A Handful of Piano Picks (17)

Ram, miga azhagAna write-up...mellisai mannarayE uruga cheyyum pAdal. TMS-in garjikkum kural eppadi mella varadavum seigirathu pArungaL. TMS, as usual sings from within the song, imbibing all its nuances. meeNdum pArungaL.....KD-yin santhakkavithai thAn charaNam. Yet you do not get the feeling that most of the lines have the same meter. MSV-yin harmonia-kkaigaLin aseervAtham antha santhangaLukku kidaithhathanAl namakku kEtpathu long winding phrases, major to minor and minor to major musically enriching each word the tune passes through. isai noolAl KD-yin muthhAna vArthaigaLai iNaithvar allavA MSV, except this time the pearl necklace was awarded to TMS alone Smile Even within the soft lilt the song brings about, there is this MSV vEgam a subtle vEgam in the first interlude......the composer's personality unfailingly comes through Smile Enjoyable and delectable !!!

Dear Mr.Ram,
Arpudhamana oru paadalukku arpudhamana varnanai.
One of my most favorites of MSV-TMS combo.

This movie has another great number with Piano in the main, Ellorum nalam vaazha naan paaduven...
A great song with lovely piano, violin, chorus etc.,

Terrific composition, it is different from the standard lullaby, Ram.
He decided to go for little bolder bgm & churned out an enchanting musical for a bed time routine.
Classical prowess's orchestration is deep. Fine lyrics.
Musical artistry & the vocal talent is second to none.

It’s an assemly of Violin, Piano and 3 Congo drums

The first time the Pallavi has Piano counter…when its repated, Violins replace !!

Excellent description Ram !

Dear Mr Ram,

Your beautiful analysis of Chellakilligalam evokes a sense of nostalgia and longing. What a song! Kallaiyum karaiyavaikkum padal enral adhu kandippaga indha padal thaan.

This is one of those songs which stay with you all your life, a song which you never tire of, how many ever times you listen to it.

I wonder how many of our fellow-MSV fans have listened to the Hindi version of this song, beautifully sung by Mohammed Rafi ("Main gaoon, tum so jao") for Brahmachari. That is also a very lilting song, tuned by Shankar Jaikishan, written by Shailendra, and fetched Rafi the Filmfare award for best playback singer that year (1967 or 1968).

Still, I would rate Chellakilligalam as the better of the two songs. Num udambil oduvadhu Thamizh raththam allava!

Dear All,

Thanks for your comments!

The next two songs are on its way Very Happy

Those two are completely different songs in ALL the aspects. Tune, Orchestration, Genre, Melody and what not..

I could'nt wait myself to complete the write-up for those !!!

Hey Ram,

That was indeed a soulful write-up about a soulful song. Great going on the "Piano Man" by a junior "Piano Man".

Cheers

Ram, you can take MULLIL ROJA... Kalaikoil by P.B.S & L.R.E for your piano series. Jazzy composition with exotic piano works, postlude is as seductive as P.b.s humming & L.R.E's voice.

Dear Ram,

Your write up on CHELLAKKILIKALAAM was wonderful !

As you had said KAVIARASAR-MELLISAI MANNAR-NADIGAR THILAGAM trio has created a history in this song !

Your bottom-of-the-heart narration of different aspects of the song clealy explains how a motherless child wants to listen to this number everyday to go to sleep ! (a live incident told by a fan to MSV in presence of vaidy)

Just now I feel like listening to his wonder-creation to go to sleep !
Good bye

Dad
