Nenjil ore Aalayam - II

Dear friends,
I intend looking at this movie as a project that had a distinct dimension of its own. This observation gathers greater credence if we dispassionately consider how the very movie symbolizes the concept of 'New wave' as it broke most formulae of movie-making except of course the team work.
THE STORY
The plot in N O A is a typical Sridar subject in the sense that it also was woven as a love triangle , But the triangle never suffered from angularities that would normally lead to tense moments punctuated by bizarre events. But the story presented in N O A had a distinct sophistication , portraying absolute maturity on the part of the characters involved.
In their early youth, Kalyanakumar and Devika were in love at Coimbatore- their place. Under the force of circunstances they disjoin into their pattern of life with Kalyanakumar establishing himself as a Cancer specialist and Devika as a housewife marrying Muthuraman to clear off debts incurred by her parents. The lovers themselves do not know the whereabouts of each other but stay in mutual respect for each other. THIS IS PRECISELY THE STRENGTH OF THE STORY THAT ESTABLISHES THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN LOVE and LUST.[Too often movies fail to draw this line]
As time rolls by Muthuraman is detected to have an incidence of lung cancer [ one of the most dreaded as terminal illness]. Searching for a cure, the husband and wife come to Chennai hearing the reputation of Dr. Murali [portrayed by Kalyanakumar]. Devika receives the shock of her life on seeing her erstwhile lover as the Doctor. As a doctor K Kumar very much convinces Muthuraman of curing him though the latter harbours serious doubts of recovery. But he goes through the schedules of treatment as he feels it is better to stay with this doctor even if it meant the inevitable.
The experience is quite agonizing for Devika who is totally loyal to her husband and does not want to restore her earlier love to her lover. The doctor on his part is extremely decent and merely wishes that he should save the life of the husband- patient at any cost and effort.
The husband who inwardly believes that he may die puts the doctor and Devika in to an embarrassment by asking them to marry in the event of his succumbing to the disease. Devika is genuinely afraid of this turning into an opportune prospect for the doctor and suggests that she may not live a moment beyond her husband's death. It is nasty situation for the doctor,as he has one and only aim of saving the husband.
In this effort the doctor exerts himself physically and mentally carrying out a complicated surgery that saves the husband. In this demanding effort, the doctor literally donates his life only to turn immortal in the minds of all. Thus NENJIL ORE AALAYAM.
Being a movie, the treatment had the necessary ingredients of effective story telling, employing a right combination techniques some 47 years ago -- far ahead of its times in treatment and content.
There are other equally fascinating dimensions to suggest how it was a new way of movie-making in every sense of the term [ To Continue]
Warm regards Prof K.Raman Madurai
