When the bud is ready,it stands up tall on slender stalk,
splits to show a line of petalbetween the two halves of its green skin,
as a nun's wimple shows barely nose, eyes, and chin.
Soon petals pulse, push back the prickly pod,Flounce out,
sway in morning breeze, dance in the sun,
a flamenco extravaganza, while the pod partners
bow low, fall back to watch in amazement.
Listening to Kaalangalil aval vasantham early in the morning while jogging or a brisk walk gives a vibrant feeling always ! a sense of freshness runs through the whole system & one will feel as if you are in an Ozone atmosphere
The beginning year of the glorious 1960s saw the making of Paava mannippu, part of the famous Paa series , the Bhimsingh domain ….
Though Nadigar Thilagam is the main hero, Gemini Ganesan was given equal footage & a song….needless to cite, it was a romantic number ….GG admiring his lover Savithri & sings in his customary casual manner……GG looks absolutely handsome …..
Picturised in the once upon a time water flowing Sathanoor dam , very close to the temple town Thiruvannamalai was a favourite outdoor spot for tamil cinema makers which gradually gave way to Brindavan gardens…
This song has a superb Mouth organ & double bass work……Listen to the prelude for Mouth organ ….& also during the interludes ….Double bass guitar is at its brilliant best well complemented by Mouth organ & flute…..Another noteworthy aspect is the tabla rhythm …running like a Rajdhani …..
Application of Mouth organ with a double bass shows incredible sense of imaginative work by the duo….this small instrument ( probably the smallest instrument ) is virtually extinct now …..
The gorgeous humming of PBS as he takes on the charanam is a fine bit of improvisation…..Such subtle changes are real surprise packages offered by the duo …
The pallavi is repeated but with a delicate variation….the first one is backed by guitar counter while the second will be through beautiful violin….
Kavignar at his overwhelming best penning arguably one of the very best of lyrics in tamil cinema till date. The song also high level of decorum & demureness in describing the class of his lover… He even takes a leaf out of Bhagavat Geetha for மாதங்களில் அவள் மார்கழி
The whole song is class embodied but the words….
கண்போல் வளர்ப்பதில் அன்னை
அவள் கவிஞன் ஆக்கினாள் என்னை is the most captivating to me…..why me ? even Nadigayar Thilagam Savithri seemed to acknowledge these words as she nods in admiration…..
I understand this song was the gateway for PBS to join the Gemini Ganesan league . It must have been a major risk for MSV-TKR to experiment with PBS as A.M.Raja was considered a hot favourite for GG ….The fabulous success of this song gave enough confidence to MSV …. What followed was a string of wonderful solos, duets for the PBS-Gemini combination in the early 60s …. The pair worked out so well that PBS was stamped as a GG specialist ….. The silken voice of PBS also suited Muthuraman well….As TMS dominated both Makkal Thilagam and Nadigar Thilagam and in the 70s, GG movies became a rarety …..the emergence of Jesudas and SPB gradually put an end to the celebrated run of P.B.Srinivas……
Songs like Kalangalil aval vasantham are absolutely PBS’s province….The MSV-TKR-GG-PBS songs are evergreen & eternal part of the glorious 60s…….
Paava Mannippu , another musical feast by the MSV-TKR era is an audio delight to the connoisseurs of music……a spate of songs which richly deserved the highest recognition….. |

Hi Balaji,
As was expected from you an excellent write-up on the cult song "Kaalangalil Aval Vasantham". PBS himself has said in so many forums that this song changed the course of his career to superstardom! From this song he became the singing voice of Kaadal Mannan Gemini Ganesan.
However, my personal favourite of PBS solos set to tunes by VR is "Ilamai Koluvirukkum", from "Hello Mister Jamindar". The prelude and interludes of this song simply raises goose-bumps.
The lyrics ..."Anaithu valarpavalum thai allava, anaippil andanguvadum avalallava, kavignar paaduvathum, kalaignar theduvathum, ilagyar naaduvathum pennallava, pen iyarkayin seethana parisallava"... among my favourite lines of the great KD.
You have rightly mentioned about the fantastic mouth organ usage by VR. They had used it deliciously in "Pirakkum Podhum Azhugindran" by Chandra Babu in "Kavalai Illatha Manithan".
They also used the shehnai, bulbulthara, sarangi and some other north Indian instruments to telling effect in many of their compositions. What about their usage of Nadaswaram, the king of all instruments, in songs such as "Oli Mayamana Ethirkaalam" in "Pachai Vilakku"! Simply great! |
