Vincent’s association with Venus pictures proved a turning point to Tamil film picturisation as much as to himself. Yes, his work in the legendary movie “Uthamaputhiran” stands testimony to his lighting skills. I refer to the ‘double’ act frames of Sivaji Ganesan, where artistes appear in the same frames rendered to perfection.
The perfection that I speak of relates to the ‘masking’ technique adopted by AV. Getting the same artiste appear twice in the same frames as two different look-alikes is traditionally done by masking one half of the film while picturizing the actor in one half and later mask the other half and re-shoot on the same film with the actor now in the new half; when the film is viewed for full frames an illusion of the same person in 2 places is created.
Film-masking technique suffers the risk of showing up a central dividing line [however faint it may be] betraying the efforts of the cinematographer. Vincent’s urge for perfection in image –recording made him develop a technique of his own; it was ‘light masking’ or better still –‘lighting mask’. Vincent would carefully light a part of the scene and leave the rest ‘dark for the film’. The artiste would first work in the lit half; subsequently, by lighting the other half [light-blinding the previously recorded part of the scene] the actor would be registered as the 2nd character in the scene. As the twin recording is precisely balanced by lighting, the viewer would never feel ‘half frames’ in a scene. Obviously, to rely on balanced lighting, the cinematographer’s knowledge of the reflective properties of the objects on the scene and the film’s responses to an array of light arrangements on the scene must be exceptionally accurate to bring forth surprisingly pleasant presentation.
Let us remember that we are talking of times around 1950s when a small error would demand a total repeat costing a huge outlay to the movie-maker by way of time and money. Though AV had shown how to use ‘lighting mask’, very few ever dared doing it. It is just the beginning about A .Vincent. I have enough to share
