A Handful of Piano Picks - 16

Indeed , its a superb orchestration by the Master .. I always get a feeling that MGR songs are somewhat special . This song is another example no ?

The song has a beautiful brush drumming during the prelude and also for the pallavi part ....the double bass is simply splendid

Cheers cheers for a Vadhiyar song Smile

Dear Balaji..

Thanks for your response. Yes, MGR songs have always been special.

Having said that I'm now listening to Nadigar Thilagam song - another beautiful piano song - it is no way less than any other song listed in my series...This is going to be my next song for analysis!

This is always the problem with MSV sir's songs.... Each of his songs always compete with each other and we would be totally clueless if we try to select the best song of the lot Very Happy

Dear Ram,

One small correction. You have credited this song to Vaallee. As far as I know, all the songs of Ragasiya Police 115 were written by Kannadasan. At least, this is what the HMV cassette says!

The two songs selected by you for their outstanding use of piano are also personal favourites of mine (Paal Thamizh Paal and Chella Killigalam). I am also reminded of another great piano song - Paaduvoar Paadinal from Kannan En Kadhalan.

Mr. SVS,

Its 100% AGMARK Valee song only ! Besides, during this period, MGR had reduced his exposure towards Kavignar …was encouraging other lyricists ..>Valee was the favourite writer then

Even the song Kanne kaniye etc written by Valee only.

Dear SVS,

Various other sources I checked before posting this article confirmed that it is Valee.

These two lines are actually one of my top favourite lines in the whole Tamil Film Lyric...

See Valee's chioce of words and the "Celebration Mood" the lines convey! Am sure he definitely had a refreshing stamp in each in his songs and style! He is fabulous!

Otherwise he could'nt have been a pet for a task master like MGR!!! Very Happy

Dear Ram,

You have taken up a song that has Piano, Piano, Piano & Piano all the way. One of the rarest qualities of MSV is his ability to use any instrument for any situation and yet derive absolute melodies out of them is simply unique and irrreplaceable by any one. In fact in my opinion no body in the world (I repeat in the world) has used Piano to the extent our Legend has used. Truely an astounding write-up Ram.

During my recent visit to your house, I asked your dad to play this song which he had in his Ipod and asked your brother Raj also to join us in listening. Your brother Raj who happens to be a "Legendary" fan of AR Rahman instantly opined after listening.... uncle chance se illai uncle, enna oru orchestration!!!! Many of the present generation youngsters have a lot to listen to MSV and it is because of their ill listening opportunities they are getting carried away by a lot of "maladies" scored by these so called MD's of today. We need to create a mechanism through which we have to make them listen to what our Legend had done almost 5 decades ago that still rules the souls & minds of all of us and on top of that we are yet to listen to anything that could come closer to it. Come to think of it, it is a feeling that one must feel from the bottom of our hearts and I'll tell you those are the moments worth living till the last seconds of it. MSV moments..... Moments of Life!!!!

The next song you have planned to take up for analysis is the all time favourite of MSV himself. Whenever I drive him around, I never fail to play this song for him for, every time he listens to it he'd cry and make me cry in the process also. This is such a powerful song packed with emotions, emotions emotions all the way and Legend Kannadasan must also be given equal importance in your posting Ram. As Ramki said, this is a song that ensured total peace of mind for a tiny tot who lost his mother. The father was explaining to MSV (when I was with the Legend) how difficult was the situation for this child who refuced to accept the
fact that the mother was no more (she passed away of an ailment 2 years back) and hence became restless through out the night giving sleepless nights to the father. Then the father (who happens to be a singer in MSV's troupe) tries singing all kinds of songs but the child flatly refuses to yield. Then came the idea for this singer to sing "Chella Kiligalam Palliyiley"... Not only did the child sleep well but felt absolutely comfortable and the father continued to sing this song for many more days to comfort the child. What do you call this????? This is not musical experience but only GODLY EXPERIENCE!!!!! I just couldn't control myself and burst into tears when this incident was narrataed to MSV. That day I decided that, a music that does not affect or impact a soul is NOT MUSIC AND "it m(akes) u sic(k)!!!!

Chella Kiligalam... has some fine moments of Piano very subtly used and TMS had done absolute justice by his soulful rendering. 10 days back, MSV called us for a concert of MSV - TKR at the family wedding of Jeppiar. We had gone there and it was just unbelieable to see the Legend continuously standing up for more than 3 hours to perform. I have taken some nice videos and soon will send it to you for you to upload. TMS who happened to be a guest at the wedding but couldn't control his temptation and climbed into the stage to give a big hug and sang "Ulagam Pirandhadhu Enakkaga". In between the song he sang... kuyilgal paadum kalaikoodam kondadhu "ivaradhu arasaangam" pointing to MSV. Truely the Legend stands taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal amongst the creators we have seen (we'll never see also)!!!

One of our elite club members based in Bangalore, Shiva was gifted with all these songs by me. He became mad after listening to Paal Tamizh Paal, and called me to tell me that during his next visit we must listen to this song along with MSV and it did happen that way. We enjoyed every moment of MSV drowning in memories (I have shot video also) about this song. Shiva is also a great analyser and I hope after seeing this post he joins all of us for his unique analysis of this song. Over to you Shiva now!!!!

Ram, that was a great write-up & release Chella Kiligalam ( I can hardly wait) asap. BTW, haven't I got back my form?????? Very Happy

Dear Mr.Vaidy,
You are as mesmerizing as MSV himself and your narratives are palliatives in their own right. How do you manage to assemble the ideas is a model for any one who wishes to meaningfully pinpoint something. Great indeed.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai.
