Today, I happenned to listen to one of the recent numbers from a movie called - "Pallikoodam". Music Director: Bharadwaj. The song name is "Rose Mary"

It is based on the tune of the song "Naanamo" from "Aayirathil Oruvan".

Is Remix Right (or) Wrong? Is it Good (Or) Bad? It is open to whole lot of discussions and debates and am not going into that topic.

My question here:

1) Is the composer whose tune is taken for remix informed about this?
2) Is the composer who is doing the remix gets the consent/approval from the song's original composer?
3) Is the Original composer's name mentioned in the "Credits" section of the Audio Cassette and in the "Movie" - mentioning that the song was originally tuned by so and so person.

I dont think any of the above would have happenned in this case (or) be it in any form of remix.

My personal opinion:

1) It is not Right or Just to use a person's creation without his consent.
2) It is not Legal to use a person's Intellectual Property (Music, in this case) without his consent.

People in the entertainment/Audio industry please clarify!!!

Dear Mr Ram,
I too have had the misfortune of seeing Pallikkodam song BASED ON Naanamo. What is hapening around is despicable to say the least. Strictly speaking the very idea is illegal and unethical except if the later borrower drops his name from the composer's slot, for it is just modified here and there to accomate the latter's inability to render /reproduce the glorious elegance of the original. In a country like US all the agencies involved would have to shell out their lives' fortune for any violation of Copy right. In this country, all that fetches money is fair. On the aspect of acknowledging the original composer , there are finer issues. So long as they hide it , it is better, for, the later generation may mistake the creator as a bad contributor looking at the impoverished remix. Leaving aside these legal /social issues, an inescapable onclusion is, people are bereft of ideas and would desperately make a song somehow. This very approach is unknown in film history till recently, except in some very rare movie sequences where the old original would be replayed to drive home the exact effect conceived by the first makers. [example Manmadha lelaiyai of MKT was used in the movie Manmadha leelai of KB]. Let us be frank . People want fame and have no frame of mind to put in creative labour. Honest observation of history reveals that only creators are remembered and respected and imitations merely satisfy a temporary need like rented "covering" ornaments.
STUPIDITY IS SPREADING IN MANY SPHERES. Nothing more.

There is one point to be discussed reg remix. A landlord generously allows his land to a peasant for ploughing, sowing, etc. for agricultural activities. The peasant makes use of this fertile land to the maximum and reaps all the benefits and becomes rich. One fine day, he makes fool of people, the landlord and the others, creates some loophole, claims that since he is using the land for quite long time, the land is his. This injustice is in someway gets the backing of the bigwigs who were the opponents of the landlord. The landlord helplessly looks everything, he does not want to indulge in these kind of activities and lets the peasant take the land on his own. Will you pity the landlord or appreciate the peasant who ruthlessly took away the (I don't want to use harsh words) land of the landlord? Here the landlord is the Mellisai Mannar. The peasants are the present day music composers (is it worth calling) and the backing is given by the media.

Dear Ram,

I fully endorse your view on the blatant copying that has become the order of the day. We are talking about songs being copied, what about movies itself ??? Recently I had to watch (rather forced to watch would be the right way to express) Naan Avanillai - an absolute crap of a movie in which the song Mandara Malarey was lifted straight from the original Naan Avanillai by KB. I asked MSV why such things are allowed and why there were no protest from him to which he replied - "ennamo pannitu porranga, enna seiyya mudiyum". I felt bad as MSV himself was helpless.

Ram, this is a mad mad commercial world we are living in now, there is no shame, no decency, no etiquette, at all for these so called unscrupulous MD's who want to earn name, fame & a quick buck by hook or crook and at the same time they also escape under the guise of saying - "imitation is the highest form of flattery". Let's all raise up and observe a minute's silence to express our anguish at some of the best orchestrated songs being raped (MSV terms remix as rape) right in front of us.

A small message to all the MD's of the present generation - Please get inspired to create something that is pleasant to listen to!!! and if not, quits please!!!

what is that the remix is going to achieve .
this new song was too fast and i still feel that ARR should not have done that
but still when the national anthem is being sold today for a song i may say this is just a period where we have to see this and keep quiet for the simple reason that the cinema industry is commercially built where as our feeling is built with feelings
lets ignore them
when the composers have not even left suprabatham and karpoora nayagiye where we have to break our our head
as a matter of protest wherever we happen to listen this we should tell others whoever exists over there that this is not called remix - it is called comix ( does it sound like comics )

I used to listen to AIR Vividha Bharathi "Ranjani- Sri rangani" most of the days.

As Mr K R Gopinath, a seasoned and highly popular Carnatic Violonist introduced the Shankarabharanam ragam today, he discussed some of the songs pertaining to that raga.

One thing he talked (praised)about was "Vellikinnanthan" from Uyarndha Manithan ;then of course he played another one- from "Naan Sigappu manithan" commenting it as a good song from Ilayaraja . Then the second song was "Kuzhloodhum kannanukku" AS Ms Jayashree (co-Compere) said this one is also from Ilayaraja, KRG commented - and I am giving it in exact words- "This one is a beautiful composition jointly done by Ilayaraja and Mellisai Mannar .... It is not Ilayaraja alone but jointly by Ilayaraja and Mellisai Mannar"- He didnt mention MSV by name whereas he mentioned Ilayaraja only by name. I was quite amused by this. Knowledgeable people never miss to realize MM's true worth.

I would like to add some words about the songs composed by viswanathan-ramamurthy jointly and m s viswanthan alone. This is what is my observation about their songs.

1. Songs are tuned to a particular raaga and every effort was made to follow the raaga until the end.

2. Choice of instruments used in background and interludes reflect the mood, tone and tempo of the song. For this reason, nobody can ever make compositions like viswanathan-ramamuthy for their songs.

Remixes would come and go as long as it is a new sound, but the originals would always stay. Nobody cares for Bippi Lahari's DISCOed(remixed) Raj Kapoor songs today.

Its shame on the remix composer to this, the more and more they do this, more and more their own music becomes unpopular.

(Share in the Audio Rights)

No doubt, the trend of 're-mix' is a 'DECEASE' created by present cine personalities. It clearly shows the present musicians and lyric writers have 'no capacity' to create their own.

A musician, let it be ARR or Yuvan or Vidhyasagar or Baradhwaj or Harris, who remixed (copied) a old song, then they and their fans has NO RIGHT to call Vedha or Deva or SG as copy cats.

The MDs who are all remixing the old songs are nothing but copy cats.

Recently I felt more pain when hearing the remix of L.R.Eswari's wonderful devotional number "Kapoora naayagiye kanagavalli". The tune was used for a cheap duet/dappaanguthu song.

If they loose their capacity to create in their own tunes, better try to produce the films without songs. But they have no rights to damage the old (wonderful) songs
.

Finally, A.R.Rahman into Remix.

Film:

Remixed Song:
Original Film:

MSV knows about this?

Vaidy/Dad, please check with him and see his reaction.

(I'm surprised that ARR did not stand per his earlier Principle(?))

Dear Irene, Ram and others,
Remix of the old songs clearly destroys the grandeur of an old number both from the point of view of lyricists and of composers. Mr Irene has angrily called it the 'DECEASE' the most appropriate term to signify the death. In this case it refers to the death of Composing ability of the MD however mighty his popularity may be. Also, anything dead has to decompose in course of time. Obviously,
TAMIL FILM MUSIC IS DECOMPOSING AT THE HANDS OF DECEASED MDs Besides, any reproduction is A VIOLATION OF COPY RIGHT.Most probably our knowledgeable[?] MDs have misunderstood COPY RIGHT as a legal RIGHT TO COPY. It is time that the MDs association seriously reviewed the situation to bring in a much-needed discipline realizing that to create every single piece [even those of poor quality] how much they toil and is it proper to rob someone of his glory and mutilate it at will? A major step to stem this rot could be to formulate a rule that the producer should pay 50% of the fee[of the present MD] to the earlier MD and lyricist or their descendants as compensation and also acknowledge the original creation and creators on the Title cards of the movie. There is resentment among all music lovers and also among the cine personalities for Remix.
In the latest episode [20-10-07] of Ennodu pattu padungal on Jaya TV, there was a segment where the competitor has to render a song in the original format and also on changed sruthi and 'Thaalam' to test the ability of singer to adapt. On this approach, SPB remarked that by this modification, many songs lose their grandeur and THIS IS THE DAMAGE BEING DONE IN THE NAME OF 'REMIX' of old numbers. Honestly none can enjoy a remix as it is a pathetic effort of the INCOMPETENT to promote themselves by IMITATING THE GLORIOUS CREATORS , to SHAMELESSLY BE PARADING AS NEW COMPOSERS. All lovers of Quality music must unite and register protests in any available form and forum to put and end to this menace.
Warm regards Prof.K.Raman Navi Mumbai
