Shri Msv excelled as Music director for nearly 25 years. It is very very difficult to assign a particular year as the best. My reasoning for 1964 being the glorious year is attributed to the release of Karnan. The movie had 13 gems and 2 of them was not in the movie. Many of us know that it took just 2 days to do the job. Work of Msv transcended age barriers. It will not be hyperbole if Shri Msv is called an hero of this movie.
Further scrutiny of 64, will certainly give a feeling as 64 being the most defining year in the illustrious career of Shri Msv. Pudhiya paravai, pachai villaku, andavan katalai ,padagoti are the films where all the songs were hits. Not to forget the two lovely numbers , Meena Meena and yerathu yerathu in en kadamai. Parakkum panthu and palakku vanga are 2 outstanding numbers in panakara kudumbam.
Kali Kovil, Kadilikka Nermalai and karuppu panam are movies which are devoid of big heros. Shri Msv gave extraordinary numbers. To me Nan unnai serentha from Kalai kovil is the best duet song.
Iam certianly enjoying all the works of Shri Msv, but certainly not able to escape from the feeling of year 64 being special.

Truly so! One of the landmark years of his career. Such memorable songs in this particular year, each in a definitive genre of its own, yet to be overshadowed. Glorious sixties! |

The other important movies for which MSV (with TKR) composed music in 1964 are -
Deiva Thaai
Kai Kodutha Deivam
Server Sundaram
Vaazhkai Vaazhvadharke
As we all know, all the songs in all these movies were super duper hits.
The total number of movies for which MSV(TKR) scored music in 1964 was 16. Incredible.

Outstanding year 1964 - Undoubtedly .
May I also add emphatically that the history of tamil cinema witnessed the wonderful musical year ever - 1964 .
Sad that during this year or the preceding one, the duo might have had all the differences of opinion and misunderstandings culminating to the inevitable separation . What is really remarkable is that despite their individual differences, they continued to deliver stunning melodies...
Imagine the duo continuing their partnership for another 5 years and we would have seen 25 movies each year with 5 songs for 5 years totalling around 600 plus of jewels ....
No doubt, MSV continued to give glorious songs and his magic continued for long but the flavour was different , not that extrordinary melody which is somewhat not present in both of them... Can I say that MSV deliberately chose to avoid the MSV-KR style and adopted altogether a different pattern ..
We are the losers ........... |

It appears that TKR had not actively participated in the composition since several months before their parting their ways. This can be confirmed from Shyam's spech in our last anniversary when he said that he was asked to play violin for Thanga ratham vanthathu in Kalaikovil though he was not well versed in carnatic music, presumably because TKR was not present. It is quite possible many of the compositions of 1964 are MSV's solos, though they carried the name of the duo.
There was no abrupt change in the style of the music after the duo got separated. The change happened quickly but followed a smooth transition like the seamless wonders in MSV's compositions. It is very likely that MSV had deliberately changed his style. After all the duo's style had not been constant. The style in the early 60's was different from their style in 50's.
TKR's record as a solo composer will show that his contribution to the compositions done by the duo has been overrated! _________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)

The separation happened in 1964 itself. The following facts will confirm that:
1. Only MSV and Kannadasan went to Bangalore for composing the Karnan songs (which we have got to know through many sources, including MSV Himself).
2. If you see the “Avalukkenna” song in ‘Server Sundaram’ with MSV conducting the orchestra, you will not find TKR.
3. During the stage shows (I had attended at least 2-3 shows in 1964), it was only MSV who was conducting the shows and TKR was not to be seen.
