MSV and melody are inseparable. The MSV dominated early 70s witnessed another splendid melody ...........

and this time it was for KR Vijaya ....

K.R.VIJAYA …..ever since she made her debut in Karpagam…..an actress who could sustain for a lengthy duration….

A leading actress for long despite competition…..

Interestingly, KRV’s peers and successors faded over a period of time but she was still in the limelight for several years !

Generally film industry will write off a heroene once she gets married. Also, the youth doesn’t last long which also had been a factor determining the star value. However KRV was the only actress who successfully maintained her stardom even after her marriage….

besides she could play a middle aged woman role quite with ease…..this was needed as a support cast for Nadigar thilagam in the 70s….

It will be superfluous if I say that KRV was very very popular amongst the women of mid 60s up to mid 70s….ask some one belonging to the said period and she will vouch for KRV ! Another reason for this could be she played lots of Amman roles which made her famous amongst the masses…

You name any actor of yesteryears and KRV would have paired with him ! Makkal thilagam, nadigar thilagam, Jaishankar , Gemini Ganesh etc …KRV had worked successfully to give some memorable movies in the late 60s and early 70s…..

However, the one movie which KRV herself will cherish forever could be DHEERKA SUMANGALI….

Directed by A.C.Thirulokchandar., this movie featured a galaxy of stars headed by Muthuraman as husband of KRV….

The main theme focused on the love and emotional bondage , intimacy between husband and wife of Muthu and KRV ….its takes the various stages in their life…..how they manage successfully with an excellent understanding of each other…give and take ….more or less like Amitabh’s Baghban !

ONE OF THE BEST SONGS OF EARLY 70s appeared in this movie….

And this song which is probably VANI JAYARAM ‘s FIRST IN TFM is one of the most memorable songs of Mellisai Mannar, KRV, Muthu and VJ herself !

MALLIGAI YEN MANNAN MAYANGUM PONNAANA MALAR ALLAVO

Shall we go to the need for this Kaalathai vendra oru paadal ?

Young and recently married couple – Muthu and KRV…..getting annoyed with behaviour of some relatives….unable to control his anger and frustration …..comes back home …upset…..with what happened that day……

His intimate life partner , KRV , like any other wife …quickly assesses the mood of her beloved hubby ….and starts cajoling him and comforts him with a splendid number……

For those friends who are married, are you not seeking solace and comfort from your wife whenever you get disturbed …only a wife will understand what her husband thinks and what he expects and quickly gives her best …shares with him , his good and bad and absorbs everything…. Virtues of an Indian woman….this is what married life is all about
When I mention this, my thoughts automatically goes to the golden lyrics in Un Kannil neer vazhindhaal en nenjil from Vietnam veedu wherein Kavignar will make our hearts pain by penning ….kala chumai thaangi polay…maarbil enai thaangi…veezum kaneer thudaipaai…. Adhil yen vimmal thanindhadadee…….aalam vizudhugal pol uravu ayiram vandhumenna ……Yen thevayai yaar arivaar ……unnai pol deivam ondray ariyum !

ACT , beautifully demonstrates this great Indian concept in this song…..if you read the song , you will realize what a splendid wordings that Kavignar had given and what a lovely voice VJ possessed those days and what a pleasant piece of acting KRV and Muthu did in this song !

The wife character doesn’t have any ego ….she says ….EN MANNAN MAYANGUM PONNAANA MALAR ALLAVO ! Malligai poo is one of the commonly available flowers in Tamil nadu and every household will have this without fail and Kavignar touches this through his lyrics…

While in the initial part of the song, Muthu will be very upset , the director will show the gradual reconciling of Muthu and gets cooled down totally by his wife’s comforting song and gets back to normalcy …from here , he will start admiring her !

The nicely developed screen play takes the pair to the next generation and shows the various motions on how they manage with the changing times before finally calling it a day…..together….

As the movie draws to a close, the golden voice of PS sings DHEERKA SUMANGALAI VAAZGAVAY….INDHA THIRUMAGAL KUNGUMAM VAAZGAVAY…

Drew huge crowd especially women to theatres

Needless to mention, this movie was very successful in the box office….

Back to the song ………The senior master never failed on melody ! this song was no exception….with delicate touch….MSV echoes the fondness of a loving wife through One can hear VJ’s golden voice modulation when she sings…Pon aana malar allavo ……and also during…..nam illam sorgam thaan….
This song is so attached to VJ that wherever she sings, the audience will ask for this number first …VJ is one of those GIFTED singers in the 70s who had given some scintillating songs …..which are evergreen
…..

MSV shows his presence of mind by precise usage of instruments like flute , rhythm guitar and tabla in a very subtle manner.. a real master of melody……

Its nice to hear once again from the same old golden voice intact with VJ when she sang sometime back in Jaya TV …and this makes me wonder whether VJ was born to sing this song !?

MSV soon composed another beauty.... NADHAMENNUM KOVILILAY....

EZU SWARANGALUKKUL ETHANAI PAADAL

KELVIYIN NAAYAGANAY

It goes without saying that MSV was the chief architect of giving a gem of a singer .... VANI JAYARAM.... and no wonder that she admires MSV even today......

The lilting melody from this Malligai en mannan mayangum is so fascinating that experts on classical music were struggling to identify the raga element ( including the great Lalgudi Jayaraman ) Very Happy

Dear Balaji,

Great analysis and writing. Apart from the song you also touch the surrounding sequences, movie trends at those periods, general info about actors/actresses, the box office details etc. This is like a great source of information for people like me and ones in this generation, who were born a couple of generations after those era. Please post more of your analysis and info.

Truly informative and educative!

Dear friends,
Seeing the write-ups on this number from Dheerga Sumangali, quite a few frames of nostalgia run through the back of my mind. The first ever listening to this song was from Chennai Vaanoli nilayam's sunday evening broadcast of the most fabulous songs [needless to say they were MSV's numbers] in Sept-1973. The very first hearing took us by a magic spell as it were, in the sense, the movie had not reached the screen, VJ was then not much known to TFM lovers and yet the impact was of a very rich order. All my friends were MSV breathers all through their lives and we used to wonder at the way this song had been composed. How we were totally taken off guard by this number was the sheer orchestral preludes of strings, flute and a real fluency of complex notes that seamlessly blended in a way absolutely characteristic of M.S.VISWANATHAN. Another possessive trait of this song's grandeur lay in its style of absolutely fresh tune setting, so very ably adapted by a silken voice of A NEW GENRE IN VANI JEYARAM. THE SONG NUANCES WERE FAR BEYOND THE MENTAL HORIZONS OF ANY CRITIC. All that everyone could say of the song was "MAGNIFICENT". Indeed the general belief in our minds was whenever MSV wanted to avail of a new singer he took pains to embellish the number ensuring the life for that singer and paved the way for a golden era for all such singers of his introduction. 'Malligai en mannan mayangum' has indeed been a "ManangaL mayangum song" through all these 35 years of its lively existence.
Thank you friends for this nice opportunity to share my feelings about the song.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai
