According to a very knowledgable music composer rangaswamy parthasarathy who had done more then one dozen tamil movies , who has been living in the U.S for the past 15 years , the basis of legandary music director G.ramanathan is essentially carnatic music .
wheras the basis of acharya M.S.V. , in majority of the cases , is essentially hindustani classical music.

Discerning music lovers can accept the fact that bharatiya sangeet (indian music) was uniform all over india . there was no carnatic or hindustani bifurcation . with the advent of mughal invation and ruling , persian influence being exerted in northern part of india .
beacause of this the music in north india went through a noticable change .our indian ragas were made even more simple and appealing .
emphaisis was laid on the melody content of a raga , and its expansion than on lyrical details .

consicously or through inner passion , acharya M.S.V. shifted his loyalty to hindustani type of music . this will be more evident if you take songs made out by any other director is juxtaposed to that of the one created by A M.S.V. - in both cases same raga is used .

let us take raag bhimpalasi

1. vaaraai nee vaaraai pogum idum vegu dhuram - movie : mandhirikumari is a song based on this raag by G.Ramanathan
the type is essentially carnatic

2.singara velane deva - song based on bhimpalasi ( also called as carnataca devagandhari and abheri)
composed by S.M.Subbhaia naidu , again in carnatic form

3.isai tamil nee saidha arum sadhanai
a fantastic song based on raag bhimpalasi by highly endowed music director K.V.Mahadevan in thiruvillaydal

wheras A.M.S.V. has given out a master piece in bhimpalasi in an authentic hindustani style . a song that will be a reference point for anyone who wants to fathom into the nuances of bhimpalasi -

malarnthum malaratha pathi mallar polla (pasa malar)

the stunning and mind blowing interlude pieces will be a treat for even a musically ignorant person.

poomalayil oru malligai (ooty vArai uravu) is yet another crystal clear reference point as to howw to make a film song in hindustani format .the beggining aalap of the song and the interlude music in both the charanams will convince any nuteral person that ACHARYA M.S.V IS A PERMANANT RESIDENT OF THE GANDHARWA LOKHA.

it does not mean that A.M.S.V had not exhibited his strangle hold on carnatic pattern .

pazhamudir cholai ille thozhi ( kozhandayum deivamum)
will be a reference point .(bhimpalasi)

now take for discussion one of the most melodious film song of india .
muthukalo kangal ( nenj irrukum varai)- a song like this can surface on mother earth once in a PRALAYAM (destruction and creation of new world). it is suggested wrongly by many that it is based on raag madhyamavati or shree ragam, but this song which can be patented by acharya M.S.V. , is made in the raag megh malhar . incidentally as far as my knowledge goes acharya M.S.V. has made only one song in this raag.

swara tiwra n ( n2) is not used in madhyamavati and shri ragam and used only in megh malhar . the step " PADITHA
PADAM ENNA UN KANGAL " swara ri is depresseed 3 times in both the octaves which is the characterstic point of megh malhar according to text books on hindustani music.

this also proves that M.S.V. very often creates songs on ragas that flows from his soul and he has got innate understanding on the swara patterns of indian classical ragas . this quality must be treated as a gift bestowed upon him by sapthaswara devathas who inturn commanded by matha sarawathi.

Dear Mr Ravi lsr,
Thank you for reminding us of the yester generation composer Sri. R.Parthasarathy.He has given some very good numbers. At the moment what comes to my mind is a famous song from the movie "KALYAANA MANDAPAM" sung by KJJ and S Janaki. The song is 'Koodhalile nei thadavi, kulir vizhiyil mai thadavi' for the artistes Nagesh and Manimala with Nagesh as the Chiththappa of Manimala. Why I wish to recall it here is, the then MDs have really done excellent compositions even for obscure movies. Our friends may add to any information on R.P.
Your observations on MSV's style of composition, portray a new dimemsion of MM Being a raw listener with no training in any form of music, I have just been enjoying MSV's multitude of masterpieces with the lone understanding that, he is a legend unparalleled with a repertoire unimaginably huge though he stays disproportionately humble even when asked to come out with "how it was done?". That does not in the least alter his stature as a mega composer. Our common lamentation has been that the industry and the agencies do not deem it ideal to honour him. Yet, all all knowledgeable observers have made it amply clear that he is a leader in his own right with abundand talent and profound blessings of GODDESS SARASWATHY- the giver of all. It is my pleasure to profusely thank you for your excellent posting on MSV, as it holds a mammoth promise that there are as many dimensions of MM as there are rasikas to this great wizard of our times.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai

Your analysis highlights how much work has been done in composing each song. Thanks.
