POLICE KARAN MAGAL – II
The crux of the story and the roles played by artistes
As the name of the movie suggests, it pertains to a police man [constable] and his daughter. The strength of the plot gains value from an unflinching police constable who is impeccably honest and never permits personal difficulties to impede the operation of law. The constable has a son and a daughter who have absolute respect for the values imposed by the father and they dare not attempt the common privileges normally sought by adult children. The policeman’s son has a friend who is a ‘play boy’ and is fond of flirting. Accidentally, the ‘play boy’ visits his friend and manages to cast his eye on the innocent girl of the house. Being a play boy, he slowly entices the girl into his trap while the rest of the family is just unaware of the boy’s clandestine progress into the young girl’s life. The gullible girl falls a victim only to be duped by the boy to bear the agony of cheating besides having to live through the nightmare of father’s ‘no-nonsense” attitude with the prospect of some unbearable punishment. When the policeman realizes the calamity at home, every member of the household duly receives his reprimand despite their honest innocence in the matter. Of course the son of the constable bears greater brunt and is a victim of circumstances. All his efforts to bring the boy to wed his sister fail; under some strange circumstances at last when the boy reconciles to marry her, it is too late as the girl is already in the clutches of death. Though a story, B S Ramiah’s portrayal of characters is a perfect replica of the sufferings of honest people in our midst. The handling of situations by the director and the artistes have given us a lesson to read and understand human behaviour under such ‘down to earth’ situations.
S V Sahasranamam as the constable had played remarkably well. While his son [ R Muthuraman] and daughter [Vijayakumari], playboy [ Balaji] have lent excellent credence to the respective roles.
The choice of locations befitting the lower middle class life of the central characters and some sophisticated locales for the playboy’s indulgence added to the value of acceptability. Immaculate support had come from lyrics and music in elevating the treatment to its tasteful richness.
More to come…. K.Raman MADURAI
