Another Masterpiece!!! Amidst the competition.. The new waves seem to take over the cinema industry, but MASTER is still the MASTER!!! Just one song, and you will realize, it is of no surprise this man is one of the base pillars of the Tamil Cine Music (KalThoon!!!!), and can tie you with his musical charm, Indrum Endrum...
This song turns out to be a turning point in the movie, where the hero discovers the real culprit behind the guy's death, whose role he is then enacting in the society and family, to fool the enemies. I think the movie is a hindi remake acted by Dharmendra (I remember watching an action sequence from that hindi movie, where the hero ties one of his leg to fight his opponent who is physically challenged. In Tamil, it is Sivaji and Prabhu, debut for Ilaya Thilagam. Was it the movie or only the action sequence remade ? Please clarify me because it would help us to look out for the corresponding Hindi song, if there is any.)
The song is a New Year Eve extravaganza, hero singing in the party. Though the song is a dance number, Shivaji would be just walking aroud the party just waving his hips, and the dance floor filled by crowd. TMS announces again, none except him would match Nadigar Thilagam better at such circumstances, with his "Garjanai".
Looking upon the song, Mellisai Mannar grabs our attention the very instant of the opening with the array of instruments (Anyone please clarify me, what all used here in the opening? Thanks ),followed by the enthusiastic drum beats. The array repeats again, but this time the finishing touch is given by bongos. Thats the speciality of our MD, Expect the Unexpected!!! Then, Guitar and Trumpet takes the lead, forming a wonderful combination, followed by the chorus "la la la la laa... Happy New Year", trumpet enveloping at the end, with the TMS starting to sing. The combination here is so perfect that singer gets into the tempo himself with the opening, and works hard to maintain it. TMS is a master at this art. The chorus keeps continuing at the end of every lyric, with the drums and bongos at the back, keeping our foot moving all the time.
The following interlude begins with the guitar bit, that seems to takes us down few steps, where it is joined by claps and "hey"s, making us feel the "party" moment. The guitar continues its flow, then taken by the trumpet, finished by the bongos and accordion.
The first charanam is a New Year blessing, happiness and joy to fill everyone's heart. Voice of TMS rings around and raises up in the end, "Pirandhu Sirandhu Valarndhu Vaazhgave"
The piano bit marks the beginning of the second interlude, followed by violins, building up the pace slowly, and there!!!! The hero watches the revolving "LION" and realises the truth, the final piece of puzzle coming in place, marked by the music getting high and stops. Silence filling the place, audience realising the impact of it. The piano bit starts again, absolutely mesmerizing, more than it was played at the beginning of the interlude. That tells us the power of silence. Nothing else could create this stronger impact. The route to the charanam is again taken by bongos and accordion.
The second charanam comes in words as the hero's realization
"Kaatil oruvan MAARAA enraan
Kaatril vanthathu RAAMAA enru
Serum thunbangal varugaiyile
Thiruppi podungal Vaazhkaiyile"
And the round is over, the song pacing up to the end with drums and guitar, the mastery of the composer shining in every minute framework.
PS :- Any mistakes/suggestions if found while mentioning about the instruments/notes mentioned above, please do let me know. It would be very helpful to improve for a newbie like me.
Thanks and Regards,
Sriram.

Splendid start Sriram K ! Welcome. Pls.
This song was well received at the time of release & the movie ran reasonably well giving a good start to Prabhu.
MSV rulez with Synthesizer , drums , bangoos , trumphets . It’s a sizzling number appears at a sensitive stage of the movie .
TMS , despite his advancing age, did very well . Nobody can challenge TMS for Nadigar Thilagam .
The drums thunder after the charanam . Superb closing of the ludes .
That one legged fight sequence you have mentioned reminds me of MGR’s Adimai penn introduction scene wherein he fights with Asokan . |
