A Handful of Piano Picks - Part 9

Jazz Piano

Dear Ram

We discussed this over phone yesterday and you promptly posted your analysis sitting till early hours (3.30 am).

Hats off to your unique style of Tamil writing and great analysis on a peerless number of MSV-TKR.

After talking to you on phone, myself and amma listened to this song a few times yesterday late night in my iPod. Amazing composition of Mellisai mannargal way ahead of time, as you have rightly said.

Dear Mr. Ram and Ramki,
Both of you share enormous ability to appreciate each of MMs nuances. As I used to lament "varaa vaendum" of Kalaikovil was decades ahead and therefore suffered by its precocious trend. One more point to ponder over as to how the MMs of a remote South Indian origin and upbringing could right away have composed such a number full of emotion, romantic-pathos , voice modulation and artistic orchestration when Tamil culture had not even known the names of these instruments. It looks comfortable to concede that MMs had divine grace in abundance , lest it should not have been possible to bringforth this scale of elegance in a very strange pattern. The lone solace is MMs together and in isolation too went all out to establish a variety of approaches not given to many. Thank you for this opportunity.
Warm Regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai

Dear Ram,

If your earlier post on Qawwali theme was informative, this goes one step further ! Very Happy
Hence I am surrendering THALA ( Ultimate Star Ajit ) title to you mate ! Smile You really rock here !
Earlier , our professor Raman had wrote in detail about this song in another thread. Jass must be another Western concept which the Master must have introduced in tamil cinema. ( not sure whether a portion of Yaaradi nee mohini falls in this league , G.Ramanathan composed )

I love the special drumming work in this song . Amazing work... LRE would have been a spontaneous choice for this song.

Are you aware, there is another mind blowing work in the same Kalai kovil .... Mullil roja .by LRE and PBS . I am unable to decipher the works of MSV-TKR because the same movie also has that classical Thangaradham vandhadhu !

I wont blame them because the movie failed at box office . Unless the AIR had aired it regularly, ( which was the only other medium those days ), the audience wouldnt have a chance to know about this song. Hence pls spare them .
To my knowledge, Naan unnai serndha selvam ( a song well covered by Professor ) and thangaradham vandhadhu were regular in AIR for sure.

I cant wait for your next post. Make it faster pls Smile

Cheers

Dear friends,
Sorry for intruding into an older thread and probably disturb its original intention...I was recently listening to this Mukesh's song "Woh tera pyar ka gham..", a song from the Hindi film 'My Love'. There were lots of striking similarities in many sections of this brilliant jazz number. Especially the sax pieces and some piano ones are completely based on MM's masterly composition. Some unheard of music director called Daan Singh seems to have composed music for this Shashi Kapoor film, about 6 or 7 years after the release of Kalai Koil. The orchestration (violins) reproduces some of these sections cleverly masking the lifting of the tune.
Just one more instance of 'inspiration' derived by 'others' from our MM!
Thanks,
Sai Saravanan

Dear Mr.Balaji,
It is not as if ''Kalai koil '' numbers had to meet their eclipse as the movie failed at the box office. Despite movie's 'failure' all songs were widely well received except of course ''vara vendum''. It was beyond interpretations then. Even 'nALAM nALAm' of KN had to wait for its time.
In my humble opinion AIR did not deserve any merit as they were averse to cine songs. Much ground work for song popularity was by Radio Ceylon that later was rechristened 'Ilangai oliparappu koottuththapana varthaga sevai'. Honestly, all 'kalai koil' songs were regularly played by them. In fact it was their effort that kept us enthralled. Therefore any defence of local media is just out of place, as they had bizarre views about the very medium cinema.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai.

Dear Friends,
I recall a posting about the incident of this songs composition. It seems that Director Sridhar was not approving the tune as he felt it is too much of jazz flavor for the Tamil Audience. But MSV being the producer wanted it to be the same and the producer prevailed over the director. It was MSV's passion for music as a whole that drove him to do such melody. Even for this situation if he is not coming out with the nativity of the situation where else could he have done it?

A very few of the audience were the luckiest to have enjoyed at the contemporary time.

Halo MSV fans,

I am back after a long time. The list of piano related compositions contains
some of the best tamil songs composed using this wonderful instrument.

PADUVOUR from the film KANNAN EN KADHALAN was missing in the list .
In this song the dual of Tabla beat and the piano enchanting sound
mesmarise the listeners. Normally music directors use either a congo drum
or drums for the rhythm but MSV has pitched in tabla a rare combination
and the result endless melody.

Khayam, OP Nayar and Shankar jaikishan have used piano exhaustively in their compositions but our Master of Music variety outscores others. That is what MSV is all about.
