சிவாஜி அவர்களின் காதல் பாடல்கள் என்றால் உடனே நினைவுக்கு வரும் முக்கிய சில பாடல்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று. மெல்லிசை மன்னர் அவர்கள் மிகவும் பிரமாண்டமாக இசை அமைத்துள்ள பாடல்களில் இது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இந்த பிரம்மாண்டமான இசைக்கு உயிர் கொடுத்துள்ளன கண்ணதாசன் அவர்களின் காதல் ரசம் சொட்டும் வரிகள்.
இந்த படத்தில் சிவாஜி அவர்கள் ஒரு நாடக கலைஞர். முதலில் அவரின் ரசிகையாகி பின்பு அவரை காதலித்து மணம் முடிப்பவராக உஷா நந்தினி அவர்கள் நடித்துள்ளார். இந்தப்பாடல் ஒரு கனவுப் பாடல். மெல்லிசை மன்னர் இந்த பாடலுக்கு பல மெட்டுக்கள் அமைத்தார். இந்த பாடலை சிவாஜி அவர்கள் ஒரு நாடகத்தில் மேடையில் பாடத் துவங்குவார். அதற்கு ஒரு அற்புதமான மெட்டு போட்டிருப்பார் மெல்லிசை மன்னர். டி.எம்.எஸ். அவர்களும் ஒரு நாடக கலைஞர் எப்படி கம்பீரமாக குரலெடுத்து பாடுவார்களோ அதே போல் மிகவும் கம்பீரமாக இந்த பாடலை தொடங்குவார். இந்த நாடகத்தை காண வரும் உஷா நந்தினி அவர்கள் மெய்மறந்து இந்த பாடலை தானும் உடன் பாடுவது போல் கனவு காண தொடங்குவார். அந்த இடத்தில் சுசீலா அவர்கள் 'அன்பே, அன்பே, அன்பே என்று மிகவும் இதமாக, மெலிதான குரலில் இந்த பாடலில் இணைவார். அதிலிருந்து இந்த பாடல் ஒரு காதல் பாடலாக துவங்கும்.

இந்த காதல் பாடலுக்கு தான் போட்ட சில மெட்டுக்களில் எதை தேர்ந்தெடுப்பது என்ற குழப்பத்தில் இருந்த போது அங்கு வந்த மெல்லிசை மன்னரின் பரம ரசிகர் ஒருவர் இரண்டு மெட்டுக்களை தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார். அந்த இரண்டில் எந்த ஒன்றை பாடலாக்குவது என்று முடிவுக்கே வர முடியாமல் போனதால் இரண்டு மெட்டுகளையும் இணைத்து ஒரே பாடலாக்கினார்கள். முதல் சரணம் முடிந்து பல்லவியை மறுபடியும் டி.எம்.எஸ். & சுசீலா இருவரும் இணைந்து பாடும் இடத்தில் டி.எம்.எஸ். அவர்கள் பாடுவது ஒரு மெட்டு. சுசீலா அவர்கள் பாடுவது இன்னொரு மெட்டு. இந்த இரண்டு மெட்டையும் இணைத்து பாடலாகிய விதம்தான் இந்த பாடலின் தனி சிறப்பு.

இந்த பாடலின் பல இடங்களில் எதுகை, மோனையில் வரி அமைத்து கண்ணதாசன் அவர்கள் நம்மை பரவசப்படுத்தி உள்ளார்.
மோகம், ராகம், மேகம் என்று சரணத்தில் சுசீலா அவர்கள் பாடுவது
'கலை, இடை, கடை என தினம் வரும் சுகம்'. இந்த சரணத்தை மோகத்தில் ஆரம்பித்து மிகவும் அழகாக சுகத்தில் முடித்துள்ளார். இதில் குயில்களுக்கு 'சங்கீத குயில்கள்' என்று அடைமொழி கொடுத்து இன்னும் சிறப்பித்துள்ளார்
அடுத்து வரும் சரணத்திலும் 'பொன்மான், அம்மான், பெண்மான்' என்றும் 'கண், வாய், மெய்யோடு என்று பிரித்து எழுதி பின்பு 'கனிவாய்' என்று அடுத்த வரிகளில் சேர்த்திருப்பது 'என்ன ஒரு அழகு'!!!!

இந்த பாடலில் பல்லவியில் பாடலின் கூடவே வரும் அந்த ட்ரும்ஸ், ஒவ்வொரு சரணத்திற்கும் முன்பு வரும் அந்த வயலினும், புல்லாங்குழலும் நம்மையும் ஒரு கனவு உலகத்திற்கு அழைத்து செல்லும். இவை அனைத்துக்கும் மேல் ஷெனாய் பாடும் ராகமும் அதற்கு இணையாக டி.எம்.எஸ். முதலில் ராகம் பாடுவதும், இரண்டாவது முறை அந்த ஷெனாய் ராகத்திற்கு இணையாக சுசீலா அவர்கள் ராகம் பாடுவதும் வார்த்தைகளில் வர்ணிக்க முடியாத ஒரு இனிமையை மனதில் ஏற்படுத்தும்.

இந்த பாடலை ஒவ்வொரு முறை கேட்கும்போதும் புதிதாக கேட்பது போன்ற உணர்வையே தரும். இதுதான் இந்த பாடலின் சிறப்பு.

Dear Meenakshi,

An excellent pick by you. One of MSV's greatest hits to have ruled the hit charts of TFM in the 70's. A song which was composed by our Legend that forced many eye brows to raise as this tune was born under the influence & suggestion of a boy serving tea to the crew involved in the recording. I believe Kavignar was so furious when he heard that a tea boy was suggesting to MSV to mix the first line of a particular tune and the 3rd line of another tune and thus was born - yet another immortal from our EMPERROR. Even now MSV still attibutes the success of this song and never fails to credit this tea serving boy who according to him was the sole inspiration behind this song that day. What a way for our Master to recognise an unsung hero!!!!!!!! Great song indeed this Madhana Maaligaiyil!!!!!!

By the way the song Kettavarellaam Paadalaam from Thangai (am I correct??) was selected by a Post Man who had come to the recording studio at that moment as this also turned out to be yet another brain teasing moment for MSV & KD to choose the best of the lot!!!! So much so, I believe KD jokingly uttered to call the same post man when they were confronted by a similar situation in their lives on an another occassion!!!! What a Team that was???? Ninaithaaley, Kanner varugirathu!!!

Thank you all. Of course the movie had a sad ending and Shivaji's character was so tragic. It also has two beautiful pathos of 'TMS'. One is 'ammamma thambi endru nambi' and the other one is 'chinchinukkaam chinna kili, sirikkum pachai kili'. Both are really good pieces. The way 'TMS' sings them brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.

Dear Meenakshi mam and others ,
All of you have rightly narrated your responses to the song. This number by TMS and PS rightaway turned out to be a mega hit from the very first day of its arrival. MSV has a special technique of orchestration / embellishment for such numbers. It is beyond all words and vocabulary to precisely express our responses to such songs. On difeerent occasions TMS and PS have rendered the same lines respectively in high and low pitches and vice versa.
By any understanding, it is very difficult to follow different octaves when the partner is towing a different pitch altogether. On many enthralling numbers MSV has brilliantly exploited this technique with a telling effect.
As Meenakshi mam has suggested , Kannadasan has rendered a high quality lyric richly soaked in literary expressions- a genre that seems to have bid "GOOD BYE'' to Tamil cinema. Once again thank you all for this nice opportunity.
