Quote: | A Hindustani semi classical style. Normally for pathos the tempo is slow. But given this situation the emotions erupts in between. This is nicely portrayed by the sitar interlude and the speed of the charanam. This movie was remade in Hindi 'dil ek mandir'. The north indian composers SJ did not notice this aspect and produced a ordinary sitar phrase. No complaints about the tune but similiar emotion is missing. South Indian composer excelled in Hindustani music. But north Indian composer ??? |

Murali sir!
Excellent choice. Last year I also had a chance to hear you speak about this song. Now the details, in depth, are so interesting to understand.
The Hindustani base of this song, and the choice of MM's musical instruments are marvellous! Only God (alone) knows how MM conceives such a song! The emotionally loaded jugalbandi of the sitar/saarangi combo with one of the best tabla/dholak accompaniments ever created in the history of Indian film music, shall we say?
Unfathomable creation! No wonder such marvels cannot be emulated by anyone or synthesised by any other MD....
Thanks,
Sai |

dear Murali
As usual your write up is as great as melodies from the master . we are short of adjectives .
i just want to concur two points - this song is cut out for PS, cannot fit in any one else .this is one of the master pieces of KD-MSV-PS no question about that .
the second point on usage of shenpy Sitar Santoor tabla or any instruments north of Vindya's are mostly used better by MSV and his team much much (you can add any number you want ) than any one in the industry may be vatsan can dispute or agree --
continue your great trend _________________ vijayakrishnan |

_________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)

‘sonnadhu nee dhAnA?’
Dear Friends,
This particular song from ‘nenjil Or aalayam’ is a crown in the jewel of PS. Of course the crown has been a gift to PS from all the composers in general and MSV in specific. A range of PS songs from MSV’s compositions have been instant hits and have captivated the listeners for all time to come. ‘sonnadhu nee dhAnA’ simply hijacked the listeners by its rendition of emotions to a precise scale. To me the song is an epitome of virtues elegantly woven to yield a large canvas portraying the emotions of a devout wife, fighting to save her husband from the claws of death from cancer.
In this endeavour, KD- MSV have dealt the item to its logical end. But, what have admirably helped the ‘elevation’ of this piece are the earlier songs in the same movie; 1 rendered by the former lover of the girl –now a Doctor entrusted with the responsibility of saving the husband. 2. the song by the patient While the heroine has had a love-life, her loyalties to her husband are unquestionably pure. Equally, the Doctor has been such a genuine lover that he honours the sentiments of the lady and does his best and saves the husband’s life. However, the husband unaware of the earlier friendship between the Doctor and the lady, infers the earlier background but does not suspect his wife’s fidelity. So, all the 3 characters stay in the limits of decency with distinct but interconnected mission. The Doctor quietly buries his memories of love and chooses to take extraordinary care to save the husband. The patient [husband] expects to die and seeks to advise his wife to marry the doctor in the event of his succumbing to the disease himself. The wife does not wish to entertain the thought of her reverting to Doctor and wants only her husband to survive and preclude the option. All the three stand relieved of the predicament while, the Doctor drops dead after saving her husband from the dreaded disease. The finer emotions of the plot have been brilliantly handled by the lyrics and tunes for the songs in this movie. Among the songs, three are quite important [one each by the Doctor, the patient and the wife in predicament]. Enough if we look at the charaNam stretches carrying crux of the story.
Doctor’s song ‘engirundhAlum vAzhga’ [AL Raghavan]
Critical Charanam ‘varuvAi ena nAn thanimaiyil ninrEn,
vandhadhu vandhai thuNaiyudan vandhAi
thuNaivarAi kAkkum kadamaiyum thandhAi
thooyavaLE nee vAzhga’
Patient’s song ‘ninaippadhellAm nadandhu vittAl’ [PBS]
Critical Charanam ‘1000 vAsal idhayam adil 1000 eNNangaL udhayam
yAro varuvAr yAro iruuppAr varuvadhum pOvadhum theriyAdhu
oruvar mattum kudi irundhal thunbam Edhumillai
onrirukka onru vandhAl enrum amaidhi illai’
Lady’s song “sonnadhu nee dhAnA” [PS]
Crical charaNam ‘innoru kaigaLilE yAr yAr nAnA’
Enai marandhAyA eEn eEn eEn ennyuirE’
These lyric frames have been set to tune to carry the rich emotions to a height in portraying the purity of characters. Where are such story treatments these days?
Warm regards

Dear Murali,
Wonderful writing on one of the wonder creations of MM !
The song's construction (sorry, I cannot use this word since it 'happens' when our Master composes! ) of the song, after reading your article, looks amazing!
The line ' sonnathu Nee thaanaa' (like the the words 'kandane Seethaiyai' of Hanuman to Lord Rama' , time ratio of Pallavi to Charanam, the reason why Charanam's is faster, closing of the song not with usual Pallavi, but a phrase of anupallavi..... Great analysis, Murali !
Just looking at the lyrics and touching The Harmonium, it 'happens' like this in
Him ? Oh God !!

Great write-up NYM !!! Strangely enough, MSV the "raaga agnostic", atleast while discussing music in general, excitedly blurted out "Jaunpuri" when a mention of this song was made !!! So unlike him !!! He said "Jaunpuri"yil amainthathu !!! And our immediate quip to that raaga allusion was "well sir, 'sammatham thAnA' stretches outside of Jaunpuri" for which I am sure his response would have been one of his beaten to death, cliched phrases. A casual travel through the lyrics would indicate why "sammatham thAnA" was carried through with a conspicuous tonic shift. First things first, "sonnathu nee thAnA" is sheer incredulity heaped on top of a heap of intense imploration. She is indeed alarmed that her soul mate could conjure up such a resolution to her future predicament. MSV, based on KD's lyrics gives the top priority to the incredulousness, the effect of the surprise, earth shaking request placed by her husband. Now MSV rips the melody and pastes it onto a different canvas, a tonic shift they call it technically at "sammatham thAnA", after all the almost accusatory imploration needs to exist on its own and deserves a special place of pride in the emotional drama, why would he not place it on a separate pedestal, namely a shift in tone !!! NYM, I look at it this way, the pallavi is set to a very slow pace (11 beat cycle as told to us by Thumba Shekhar) to indicate the disposition of a woman thoroughly startled, shaken our of her sensibilities and in the process of getting to terms with some new reality, not yet sure footed is she !!!! The faster pace at the charanams indicate a certain amount of comfort level with the shock dished out by her husband and ofcourse depicts a forceful explanation to her husband of why she is offended by it all as well !!!
Once again, a great write-up !!! There has not been an occasion where the repeat of "sol" and that of "yen" have not me left me as shaken up and as the chief protagonist herself !!!! To lighten things up, there were some perverted critics up in arms those days against the way "sol" was pronounced, they wanted that to be "chol. chol. chol"........Guess they needed to be reminded that it was a human being singing the song and not a human being's best friend outside of the human race, a member of the canine family !!! |

NYM, the semblance of a dissonance in your posting was the mention of the Hindi counterpart. It does not deserve to be even quoted as the North Indian answer to "sonnathu nee thAnA". Jaikishen, like Ilaiyaraja always insisted on composing the tune first and what you have hotch-potch of a filler called song. Shankar (of the S-J fame) actually did approach Sridhar on the sly and told him that Jaikishen's tunes will not satiate the demands of S-J fans and that he himself had several worthy replacements. Sridhar then told Shankar that was indeed happy with the options offered by Jaikishen !! I am not saying that Shankar would have done a better job, because both S and J were after all spoilt by Raj Kapoor's tame composing values of wanting songs to be simple enough to be "singable" by the common man. Well...being simple is one, being simplistic is bordering on the infantile. |

Vatsan,
On the purists' intransigence on the pronunciation of 'sol,' I think they have not fully grasped the subtleties of Tamil pronunciation. Admittedly, Tamil doesn't have the alphabet S but the sound S is very much there. Just as the letter 'க' stands for both ka and ga (leaving out the kha and gha, which in my opinion are superfluous), the letter ச stands for both sa and cha. When the word starting with ச comes in the beginning of a sentence, it is generally ( I am reluctant to say 'always' because I am aware that there could be exceptions!) be pronounced as 'sa' as in sangam, sol, saattai etc. Only when a lord starting with the letter ச comes in the middle of a sentence, it is sometimes (but not always) pronounced as cha. It is 'Sangam vaLarththa thamizh' but 'Thamizhch changgam). 'sol avanidam' but 'varach chol avanai.'
The distinction can be observed in another PS' song, 'Sollach cholla inikkuthadaa' composed by KVM. In fact, a few months back, PS herself corrected a participant of Supersinger when he/she sang 'solla solla inikkuthadaa."
The purists should note that even a Sanskrit word Chakra becomes Sakkaram in Tamil.
There are many songs like 'sollaththaan ninaikkiREn,' 'sollaathE yaarum keeTTal' 'sollavo sugamaana kathai sollavo' etc. where this pronunciation sa is used.
Vatsan, I am sure you will understand that I am not addressing you but those whom you referred to in your post! _________________ P Rengaswami (9381409380)

Dear Vatsan sir,
Very beautifully analysed! S-J indeed brought out simple tunes, with some simple orchestration as noticed by you, with probably both of them composing tunes separately in almost many of their films. This used to be the regular feature in all their films. What could be believed perhaps is the fact that Jaikishen, being an admirer and friend of MM, adapted MM's tunes, in general, and especially for the remake movies with original score by MM. Even the Rafi version 'yaad na jaaye' for the 'Engirinthaalum vaazhga' song is very nearly another tune of MM, resembling a PBS/MM song (Yaar siritthaal enna??). But then, as you so emphatically wrote, there can be no real comparison, as such a thing does not exist when it is MM!
Thanks,
Sai |

"yAr sirithhAl enna" was inspired from "yAd na jAyE". Infact the song was born out of the common interest both MSV and PBS discovered in each other for the Hindi original They loved it and wanted an off-shoot of a song from the Hindi original and thus was born "yAr sirithhAl enna". The interesting part is that Director Sridhar forced Jaikishen to finish the line "dil kyun bhulAyE" as in Besame Mucho pretty much as he had later forced MSV to deliver a similar Keeravani punch at "ponnAna kai pattu..puNNAna kannangaLE". S-J orchestration especially S's orchestration used to be tremendous and scintillating with Jaikishen being more Ghazalesque. With respect to tuning, with Raj Kapoor's suggestion they started composing one-liner charanams with the same tune being repeated twice with differenct words and voila...the pallavi would be back again !!! Wasted potential is all I can say about S-J !!!! |

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your nice clarifications. Your appreciation of the real potential of S-J is so informative. Their high-pitched orchestrations in many films, and equally, their simple compositions in some films, all possessed catchy tunes that people still remember.
Thanks,
Sai |
