A tribute to a great composer
R.SUDHARSANAM
During the peak period of MSV-TKR and MSV and amidst classical based melodies by "Mama" - K.V.Mahadevan - there was one composer who gave constant and consistent melodies, which had a totally different feel and freshness and a unique stamp of its own. The composer is none other than the Great R.Sudharsanam.
Undoubtedly the "Mellisai MannargaL" were ruling the Tamil Industry in terms of the volume of songs, sheer melodies, extravagant orchestrations - streching the limits of Indian Music to a different plane (or) horizon.
Yet R.Sudharsanam had his own quality and stamp in his songs and he had been careful and succeeded in managing to a much greater extent to avoid the influence of MSV-TKR in his Music.
Sudharsanam without a doubt has set a phenomenal style in Melody music - completely unique to himself!
The other great aspect that amazes me in this Legendary composer is his Variety. Generally musicians tend to get into a comfort zone after a while, but I feel Sudharsanam's songs always had the touch of "Novelty" in each of his compositions.
An interesting statistic - R.Sudharsanam has been a part of the beginning of two Legendary actors in Tamil Cinema.
Parasakthi - "Nadigar Thilagam" Sivaji Ganesan.
KaLathur Kannamma - "Ulaga Naayagan" Kamal Hassan.
Somehow from my childhood I always had an attraction to Sudharsanam's songs and personally he is definitely one of my top favourite Melody composers of the Golden Era !!
Here is the Tribute - a compilation of some outstanding and fabulous compositions of this Melody Legend.
1) Ammavum Neeye - KaLathur Kannamma
An all-time favourite devotional melody of many TFM fans. Also remembered as a history - first movie and song of Kamal Hassan. Beautiful Melody, nice chorus in charanams!!
Best part: Rendering of "Muruga, Muruga" has a great soul strring effect in this song!
Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAdqM3odYXw
2) KaLai Vayasu - Deiva Piravi
A soft melody with soft hummings - absolutely no gimmicks! Dholak usage at its best - subtle yet attracts.
Best Part: "Pollathathu.... Manam Pollathathu". Wow! Conveys a touch of sarcasm!
Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhW6k3bwpHQ
3) Azagiya Midhilai Nagariniley - Annai
For a long time I thought this was a MSV compo. A perfect duet, SUPERB Melody!

Prelude! The variation before starting of the pallavi
Second Charanam! PBS hummings after first line in Charanam II

4) Naan Oru MuttaLunga - Sagothari
A great Chandrababu Hit! A totally different type of song. Be it the lyrics (or) the song! A casual - yet soulful. Perfect tune for a road-side philosphy!
Best Part:
Chandrababu's Voice;
Interludes - The rhythm.
Has a slight feel of "Maand" ragam in some portions, other pls confirm. Great imagination.

Hi Ram,
I join you in saluting this great composer. I must admit that his songs do have a different timbre. Parasakthi, Deivapiravi and Pattananthil Boothama are some of my favourites. Andha Sivakami Maganidam Seithi Solladi in Pattanathil Bootham never ceases to amaze me.
Mr.Sudarsanam's brother - Govardhanam used to be an assistant with our Emperor.
Regards,
