Dear Friends,
In TFM, the era of MSV was unique for various things. One can keep on lavishly revelling in high profile nostalgia weaving itself in the feeling of elegance all over. In doing so, MSV had a tight rope walk having to keep on making better items to every Producer-Director combination. More than this, he had to keep absolute balance between the polar factors SIVAJI GANESAN and M G RAMACHANDRAN who would not accept anything a shade less than what was done for the other. UNLESS THE MD IS ABSOLUTELY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND INNOVATIVE, THE RISK OF BEING SIDELINED BY ONE OF THE POLAR FACTORS WAS JUST IMMINENT. That MSV did not suffer a scratch for over 30 years keeping cordiality with people and Melodious harmony in all his pieces is an unquestionable testimony to his calibre. [We are not discussing the other commitments to Sridhar, AVM , Madhavan, KSG, GN Velumani, SSVasan and others among others].This prelude attempts to highlight the enormous pressure that MSV should have withstood, given the stature of the few names mentioned. Now to the main agenda - CONTRASTING ITEMS by way of 2 numbers for the 2 contemporary poles in TF industry.
THE TWO ITEMS DIFFER IN EVERY RESPECT EXCEPT IN BEING GRAND MELODIES. They are:
AMAIDHIYAANA NADHIYINILAE ODAM - Aandavan Kattalai and
ANDHA MAPILLAI KADHALICHHAN- Panam padaithavan . For brevity I shall refer to them as AK and PP numbers for some observations on their unity in diversity. The common elements for both are MSV, TMS and PS.
THEY DIFFER IN CONCEPT of high philosophy [AK] and ground reality of human emotions [PP]. They were respectively by KANNADASN [AK] and VALEE [PP]. But MSV has shown his hand in both, as the composer.
AS EVER, TMS and PS HAVE MADE THE RIGHT DISTINCTION IN VOICE TO REFLECT THE RESPECTIVE ARTISTES ON THE SCREEN. Now look at the other contrasts:
In AK song, the lead Singer is TMS for about half the item or so and only later PS STEPS IN. Once she has come in, the song reaches a different dimension and PS stays in an excellent echelon as a singer.
In PP song, PS begins the song and keeps the domain live and vibrant and only later TMS comes in where after it is his game of rich display.
Both the numbers have been brilliantly orchestrated in different styles by the varying the instruments , though flute is the general element in both. What I genuinely look at is, though of the genre of duets, the singers almost operate in isolation except for winding up. THE BEST EXAMPLE THAT SUITS COMPARISON IS THE RELAY RACE ! The first runner hast to set the trend in full blast before handing over the baton to the team mate for a grand finish. In both cases , MSV has brilliantly embellished the running by a finely decorated track albeit not repeating the styles between the 2 tracks. What an innovative composition? [ TMS um SUSHEELA VUM ORUVARAI ORUVAR ANAAYAASAMAGA THOOKKI SAPPIDUM AZHAGU SOLLI MAALADHU. AANAL 2 PAADALGALILUM PINNAL PAADA THODANGUBAVAR MUNDHIVITTADHAIPPOLA BRAMIKKA VAIPPAR , Nichayamaga ivai irandum oray MD in karpanaiyin uchha kattam. ] My analytical ability is limited and yet my appreciation is not.
Warm regards Prof. K.Raman Navi Mumbai.

Dear Professor Uncle,
That was really a good outcome of an amazing thought process.

I would also like to add my thoughts to this :

As everybody knows , Our Master never discriminated between artists and he himself says "I know only Matter ,Meter and Melody !!! "

We asked him the same question once as how He was able to strike a beautiful balance between two Giants like NT and MT , he clearly explained - "We never scored Music for Sivaji or MGR. We just scored music for the characters ,situation and the emotion that the director explained us.....". This is also evident in his varied compositions wherein He has given Huge hits to every Hero of the yesteryear. Jaishankar,Muthuraman,Ravichandran,AVM Rajan and M.K.Muthu.

MSV Rules !!!
Venkat

Professorji...

Another example for the same situation you mentioned here... is....

"PONNEZHIL POOTHTHADHU PUTHU VAANIL
VENPANI THOOVUM NILAVE NIL" from Kalangarai Vilakkam written by Panju Arunachalam.

TMS will start the song, and in the second half PS will join and carry the song on her shoulder. But when PS starts..

"PONNEZHIL POOTHTHADHU THALAIVA VAA" the interlude will turn to fast beat with violin and flute, and again come to normal with acordian
.

Dear Prof :

This is a wonderful comparison of songs. Master's beauty is the ability to handle a raga or a scale to emote completely different moods and situations and in this case , presumably, it happens to be HariKhamboji scale.(which is extremely native to the Mellisai Mannar)

Warm Regards
Jeyaram G
