If one is given a task to list the PHILOSOPHICAL SONGS OF MSV- KAVIGNAR combination, I would say , it’s a herculian task. The duo of MSV-TKR in the 60s and latter MSV solo with Kavignar have given some time immemorial songs which are even worth listing in school books

However, there are some select lyrics which have been composed in a unique manner .

One such is MANIDHAN ENBAVAN DEIVAMAAGALAAM

From the movie SUMAI THAANGI , which in my opinion should be grouped under one of the very best of tamil cinema.

Its another movie of the great 60s.

The story dwelves about the life graph of a young guy GEMINI GANESAN who could not lead his life the way he wanted but gets forced to undergo so many sacrifices and pressures . A stage also comes when he had to forgo his love with Devika for the sake of his family’s welfare. Like this, he gives away everything in life and finally converts himself into Christianity and takes solace as a Catholic Priest.

It is always said that one becomes flat once he achieves what he aspires for in his mission. The same kavignar had also written KAYYIL KIDAIKKUM NAAL VARAI ( in Kadhal enbadhu edhu varai song ). So, GG , after fulfilling his sacrifice for the day ( he drops himself out of college and takes up an employement for Rs. 150pm. He would have become a BA degreee holder in just 3 months time which would have enhanced his future prospects )goes for a walk in Chennai Marina beach side .

The song being shot during night is another great imaginative work by Sridhar group .

What a presence of mind by the composers VR ! With a mild volume group violin, the classy song takes off and then onwards MSV’s penchant piano takes over . The mild approach is precise with the situation given as it reflects the mood of GG ( PBSrinivas ) who also grins philosophically after singing the first sentence DEIVAMAGALAAM . Here the duo beautifully apply a melodious flute which will give a followthrough as if it wants PBS to come back to the pallavi again !

From now on, its all Kavignar , coming out with some extraordinary words but so simple enough to reach a common man.

VAARI VAARI VAZANGUMBODHU VALLAL AAGALAAM
VAAZAI POLA THANNAI THANDHU TYAGI AAGALAAM
URUDHIYODU MEZUGU POLA OLIYAVI VEESALAAM
!!

As the song moves to charanam, a soulful flute and piano and latter a violin in brief before the tabla guy steps in .

Kavignar again :

OORUKENDRU VAANZDHA NENJAM SILAIGALAAGALAAM
URAVUKENDRU VIRINDHA ULLAM MALARGALAAGALAAM
YAARUKENDRU AZUDHAPODHUM THALAIVANAAGALAAM
MANAM…. MANAM ADHU KOVILAAGALAAM

For second charanam :

MANAMIRUNDHAL PARAVAI KOOTIL MAANGAL VAAZALAAM
VAZIYIRUNDHAL KADUGUKULLE MALAYAI KAANALAAM
THUNINDHU VITAAL THALAYIL ENDHA SUMAYUM THAANGALAAM
MANAM… MANAM.. ADHU KOVILAAGALAAM
!!

Superb lyrics no ! MSV-TKR seem to deliberately down play the orchestration as a mark of respect to Kavignar and honour him befittingly . See, this is one reason why we worship MSV today as he knew where and when to dominate and when to downplay .

The piano plays a very active role throughout the song as it is being applied as a chord player ( normally guitar dons that function )

One can clearly get PEACE while listening to this song .

After A.M.Raja, it was PBS who ruled over GG in the 60s and was virtually unstoppable with his evergreen melodies while TMS was dominating MGR & Nadigar Thilagam.

Sridhar-Kavignar-MSV-TKR combination was one of the very best in tamil cinema as they all worked together as a committed team often coming out with some outstanding works. This movie is one such .

The movie is not short of philosophical songs . Mayakkamaa kalakkamaa is another mind blowing lyric and splendid tune .

Coming back to the song, if we count the noof instruments used, well its very few…… flute, piano, tabla and violin ……but what an impact it creates .

I would emphatically say that if someone needs to get motivated, just listen to this scintillating composition – Manidhan enbavan deivamaagalaam .

Dear Balaji,
This song is indeed a unique situation that is one of its kind. I feel our Master and the Kavingnar were fortunate to get many more such situations when they ruled the industry and gave us such GEMS that could be associated to everyone's life. What a source of inspiration are these for a layman !!! In my opinion , there wasn't anything new that was conveyed ,but still Cinema is such a powerful medium that reaches the people like nothing else and this Great duo made perfect use of it to convey to the public in their own way what is available in the Great literary works of ancient times.

Balaji sir...Kalakeeteenga..... I would call this a COMPLETE song !! The lyrics, music, orchestration, picturisation, acting and your WRITE UP everything is perfect !!!!

MSV Rules !!!

Dear Balaji

Thanks for writing about this song. I think song arrives after GG getting job and feel very relax. ONE CANNOT DEFINE MSV-KD COMBINATION UNDER CINEMA SONGS . THEY CREATED WONDERS FOR HUMAN LIFE AND YOU WILL FEEL THAT WHEN YOU COME ACROSS THE SITUATION IN YOUR LIFE. I DONT THINK ANY OTHER MD WILL GIVE SUCH A IMPACT ON YOU.

One can clearly get PEACE while listening to this song

Yes absoultely right. MSV can create magic with more instruments and he can give same kind of impact with minimum instrument also.

regards
ramesh

in the song manithan enbavan as usual the continuity plays a vital role like in any work of msv
with a back ground music which lasts only for few seconds the song is enlivened

As u said this is 100% true. They cared more for the situation and lyrics and never intended to dominate! Balaji, How meticulaously you narrate the song! WORDLESS!!

With love
