Dear Friends
Under this category of rare songs, I feel the whole movie 'Hello Mr.Zamindar deserves a place of pride. All the songs were fantastic hits with Kannadasan's lyrics and V-R's brilliant compositions. I am nearly sure that it is almost a forgotten movie and even in specfic programmes devoted to old classics. A detailed inrteraction with MSV will bring out several interesting information from MM. Though all the songs are absolute gems , one number I pick for its totally unique conception by Kannadasan and certainly MMs have made it lively by the excellent orchestration for a simple tune. Certainly, I am constrained by lack of musical wit and I look for someone to do that facet of analysis. Let me narrate the situation.
SONG : Sondhamumillae Oru bandhamumillae
MDs : Viswanathan Ramamoorthy
Singer: G.K.Venkatesh
Movie : Hello Mr. Zamindar
Actors: M.R.Radha and a few men
Location : A hair-dressing Shop.
I rate this a real rare song for very rarely you see songs in that location inmovies thouh many persons keep humming their favourities while waiting for their turn with the hair dresser. This song is a very genuine sample that can vividly show the poet in Kannadasan. Using a hair -dressing shop KANNADASAN REVELS IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE while beginning from the ground reality. M.R.Radha has played the chief hair dresser and sings this number when his shop workers render the lines in chorus. Look at how Kannadasan has critically pointed out human behaviour. Unfortunately I do not remember the entire song but I can recall the crucial stanzas that highlight Kannadasan's skills to avail of a situation. Now read the lines.

GK V sings the song for M.R. Radha.

SONDHAMUMILLAE ORU BANDHAMUMILLAE
SONNA IDATHIL AMARNDHU KOLGIRAAR
NANGAL MANNARUMILLAE MANDHIRI ILLAE
VANAKKOM POTTU THALAYAI SAAIKKIRRAR.. [PALLAVI]

alater stanza goes thus:
IRUKKUM PODHU THAILAM POTTU AZHAGU PAARKKIRAR
IRANGI VITTAAL THIRUMBI PAARKKA VERUPPU KOLGIRAAR
avarae VERUPPU KOLGIRAAR [ Adecent reference to the hairs]
ULLA IDATHTHIL ULLA VARAIKKUM UNNAI MADHIKKUM
INDHA ULAGAM
IRANGI VITTAAL YAERI MIDHIKKUMAE [Philosophy of daily life]

VALARNDHU VITTAAL MANIDHARELLAM KURANGUGAL AAVAAR
NAANGAL MAZHITHU VITTAAL MARUPADIUM MANIDHARGAL AAVAAR
MINORAI ELLAM VETTI MUDIPPOM MATHTHAVARKELLAM
MOTTAI ADIPPOM, VAAZHNDHU KAATTUVOM ... .
What is amazing is the observation of exchanging a morning's wish with the hairdreser only when we visit his place and taking "that" place shown by him [ Sonna idaththil amarndhu kolgiraar] FALLING FROM PLACE makes anyone an item of low value is the message and the value of human life before and after a hairdressing addresses THE DIGNITY OF LABOUR. As for the music V-R havescored an excellent chorus with typical western ludes and interludes well embellished. Only by listening to this number one can feel the skill of brilliant composition for such a situation. I trust our friends would follow the thread.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai.

Dear Prof.K.Raman, It is one of my favorite songs also,as my best western collections of swing is that composer and clarinet player "Benny Goodman". MSV has done justice to swing and that too in a Tamil song ,which I can safely say nobody else is capable of handling, here as of now and probably never. Chakravarthy

Respected Professor
You have reminded us one of the rarest songs ever. A very nice song indeed with a neat picturisation and you have presented a vivid delineation of the same.

I remember watching this song in DD some 18 years ago (the first and the last time when I ever heard this song..... Very Happy). It was my mom who told me to observe the song for its amazing lyrics , NADIGAVEL's prodigious casual expression as a typical barber and ofcourse a catching tune. I also vaguely remember the sound of the SCISSORS being used along with the rhythm that appealed to me the most as a kid watching this song..... Smile

It is really sad to note that I had not listened to this song ever since then and I really would love to....

May I request Mr. RAGASUDA or any other rasika to upload and share this song (I would love to watch the video also...) Smile

The other good songs of this not-so-hit (Prof please confirm) movie are "ILAMAI KOLUVIRUKKUM..." and the most famous "KADHAL NILAVEY...KANMANI RADHA.." (what a song...) with Savithri and Gemini playing the lead role.

Nice song for this sluggish Wednesday morning !!! Very Happy

MSV RULES !!!

Friends,

My own personal favourite from Hello Mr Zamindar is "Ilamai Koluvirukkum" rendered by PBS. (There is also a version sung by P. Susheela). You know how there are some songs you have grown up with? Songs which make you pause, halt whatever you are doing, and which you must listen to completely before proceeding with your work? For me, this PB Srinivas beauty is one such masterpiece. I never, never tire of hearing this song. While I have this song on cassette as well as CD, I still feel a thrill whenever this song is played on the KL Radio channel of WorldSpace and make it a point to hear it fully.

Ilamai Koluvirukkum...
Both the versions start with PS and PBS humming.
But the beauty is both the humming will be different...
Another good thing about the song is there will be a beautiful BONGOS beat throughout the song of PBS.
But in PS, I think it is the TABLA which plays around...

Another great quality of MM.

Our MM has given lot of songs in two versions with entirely two diffrent BGMs.
for eg:
Sontham eppothum
En Kelvikkenna bathil
Aayiram kannukku virunthagum

Thats the greatness of MM MSV.
