As I was returning from office in my car today, my driver, as per my standing instructions, played a CD from my car's "MSV-Song-Bank" and there came a wonderful number
"THULLIYODUM KAALGAL ENGAY" from the film 'Periya Idathu Penn".
I heard this song for the first time only about a year back - thanks to the 'MSV encyclopedia' Mr Sabesan, who gave this casette to me.
I listened, listened and keep listening, probably for 100th time in the last one year and I was cursing myself like ' How the hell you missed this song all these years ?'
The more I listen the more I get attracted to the song - in fact that is the speciality of any MSV's song !
During my visit to the US last year, self, my wife Vasantha and Ram were listening to the song a couple of dozen times as we were travelling in a train from NY to Washington.
Let me stop the Prelude and come to my analysis of the song.
A beautiful violin flow, flawless flute and a Guitar piece set a grand stage for TMS to start
THULLIYODUM KAALGAL ENGEY
THOONDIL PODUM KANKAL ENGEY .. flute ‘ tat tat tat’
THULLIYODUM .. KANGAL ENGEY ..
Nanjundaiya links this line to the next line with his wonderful flute piece
KALLAPPARVAI POVATHENGEY
KANNICHELVAMEY . (TMS)
Here Mellisaimannar gives the signature piece of the song:
A guitar strike and humming OOOooooo . (You fall flat here itself !)
What a great imagination of the Master .
This Guitar and Humming keep coming at the end of each Charanam to link Flow to Pallavi.
Here enters PSusheel from a different level
MAALAIDA THEDI SONNAL
MANJALUKKU THOODU SONNAN
PAALARUNTHA NAAL KURITHAN
PANJANAIYAI VIRITHU VAITHAAN
PAALARUNTHA NAAL KURITHAN
PANJANAIYAI VIRITHU VITHAAN
Guitar..OOOOooooo. (marvelous)
The beauty pieces of the song are :
• The Guitar and humming
• Three different ‘Thaala Nadai’ in every Charam – which make you swing your head automatically to match the rhythm
• Flute interludes linking lines
• Violin flows in a different style
PS’s a wonderful humming AAAA Aha ahaha Ohoho
in between.
Last few lines of the song
“VAZHVATHENDRU INAINDUVITTOM
VANJAMINDRI MAHIZHNTHIRUPPOM’
What a great Lyrics explaining the bondage of the lovers !
Is there anybody now to write such Lyrics ?
The song ends with a humming by TMS and PS
accompanied by a violin flow which smoothly
flows in the opposite direction of the lyrics flow ..
What a great Creation by our Master !
Let me stop this as I am getting emotional.
I request all of you to right away listen to the song
To understand its greatness !!
Bye

Dear MsvRamki Sir,
So happy I am, to see your emotional elaborations on the great Song. Thank you very much. As younger followers, we need your freq contributions... like when the Volley Ball tends to droop down, a pair of hands imparting the required energy to push it up again.
I am so sorry...I missed this forum for a longer duration. Lots of pleasant surprises and invaluable gifts added during the past 15 ~ 20 days!
Once again, thank u very much for energizing us.

This is a wonderful song which I did'nt have a chance to hear till last May, when my parents visited US during that month. Credit to my dad. This is one of the very few songs for which I saw the video as well, for the first time. The whole month we were listening to it umpteen number of times each day - during travel, before sleep, first thing in the morning etc!
What an absolute Melody from the master!!! _________________ Ramkumar |
