NENJIL ORE AALAYAM --- IV

Dear friends,
Having looked at the story and screen play, the logical corollary is Acting, actors and action. Well, time and again we need to keep in mind that the item of our discussion is 47years plus and the key actors have reached heavenly abode years ago. Yet, delight engulfs us when we recall the DIMENSIONS OF DIGNIFIED ACTING at a time when TF acting was melodramatic and hyper-decibel dialogue delivery. By any reckoning, N O A was a landmark for all the intricacies of an Epic movie.
Star cast
It should be acknowledged that SRIDHAR's penchant to tap new talent gloriously revealed itself in NOA. It was to drive home the points the way he would prefer instead of having to 'accommodate' to the preferences of STARS who had begun to establish the culture of passive interference by suggesting the arrangement of scenes to fortify their social image. CVS was such a personality that he had behind him the knowledge of 'field experience ' from his days at Venus pictures and knew how to get over such prospects.

Actor KALYANAKUMAR was a cognizable hero in Kannada movies, while Mr.MUTHURAMAN WAS A GEM OF A STAGE ACTOR THOROUGHLY GROOMED BY Mr. Sahasranaamam of Seva Stage, Devika introduced as a heroine in Mudhalaaliby 1956 did not have a good breakthrough.
Mr. Nagesh -an immensely talented lad had to wait for a person like Sreedhar to tap him. V S Raghavan has been a good friend of CVS and KUTTIPADMINI BY HER SHEER NAGGING OF SREEDHAR, SNATCHED THE CHANCE TO PORTRAY THE ROLE OF the patient child and rightaway established herself in film acting those days. I choose to narrate their backgrounds to strengthen my perception. CVS preferred to have a team of actors of dependable talent but without any specific image among the TF audience.
Every person on this project really lived as the suggested character WITH A CLEAR MODULATION AND EXPRESSION that can be defined as 'THUS FAR AND NO FARTHER'. So to say, they simply expressed themselves by voice and facial movements in the most articulate way - BRILLIANTLY IMMORTALIZED ON THE CELLULOID BY A.VINCENT- P.N.SUNDARAM COMBO.
What can measured acting do to a movie and to movie fans was visibly demonstrated in N O A . At times, it is menacingly difficult to say who did better - KALYANAKUMAR or MUTHURAMAN?
Devika did her act of balancing between the past and the present by her blemishless acting that was hidden until she acted in N O A. Though of a very limited opportunity, Mr. Nagesh made the best of it and he has not looked back since then.
NOA proved beyond any shacow of doubt that audience accept any good product. They are open minded in appreciation.
Worthwhile projects need no scaffolding by STAR IMAGE.
People get involved if the movie touches upon real life issues.
The BIGGEST REVELATION WAS, A DIRECTOR and the TECHNICAL CREW are the PIVOT and FULCRUM for a movie. Actors should just do what the Director suggests. They can at best add to a movie but can not by themselves make it a success.
I hope these inferences on acting stay valid till date.
We have more to appreciate [To Continue]

Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai.
