I have been travelling during the past 3 days and I always carry my iPod to listen to MSV during all my travel.

Two days back as I was travelling in a car alone from Simla to Delhi
and the next day from Delhi to Alwar and back, again alone in a car
the songs I listened to were great. Though I had listened to these songs
many times in the past, I would say many of them took me to a different world. Some of the songs I got mesmerised are :

'Thithome thithome endru aadinaal " - VJ from Kuppathu raja
"Thangamagal vayitril pinju magan uruvam" - from Vazkaipadagu by PS and group
"Thulliyodum kaalgal inge" from Periyaidathupenn by TMS PS
Title music of Motor sundarm pillai, Panjavarnakkili, Nizal nijamahirathu
,Utharavindri ulle vaa.
'Vasanthathil oru naal' by PS in Moondru Deivangal
and so on and so on .................

Two songs which I heard atleast 10 times each, as I was flying from
Delhi to Chennai in the elite atomosphere of Business class of JetAirways, are

"VELLAI KAMALATHILE AVAL VEETRIRUPPAL PUKAZ ETRIRUPPAAL"
by Soolamangalam from GowriKalyanam.

What a song !! The song take off with Veena - Oh god - I remember Vatsan started posting about this song and the veena delivery of MSV
at an odd hour like 2 am from US after listening to his number. ( pl read vatsan's posting in some other page of the site - wherein he had conveyed so clearly the level of divinity which he felt - I too felt the same way today ) I will write about this song separately, but I am going to write about VETKAMILLAI NAANAMILLAI from Server sundaram.

Sorry for the prelude I have given above before my writing about this song, but I could not help. ( Otherwise there won't be any opportunity for me to express my feeling listening to these different songs !)

Now over to the subject song :

I listened to this number after a long time and I could realise only now the the beauty of the song and the way MSV has conceived, orchestered and presented.

The song starts with a grand orchestration with a wonderful brass section, flute, violin flow which will simply take you to a different world I tell you !

சுசீலா தொடங்குவார் :

வெட்கமில்லை நாணமில்லை காலமில்லை நேரமில்லையே ஒ ஓ
நினைத்தேன் முடித்தேன் அத்னால் சிரித்தேன்
நினைத்தேன் முடித்தேன் அதனால் சிரித்தேன்

Then comes a flute and a beautiful flow of Accordian ! ( It is only MSV who gave Accordian a place in Tamil Film, never before and never after by any one )

A violin section will take the chain from accordian and handover to
Suseela to start the Charanam.

Here comes MSV's surprise .

Charanam with no percussion but MELODY and ONLY MELODY.
An absolute deviation of the convention of songs - ie generally pallavi with be slow with only melody or light rythms and charanams will have a good percussion - Table, Doluk, Mridangam, Thumba etc )

Suseela starts charanam as :

No thaalam, percussion but ONLY BRASS SECTION SUPPORTING THE MELODY !!

What an imagination ! Crossing boundaries of பாடல் இலக்கணங்கள் !! AMAZING !!

அடுத்த ப்ளைட்டுக்கு இருந்த 4 மணி நேர இடைவெளியில்,
lounge ல் அமர்ந்து, ஐப்பாடில் பாடலைக் கேட்டு கேட்டு இந்த
விமர்சனம் எழுதுகிறேன்.

என்ன ஒரு ஆத்ம திருப்தி !

என்னைச்சுற்றி அமர்ந்து பலவகை உணவுகளை வெட்டிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் பலதரப்பட்ட மனிதர்களைப்பார்த்து
என் மனம் கூவுகிறது :

" டேய், இதையெல்லாம் கேளுங்கடா .. "
( வெங்கட், உனக்கு ஏற்பட்ட அதே அதே அனுபவம்தான் !!)

Dear Mr.Ramki,

This song is from the musical classic "Anbe Vaa". All the songs in this movie were by Vaali.
Anbe Vaa is one of the greatest musical bonanza by our one and the only mellisai mannar.
Not only the songs but also the re-recording of the movie will be great...

Ramki avargaLE.....'En ninaivu padithhineer athai...antha veena flourish'. When MSV's composing psyche touches an instrument, the instrument starts oozing expressions. Who could have even thought of that kind of a prelude for that song ?!!? That Veena piece alone can transport you to a wordless space, a feeling that can only be experienced and not at all expressed through these limited words. How does MSV manage to bring out phrases which do not have an iota of tentativeness, there is a sense of finality, a sense of conclusiveness, a clear indication of the fact that the composer was NOT 'fishing' for notes...or cleverly constructing the phrases. It all blossomed.

'Vetkamillai' is a wonder of a song and as you rightly pointed out, trombone plays the counter melody. Nobody has used all 'unusable' instruments (for countermelody) such as Veena and trombone. 'veeNai pEsum' has lovely, delectable Veena counter melody and what a seamless fusion between Veena and the Piano !!!! Coming back to the PS song, is an orchestral marvel, the other marvel being 'Eh nAdOdi', rather all songs in anbE vA, but esp the above two. What a tuneful pallavi for a 'frivolous' pallavi. Here is another definition of what a great melody can be. Any other composer for such a song would have depended totally on the orchestration to bring about the feel, but MSV, no......, his melodies (even this melody) do not require even a dholak, tabla for support.

'வெட்கமில்லை நாணமில்லை'....... ஒரு நல்ல பாடலை தேர்ந்தெடுத்து அழகாக எழுதி இருக்கிறீர்கள் ராம்கி.

நீங்கள் நினைப்பது போல நானும் எப்பொழுதும் நினைப்பதுண்டு. மெல்லிசை மன்னரின் பாடலை ரசிக்காதவர்களை பார்த்து 'எப்படி இவர்களால் இந்த பாடல்களை ரசிக்காமல் இருக்க முடிகிறது என்று வியப்பதுண்டு'. மெல்லிசை மன்னரின் பாடலை கேட்காமல் என்னுடைய எந்த ஒரு நாளும் முடிவடையாது.
