giving birth to so many immortal songs.

I was reminded of a similar situation as to how one of the 'new' songs
was born...(as said in one of the TV programs) looks like the director and the lyricist were walking in the Marina beach at Chennai thinking about an apt first line for the song...somebody in the beach had said 'கையை வெச்சுகிட்டு சும்மா இருக்க மாட்டே?'...

This had inspired them and the song 'டேய் ..கையை வெச்சிட்டு சும்மா இருடா...' was born. Crying or Very sad

God Bless TFM!!
