Carnatic singer SriVidya ( Bhairavi ) is about to re-marry Kamal who is much younger to her . The decision was taken after much deliberations …. But when everything was about to fall in place , she realizes that her estranged daughter Jayasudha is about to marry Major Sundarrajan who is Kamal’s Dad ! You will not get a complex situation like this …. KB, known for such unconventional subjects , challenges the unassailable MSV-Kavignar combination ….

Even vocal critics of Kavignar will acknowledge that his greatest strength is his uncanny ability to come up with arresting words for Pallavi itself which will make even a common man understand the situation purely by the lyric …

How can you become your father’s father-in-law ?????????

Kannadasan’s opening lines start with KELVIYIN NAAYAGANE…..INDHA KELVIKKU BADHIL EDHAYYAA…

The choice of Vani Jayaram is a conscious stride by MSV as this movie is largely of a Classical singer’s life….

A mystified Srividya , in a concert e , tries to unknot the stalemate by indirectly asking Kamal himself to come out with a solution …

kelviyin naayaganae…. indha
kelvikku badhilaedhayyaa?
illaadha maedaiyilae ezhudhaadha naadagaththai
elloarum nadikkinroam - naame
elloarum paarkkinroam

KB , may be not happy with this already surcharged atmosphere, complicates the impasse further by bringing in a sick Rajini ( Srividya’s deserted Husband ) to the auditorium….

Now Kavignar changes the angle ……….. Pasuvidam kandru vandhu paalarundhum…..kandru paal arundhumbodhaa kaalai varum…. ( indicating the arrival of RK )

silaradhu vaadhdhiyaththil irandu saththam - andha
innisaiyaal unakku pirakkum vetkam
thaalikku maeloru thaali undaa?
vaelikkullae oruvan vaeli undaa?
kadhai eppadi? adhan mudiveppadi
?

Rajini’s objective is to seek clemency …repents for having deserted Srividya …….sends a message to forgive and forget……

A flabbergasted Srividya , even while singing, searches for her elusive husband …. Here the poetic camera work of Loganathan deserves mention ! magical cinematography as the camera itself will search for Rajini amongst the audience…..

Kavignar wins round 2 also with sensational lyrics equating the current plight with that of history ….

thalaivan thiruchchaanoor vandhuvittaan - mangai
dharma dharisanaththai thaedugiraan
alamaelu avan mugaththai kaanbaaloa? mangai
avanoadu thirumalaikkuch chelvaaloa?
selvaaloa? selvaaloa
?

Now, Jayasudha steps in the dias ( realizing the gravity of the scenario ) tries to assuage the deadlock……..on seeing her mother after a long time makes her emotional as she caringly sits close to her and supports the show ……

Oru kannum maru kannum paarththukkondaal...
paarththukkondaal...avai
onroadu onru sollum saedhi enna?
iru kannum onraagach chaerndhuvittaal - avai
irandukkum paarvaiyilae baedhamenna?

Tears pour out of Srividya insentience as he fondly receives her daughter back

bedham maraindhadhinru koavil kannae
namadhu vaedham thanai manandhu nadakkum munnae

Both, having forgiven their past , stand united now & they give away their current bedlam…
Now, its an exchange between Mother and daughter :

kannae un kaalam senra kadhai enna?
unnaik kaanap pizhaiththirundhaen vaeru enna?
udal eppadi?
munbu irundhaarpadi...
manam eppadi?
nee virumbumpadi...

Both are clear now …………….Srividya’s focus re-shifts back to Kamal…who by now is so frustrated that he had already moved away from the dias ( he will be playing Mridangam earlier )

Kavignar continues to dominate round 3 also :

pazhani malaiyilulla vel murugaa - sivan
pallaandu yaengi vittaan vaa murugaa
pidivaadham thannai vidu thirumurugaa - konjam
piriyaththudan pakkaththiru murugaa
thirumurugaa...thirumurugaa...

Srividya indirectly advises Kamal to declare truce with his Dad Major who watches anxiously all the developments from the audience…….

Sasirekha , the co-singer acknowledges the guidance of VJ while recording … Vani Jayaram was very particular on giving maxium stress to the lyrics…especially…. Orukannum…marukannum…parthu kondaal….Sasirekha fondly recollects the golden moments & felt elated for having sung with VJ and for a Master’s composition….She considers this song as one of her best ….

Two instruments play a key role here…..Violin & Mridangam….…..MSV nicely interweaves the instruments …takes us to elated state……..Violin nicely substitutes Srividya whenever she gives a pause……. So also Mridangam when Kamal vents his frustration through heavy pounding of the instrument…..Mridangam roars with fury when Jayasudha enters the dias with ….Badhil edhayyaaa !!

ABOORVA RAGANGAL , a 1975 movie …….is one of the quintessential classics of tamil cinema & one of the best of the classical music albums of Mellisai Mannar….The movie also takes credit for giving a solid platform for Kamal who was playing average / support artist roles earlier….the role of an angry young guy aptly fits for his age then….Probably the biggest contribution was the introduction of Rajinikanth…..

It’s a brilliant picturisation by KB ….a balancing act for having just used Ezu Swarangalukkul during title ……KB shows his expertise in handling an explosive theme so convincingly…Very difficult to judge whether Kamal or KB is the real hero ……KB penchant touches are ubiquitous…….

Finally, each character feels for the error of judgement & tread back to their respective tents.

Kamal (Prasanna) who is attacked by thugs is nursed back to vigor by classical singer Srividya (M.R. Bhairavi ) . Sri, on her part, treats him like a well wisher ……As events unfold , they are slowly drawn to each other and decide to marry despite the age diff. and her bitter past… The movie takes an interesting turn with Kamal’s Father Major getting into a similar Srividya like situation ….with a younger girl Jayasudha ( Ranjani ). When all the parties concerned get to know the truth, they get into a tangle….which further gets compounded by the entry of Srividya’s husband Rajini…How finally each character tries to resolve the impasse is the story is all about…….

Kamal emerges as the main protagonist

Srividya, daughter of the legendary, illustrious M.L.Vasanthakumari plays her role to perfection…. There is an air of maturity and composure in her expression …..I would say, this is the best performance of her……It was a courageous risk taken by Sri to play the role of middle aged mother to a young girl when she actually was around 23++ years then !!

Jayasudha is youthful, exuberant & chivalrous……Probably, KB adores this character …I could see the same type in Madhubala for Mamooty starrer Azagan….& also to some extent in Fatafat Jayalakshmi in Aval Oru thodar Kathai…

Major Sundarrajan is a seasoned performer…. Cultured artist ….plays his role with ease ….one of the stalwarts of tamil cinema…..& a long time associate of KB movies….

Dr. Nagesh’s double characterization… a surprise package …. For the comedy angle ….. KB even makes Kavignar appear as his patient…

MSV’s music was one of the major strengths of the movie ….the BGM was equally admirable

All songs ( except Kaikotti sirippargal ) occupied a decent air time …however, Adhisaya ragam was the most popular ……..

Each song is a masterpiece …..another landmark movie which the Master richly deserved the highest recognition…..but did it happen ??????

MSV-Kannadasan once again proved that they are masters to the situation……

dear balaji
probably responding , a late on this excellent song , which tops alltime fav list of mine

i expressed my views earlier , some how , it never got posted . or it got posted some other pages erraneously .

this song is so special , in the sense , the coordination , between the music and camera is so exemplary . and one can realise the same , if we rewind the song after seeing the scene .

if we listen to the lines ,

" THALAIVAN THIRUCHANOOR VANTHU VITTAN AVAN DHARMA DHARISINATHAI THEDU GINDRAN

while these lines are on . loganath's camera would be searching the crowd , and finally freeze on "the future super star " rajinikanth

and ofcourse kaviarssu , explains the whole story in this song as usual . and greatly sung, by vj , and sasirekha
what to say on the tune - its to be enjoyed .

i feel , the saddest truth , is this great song is overshaddowed by other great songs of athisayaragam , and ezhuswaranga

its like dravids' century , overshadowed by centuries from sachin or lakshman .
