Dear Sri Ragavendran,
When we talk about voice modulation, I recall what Thumba Sekar said during our interaction with him last month. He said, "There is a popular perception that YMS' voice modulation changes to reflect the voice of MGR or Sivaji. The credit for this should really go to MSV. It is the distinction MM makes while composing for Sivaji and MGR that gets reflected in TMS' voice." I think there is some truth in this. But this does not in any way belittles the prowess of TMS.
Perhaps MSV has a role in TMS's voice matching that of Jayashankar in this 'Edhir Kaalam' song.
You are doing an excellent service by digging out the gems and presenting them to the group. I find that several of my favorite songs (which are not very popular) are in the list. I will particularly mention Thedi thedi Kaththirunthen (an extraordinarily brilliant composition - I listen to this at least twice every day and the charm has not waned a bit for me!), Moham muppadhu naal and Naan Paadumpaattile. You have appropriately described 'naan paadum paattile' as 'lullaby defined.' MSV's lullabies are all a class of their own - each excelling in its own way. He has also composed the music for a lullaby for Kannadasan written by Vaali. This was performed in the Kannadasan Viswanathan Arakkattalai annual function in 2007. Very appropriate. _________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)
