“ADHISAYA ULAGAM” (GOWRAVAM)

It is a typical L.R.Eswari song. That means others will struggle to sing this kind of songs, except few. It is one among the songs, for which Mellisai Mannar poured heavy music with more number of instruments.

The list is too lengthy, in which the following songs also included:

"KangaLai kondu vaa" by LRE (Raja)
"Pennendraal naanandrO" by LRE (enna mudhalaali sowkiyamaa)
‘MinminipoochigaL kangaLil thenbadum’ by LRE (Bharatha Vilas)
"Indru vandha indha mayakkam" by Suseela (KaasEthaan kadavuladaa)
"Kudikaaran pEchchu" by LRE (Nam Naadu)

The one I want to mention specially is
"ADHISAYA ULAGAM... RAGASIYA IDHAYAM" from 'Gowravam'

definitely it is a wonderful composing even the great creator cant remember now. (As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I am great angry on this
'Music Legend', why he is not mentioning about these type of songs in his interviews, so that at least present generation can come to know some drops of his achievements).

Can you imagine the starting of this song?, with the heavy drums and trumpets... "ta....ta....ta....ta....ta... ta... daaaannnng". Then with bangoes, trumpets and flutes like a heavy rain and the prelude ends with Accordian solo.

Then start the song with husky voice of L.R.Eswari

"adhisaya ulagam... ragasiya idhayam
azhagiya uruvam... iLagiya paruvam"

up to this MSV used bangoes, but when the line starts

"pennulagu.. naan unnai azhaippEn
ponnulagam en kannil tharuvEn"
he will use 'thavil'

again when the pallavi starts

"sandhikkalaam.. manadhaal ninaivaal uravaal
mudhikkondaal tharalaam peralaam uravaal
paLingu kinnam ondru madhuvai aLLithandhaal
parugidalaam piragu enna thadhingidathOm’

he will use again bangoes.

Again ‘thavil’ in anupallavi
“pennulagu…. naan unnai azhaiththEn”

Throughout the song MSV poured heavy music with all instruments like Accordian, Trumphet, Saxophone, Bangoes, Thavil, drums... and what not.

This song is a grand musical treat for cine music lovers.

(Actress Jaikumari danced well for this song, where Senior Shivaji (Barristor Rajinikanth) shows some movements by sitting in the chair itself).

Lengthy Bit...

Well said Saradha Madam!

I always like singing the saranam, "oru naal iravu". I cant explain; it gives great feeling while one sings that saranam. Superb composition: I dont think that saranam will fit in any carnatic grammer, but Our master has blended the lyrics in such a beautiful manner.

SONGS OF THE MOVIE "RAJA"

Movie produced by K.Balaji and starred by Shivaji Ganesan & Jayalalitha.

Music by 'Mellisai Mannar' M.S.Viswanatahn and all lyrics written by Kannadasan.

Regarding the songs, I surprised why the songa of Raja are NOT well popularised ouside the movie, infact they are good ones.

Nee varavEndum endru ethir pArththEn
varum vazhi thOrum undahn mugan pArththEn
kAlam kadandhAl enna Raja
kAthal kavidhai sollu Raja[
/b]

Jayalalitha, who was followed by the police from the Railway station, acting as the lover of Shivaji, who is standing on the top of a wall. Kannadasan's lines are beautiful in charanam also.

The interlude will start with trumpet.....

konja nEram ennai thAlAttu
konjumbOthum ennai pArAttu
inbaththai iruvarum kondu varuvOm
koLLaiyil iruvarum pangu peruvOm
kAthalai inaippathu jAthagamE
kAlamum namakkini sAthagamE
un manamum gunamum nAdagam
um madiyinil nAn oru kuzandhai kuzandhai

It will be enjoyable to watch NT's 'sEshtaigaL' with Jayalalitha in this song "nee vara vEndum ena edhir pArththEn'. In one stage, NT will touch her cheeks and JJ will push out his hands. NT, showing the policemen around them (like saying"ellorum pArkkirAnga pAr"). Then JJ will take his hand and rub with her cheek. Camera will show the jealous Inspector ('Shanthi' Kumar) in close-up.

The next song "kalyAna ponnu kadaippakam pOnAl" when we heared at the first time, it was something irritating "why MSV should not think some better tune for this song?'. Yes it did not steal our hearts. But picturisation is somewhat good, in Kerala locations and in a boat. NT's steps when starting the song is nice and his action with hands in his hips for the line "nEril vandha RathiyO mathiyO". But we should accept the fact that, this song did not attain the the level of original Hindi song "Nafrathkar-nE-vA-lOngE" of Johny mera nAm.

The third song, for Padhma Kanna from Mumbai, not only in dance but she acted in an important role also in 'Raja' as a pair of Randhava. This is one of the bests of L.R.Eswari, start with humming

"raaa...ra..ra..ra..ra.ra..raaaaaa"

"nAn uyirukku tharuvathu vilai
en udalini unakkoru kalai
kangaLai kondu vA... penmaiyai kAnavA
mangaiyil thangam nAn
madhuvinum bOdhai naaa..aa..aa..aa..n

(especially 'kangaLai kondu vA' with her specialised husky voice)

the orchestration will be somewhat terrific and MSV poured the instruments like anything. Very heavy instrumental experience. No dabala, no bangoes, but fully drums, with Guitars, Violins, Truphet, Saxophone... and what not. MSV stands with his viswaroopam in this composission. But the very sad thing is, this song was also kept under shadow. WHY.....?????. We dont know.

Next song, by PS for Jayalalitha in the Krishnan temple, when looting the jewells. The song will start with the chorus

GangaiyilE OdamillaiyO en kannan kaigaLil nAn vara,
enni vandha sEthi solla ...
hare hare krishna...hare
hare hare krishna...hare

then PS starts the charanam:

Krishnaaaa...krishnaaaaaa...krishna....
dheepangaL kOyililE minnuvathenna
avai pAvangaL kOdAthendru solluvathenna
vairangaL nenjinilE Aduvathenna
avai vanjangaL vEndAmendru pAduvathenna

The last song,
Irandil ondru.. nee ennidam sollu
ennai vittu vEru yAru unnai thoduvAr
by SPB.

In fact it is his second for NT, after 'pottu vaiththa mugamO' in Sumathi En Sundhari.
