Dear friends,
Yesterday, [after decades ] I had a DVD on THE GRAND OLD MOVIE' NENJAM MARAPPADHILLAI'. As the first title card opens out, we see the play of MSV- TKR. Not much percussion is used, but a gripping play of chords has been brilliantly adopted. As more or less the 'logo', the song note
'Nenjam marappadhillai' is played. The progression is just fantastic in the sense, at places, solo violin / viola? is played to a very heavy base note and the variations of volume to back-up the title card has been so very aesthetically done. Almost through the title only this song is played , after CVSridar's narration of the incidents in different parts of India , when cases of recalling the previous birth were narrated on a blank dark screen, before the title cards open. The impact from the title music is so influential on the listener that [s]he has to obediently tow the line of the movie. Some one thorough with the ragas and the items of instrumental details would have very good material to analyse, though the title is just a brief piece.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman

Dear Professor,
A short and sweet introduction to this thriller movie...
Also the re-recording add class to the movie...
Some years back, in an interview Sridhar told that it took almost 6 months for MSV to compose that catchy "Nenjam Marappadhillai".
Inorder to satisfy the director, no matter whatever time it takes, MSV will do justification to his music.
இது தொழில் மீது அவர் வைத்திருக்கும் பக்தியை காட்டுகிறது. _________________ Meendum Santhippom Viraivil...

Dear Mr.Venkat,
Your recalling on CVS's interview about NM song has a lot of message. What are they?
MSV does not take a minute more than essential. But, for NM song he took about 3 months to settle on a tune that has 'no before' or 'no after' kind of emotive association to the lyric. Actually it was CVS who wanted a very different kind of composition and made MSV precisely work on that.
A man who takes unusually longer time will be tolerated only if they[movie makers] are convinced of some superb product. CVS knows it too well and how often CVS has received bundles of song bonanzas for even movies that he did not produce though he just directed them . So, CVS made the apt use of MSV.
Was it not a fact that the very euphoria about the movie arose from the way the 'title' song was composed? Let us look at the point.
There have been thrillers in Tamil mostly re-made from Hindi hits and invariably their songs were mere tune reproductions for which lyrics were built. Too often Kannadasan - PS efforts have helped those situations though a few others too contributed. The issue in NM was very different since all the arrangements were first timeefforts. Yet the impact created by MSV-TKR in songs /BGM have simply outclassed every other similar effort in Indian cinema. The period of gestation is justifiable as it is a case of 'END JUSTIFYING THE MEANS'.
Certainly the then TF industry had the best talent in every domain , lest should we be talking of a novie after 45 years?
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman

Dear Prof,
It was some 15 years back (may be early 1990s).
There was a 13 episode (once a week. it went for 13 weeks) serial of 30 minutes in Madras DD. The name of the serial is "Thirayum Isayum".
It was a very good serial.
It the msvtimes core crew can approach Madras DD to get a copy of these episodes it will be very nice.
Or it could be a normal interview with CVS in DD.
I don't remember exactly.
In that he told about this song composing.
They waited for almost 6 months for getting this tune - humming.
CVS also wrote a series in Kalki. I think its "Thirumbi paarkiren".
அதில் அவர் இவ்வாறு கூறுவார்:
"Aduthu indha padam direct pannalamnu irunthen. Indha padathukkum isai vazhakkam pola ennoda favourite MD MSV dhan."
திரு.ராம்கி அவர்கள் மெல்லிசை மன்னரிடம் இது பற்றி கேட்டுப்பார்க்கலாம். _________________ Meendum Santhippom Viraivil...

Some tips from the episode "Thirayum Isayum":
Balamuralikrishna - about the song Thanga Radham vandhadhu...He mentioned MSV as Sangeetham engira Viswathukku Nathan.
At first, he composed some other tune for this song. That was not worked out. Then BMK- kuralukku yetramadhiri gambhiramaga irukkavendum enbatharkaaga intha tune-i (naam kettu rasthukkondirukum) compose panninaraam.
Chitralaya Gopu - For the song "Enna enna vaarthaigalo", MSV himself has played the piano... They shooted the shot in closeup of MSV playing piano for Sreekanth.
MSV himself -
He requested AVM for a piano to compose the song "Raajavin Paarvai Raaniyin Pakkam"
Veedu varai uravu - Asokan will cross a night club. Appo Trumpet-la oru note varum. The same note will be used by LRE as a humming lullaby in a village.
Kamalhasan - "Paalum Pazhamum Kaigalil Yenthi". Intha song muzhuvathum including charanam intha variyai konde paadalam.
(Paaditthan paarungalen... unarveergal)
Innum evlovo interesting things are there. I could not re-collect all of them suddenly...
But in my opinion, its worth having it in DVD. _________________ Meendum Santhippom Viraivil...

Another example for MSV's patience and dedication.
Some years back in Madras Vividh Bharathi, there was an interview of MSV. GKV and MSV were discussing.
MSV told about one incidence.
Within minutes he has composed many songs.
But for a MGR movie, SAAsokan was the producer (I think so).
MSV has composed lot of tunes. But MGR was not satisfied. Asokan will come back to MSV and tell like this "Annanukku intha tune-um pidikalayam anne..."
Finally a tune satisfied MGR. It took almost 100 days. (At this point of time GKV interupted MSV and told... "Oru naalaikku 100 tune podaravarache neenga... eppadi oru tune-ukku 100 naal eduthikiteenga...)
And that song was "Nee ennenna sonnalum kavithai unai engengu thottalum inimai..." from the movie "Netru Indru Naalai". _________________ Meendum Santhippom Viraivil...

hi
recently i read a tit bit , ofcourse without mentioning the song .
after the song was okayed , MSV apparently asked MGR , why he didnot t like the earlier tunes
MGR's reply was - all tunes were great , but , i didnot have time for the call sheet , ashokan asked fr . thats why .
MSV 's reaction apparently ' ADA PAAVI ' _________________ vijayakrishnan |
