" Oru Naal Iravil Kann Urakkam Pidikkavillai"
Song from the Film 'Panathottam'
Sung by P Susheela
Lyrics Kaviyarasar Kannadasan
Music ; Who else ? Mellisai Mannar M S Viswanathan

A song which mesmerised me so much all these years from the time I had listened during my college days. In fact after a gap of almost
20 years I heard it again about a month back - Thanks to Anantha and Sabesan, our MSVTIMES members who had prompted me to listen in a TV channel. What a great song it is !

The speciality of this song is the breathtaking 'brigaas' or 'sangathees'- My humble opinion is no one else can even think of giving such great Sangathees, as our master has done.

Now let us analyse the song :

The song starts without any preludes and with PS's wonderful rendering - exactly the way our Master would have asked her to sing :

Oru Naaaaal Iravil Kann Urakkam Pidikka villai
Varauvaaaaaan kannan Ena ninaithen marrakavillai

Note the sangathi in Oru Naaaaal - Ah how nice it would be.
Then the way 'Varuvaaaaaan' is sung - amazing !

continues .....

Sorry.. I started playing the song on the headphone from my ipod
now, and I realised the mistake.. The song actually starts with a
beautifful prelude - a lulluby bells and a violins,

The flute interlude in the pallavi - great !

After the pallavi, wonderful flow of guitar, violin and flute and sarangi, starts the charanam 1.

THIRUNAAL THEDI THOZHIYAR KOODI CHENDRAAR THIRUMBAVILLAI
THINAIYUM PANAIYAAY VALARNDE-
IRU VIZHIKAL ARUMBAVILLAI

Thirunaaal thedi - listen to the rendering of naal !
Sangathi in CHENDRAAR
Sangathi in each of the following words - great !

Interlude before charam 2 - a nice sarangee and violin flow - How could you give such wonderful interludes - MSV sir ?

Now Charanam 2 :

IRAVIL ULAVUM THIRUDAN AVAN ENDRAAN

The presentation of this charanam is totally different from Charanam 1 -
A totally a new phenomenon - I don't whether any MD's or even Carnatik musicians have ever done this till date !

Sangathis in each of the word -

THIRUDAATHU ORU NAALUM KAADAL ILLAI ENDREN
THIRUDAATHU ORU NAALUM KAADAL ILLAI ENDREN

two different sangathis in each of the words in the first time and
second time. Especially listen to the brigaas during the second time
rendering of the line - everytime I hear I go to a different world !

ENAIYE AVAN PAAL KODUTHEN -
EN IRAIVAN THIRUDAVILLAI

and IRAIVAN THIRUDAVILLAI

amazing lines of the song and especially when IRAVAN THIRUDAVILLAI is sung again , PS renders so beautifully exactly the way MSV wanted her to sing !

" En Iraivan (MSV) Thirudivittan - En idayathai'

I am definitely not able to explain clearly every piece of wonders created by the Master in this song but you can understand only if you listen to this yourself now .

The song is in psusheel.org site under 'Tamil' 'Raresongs' page no. 19.

Any of our members - Saradha, Bala, Sampat, Vaidy or anyone -
if you can add your analysis about the song in your own style - after listening to the song again - it will be great !!

Will wait for your analysis

If you listen to the song - I assure you the lyric will become a reality - because you won't like to sleep but listen to the song again and again !!

My wife Vasantha's comments are also added in this analysis.

MSV Creates !

Ramki.

Dear Uncle,
You have chosen the right song @ the right time to revive our forum as it had not been very active for a while !!!!! ..Thanks ..

It is an amazing song indeed....

1. I admire this song for its amazing SARANGI...in the Ist and IInd interludes and subtly in the back ground!!!!

2. PSuseela's mersmerising voice with beautiful sangathis ....when she sings (Ilayum Palayaai ...valarnthaen....with beautiful and tuff brighas)

3. Another beauty of this song , as you say , is the totally UNEXPECTED descend in the pallavi "VARUVAAAN KANNAN..." which would infact make us sleep against the lyrics...(Kannurakkam Pidikka villai......) !!!

4. The VIOLIN ensemble - they are played in such a soothing way that we feel as if we are put in a cradle and someone is swinging it !!!

5. Both the charanams are different.... The first charanam starts with "Thirunaal Thedi Thozhiyar Koodi..." while the second starts with different notes when PS sings "Iravil Ulavum Thirudan....."

I feel this song is one of the many Saroja Devi-PS-MSV solos.. :

1. Aalayamani - Paalum Pazhamum
2. Manaatam Thanga - Aalayamani
3. Meeney Meeney Meenamma - En Kadamai
4. Love Birds - Anbe Vaa
5. Oru Naal Iravil - PanaThottam

and the list goes on...

Thanks for reminding this beautiful song......!!!

MSV RULES !!!

mr. ramki

an amazing analysis about the wonderful song 'orunaal iravil' from panathottam.

after you mentioned only, i am bringing the song in my mind word by word. wow..... each and every word has beautiful sangathis rendered by suseela.

(not only msv sir, tms, suseela are also the great gifts given by god to the tamil film music).

yes, you correctly analysed that the first charanam and the second charanam have entirely different style, which the onle and only our msv sir can do.

thanks once again sir, for your delicious feast and we expect more and more from you.

i hope our s.balaji sir will eloborate this anaysis more, in his own style.

(sari, idhu maathiri arputha paadalgal eppothu makkalaal marakkap pattana?. 'poda...poda...punnaakku' gal thamizh thiraiyai aakramikka thodangiya piragaa?)

Dear Ramki & Venkat,

Amazing analysis and observation. I feel like the 12th man here, part of the team but nothing to add to the score!!! You have said everything about this song... may be a one liner to add to whatever you have said, it's one of my favourite songs too!!!

I absolutely agree with Irene's observation also!!! Keep it up Irene!

Dear Ramki

Excellent writing . please write more like this .

I would like to point out one thing here. This one is dream song and nothing extraordinary in picturisation and does not require tune like this. But MSV MADE IT . Clear example how dedicated is our MASTER.

Dear Dad,

Great article to read, as soon as I landed here. Excellent start. I personally know the level of "MSV knowledge" you have. And now our club has started to know that knowledge. Expecting your analysis from the huge collection of cassettes titled "Melodies of M.S.Viswanathan" in our dining hall!

Dear Balaji

Sorry ( No.. I am very happy !) for driving you crazy listening to this great number of MSV, many times. I am sure, you won't be able to stop
listening. You will continue listening , at least once a day, for the rest of of your life ! Such is the mesmerising effect of the song !

With very little instruments, MSV depended only on the PS's rendering of the sangathis what he had taught her during the recording . See the confidence level of our master ! ONLY MSV CAN DO THIS !

As you have told, I will defintely play this song to Sri MSV, read carefully the reactions/expresssions on his face and ask him the 'paadal pirandha kathai '.

Anbudan
Ramki
