The sovereign of love Gemini Ganesan romances with Devika !

A hark at the Piano, Lead Guitar doing the melody lines , the Violin compliments….. Brief exchanges between guitar and violin . Guitar taking the lead again .. a sudden Accordion ends on a sharp note …… a pause…… Odivadhu pol idai irukkum….

The accompanying Bangoos that follow is insightful of more exciting things to come !

The song has brilliant string work ….Violin passage is breathtaking in particular the 2nd interlude , the cascade of violins, simply marvelous stuff… the violin crescendo ascends and descends in a flourish ! Also, there will be a 2nd tier Violin playing the Bass !! Spellbinding!! The beauty is , both Violin and guitar trade off ……..Accordion intercepts very selectively …IMO, MSV used the Accordion selectively for ending notes in particular…..

A haunting prelude, romantic tune ..PBS & PS unleash their trademark improvisations ….. extrordinary counter melody

Double bass is pretty tidy….seem to be a default accompaniment for non folk compos.

PBS is exquisite ,artistic , characteristic best …..does improvisations for every inch of space given to him…….P.S. is all elegance ….. Irukkatttumeeeeee……hoi !! silky silver voice !! Astonishing tongue shake to each response from the Queen of South Indian film music …..

Even that extra Aahaa that PBS adds colour to the already gorgeous music !

PBS’s speciality is when he repeats a pallavi or a charanam, he makes it a point to give subtle change either in octave or in melody ! The wonder from Karnataka sings flat deliberately the Pallavi first but changes his style stylishly!

Adhu oyyaara nadai nadakkumm …..Just listen !!

What a variety the 2 singers bring in ! Each word is repeated with a conundrum, wheedle, poise, composure

The Charanams are just 2 sentence format only but the musical champions teasingly repeat the 2nd one with fine bit of extemporization !!

The song reaches its zenith when the bravura duo do a delightful humming……

The bangoos at the beginning of the charanam reminds the famous beat before Aasai vendumaa acham vendumaa ( Pachai vilakku )

Ithayathil nee is a Gemini – Devika paired movie of the year 1963 . The Mellisai Mannargal have given a royal feast :

• Netru varai nee yaaro naan yaaro

• Chitira poovizi vaasalile

• Poovarayum poongodiye

• Yaar sirithal enna

• Uravu endroru sol irundhaal

MSV appear to have followed a distinct model of musical array & orchestration whenever he had used PBS ….The Master was more conventional when there is TMS The mood becomes more of western for PBS , Nilave ennidam being an exception however…. …KAtru vandhal thalai sayum , Endhan paruvathil kelvikku badhil enna are all typical of GG…..PBS was born to sing for GG !......

The MSV-TKR with GG has produced some amazing movies like Bagyalakshmi, Padha kanikkai , Karpagam, Kathirundha kangal , Sumai thangi , Vazkai padagu , Hello Mr. Zamindar , just to name a few sans MGR / Sivaji Ganesan….. The fascinating tale of the 1960s…. The period between 1960 and 1965 really have produced unforgettable gems ….

Dear Balaji,

Netru varai nee yaaro naan yaaro is from "VAAZHKAI PADAGU" (1965).

Dear Mr. Balaji,
It is difficult to endorse your observation that MSV chose to be conventional or westernized while composing respectively for TMS and PBS. MAY BE YOU HAVE A FEW INSTANCES FROM WHERE YOU DRAW THIS INFERENCE. But , there are enough classical tunes for PBS in Kalaikoil, Kodimalar , Policekaaran magal, Naalam naalam of K.Neramillai, Raamu, Vazhkkaippadagu [all for PBS] and equally strong dose of westernized songs for TMS in a range of Sivaji, MGR, Jaisankar starrers. Quite often MSV has respected the situation and the mood more than according specfic treatments to singers. Certainly he refurbishes a song by appropriate orchestration that would be a perfect foil to the singer or singers. Somehow MSV or his music can never be fettered by a standard definition or formula that would readily fit into a frame work. So, I felt the need to say what I see. Ignore this viewpoint if I am wrong.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Madurai
