‘Pon ezhil pooththadhu pudhu vAnil’
Dear Friends,
This particular song from “kalangarai viLakkom” is another mesmerism of MSV rendered by TMS -PS. Of course, MSV is visible through the piece of 1965-‘66.
There have been persistent questions on the lyricist, more because the lyrical phrases look absolutely poetic and hint of the prospect of KD’s contribution, though the piece is credited to Panju Arunachalam. At this late distance it is futile to fix the lyricist – for, whoever has done it, the piece is marvelous by the sheer structuring.
The poetic element ‘rhyme’ is rich by its all pervasive presence through the number- especially across the charanam frames; equally captivating is the terminological relevance [ often rhyme runs over reason destroying the latter]. But, this is an exceptional item where rhyme has powerfully catered to reason! Rather the rhyme stands in grand justification of word play which pours out emotion [needless to tell that MSV has had a rich forage to drive the tune /orchestration to a scale, pitching the song to a glorious height in total justification of the term ‘composition’].
Just let us recall the sophistication of phraseology in charanam segments
TMS ‘thennai vanathinil’ [ ‘vanam’ is more poetic than the traditional ‘thoppu’]
‘eNNaththai’ [rhymes with ‘thennai’ of previous line]-- ‘vAdugirEn’
‘un iru kaN pattu puN patta nenjaththil’
‘un pattu kai pada -----------------------------------------------------‘pAdugirEn’
PS ‘thennavan manraththu’ ‘senthamizh paN koNdu’
‘vandhadhu pon vaNdu’ ‘ pAdikkoNdu’
‘sendradhu poonthendral’ ‘aadikkoNdu’
Not that these are the only segments to consider; the whole song is rich in expressive rhymes especially those at the winding phase are more thrust-ful at
‘ennudal enbadhu unnudal enrapin’ ‘ennidam kObam koLLUvadhO and ‘onril onrAna pin thannai thandhAna pin ‘unnidam nAn enna solluvadhO’ .
Obviously MSV has beautified all these spots by his emotive tune and imaginative orchestration. Please wait for us recall those MSV spots in the song.
Warm regards K.Raman Madurai. _________________ Prof. K. Raman
