That is why Kannadasan is a Genius.

he is able to impregnate the emotive expression in the words .

MSV . ONE AND ONLY MSV .

So he is able to defy his own grammar. That is why MSV cannot be put in a frame. He is unintelligible.

NYM, great post....thoroughly enjoyed reading it. True, Film Music needs to have feelings and its various dimensions or a mix of feelings as appropriate, as the impetus providing factor and nothing else. Musicality should be woven around the above values and should confine itself to the contours as defined by those very values. Listen to this song and you would have heard the giggle of a woman in love, felt her cuddling up to her thoughts of her man, experienced her coyness, felt the air set forth by her flapping wings and seen her spirits soar taking you along with her in this frolicsome romantic ditty. And yes, "she" made you tap your feet with romantic expectancy as well, regardless of your marital status and age...and oh well, I am referring to the song as "she", the gender orientation as expressed by the song itself. Needless to say, a film composer should have experienced life in its entirety and very importantly, savoured and soaked in the various paradigms of sringara ras, the ras that provides the fizz, and may I add, viewed a woman as a work of art from close proximity. MSV as we have discovered through his music and during our meetings with him, is a bundle of sizzling, simmering feelings threatening to blow apart this surface veneer he has postulated for himself, an etiquette replete with overused and hackneyed phrases , words and gesticulations. The pallavi, the look and feel of it is a marvel in itself but the real drama starts in the charanams, the start of which is the unfolding, the blossoming of the permanent child in a woman that comes up during moments of intimacy with or post an affirmative nod from, her partner. To keep things simple and non-technical, the song until the tail-end of the charanams flows through "festive" notes, say white keys. The bouncy "muthhamoru pakkam vanthAlum" commences with a black key, a conspicuous tone shift, a change in colouration and aptly incorporated and flits through another such note. A shift in tone to depict a shift in dynamics. And NYM your observation with regards to "Adattum" is laudable.....the stress, the repetition ...that's sheer drama and a great deal of food for thought for the Director who needs to build in as much drama in his picturization. The references to kannam reminds me of kavignar's "kannathhai pArthhEn munnAdi, patta kAyathhai sonnathu kaNNAdi", now here a pointed reference as a precursor to the slap she is going to be at the receiving end of. Verily, a film song should be an event , a depiction of a drama and MSV has done them all. No wonder his successors felt deeply insecure !!!!

NYM ji,

A grand pick ! You know, I love this song more for its tune setting !

See how the pallavi itself has been structured.

Kalyaaana sandhayile oru pen paaarkkum neramidhu !!

Who on earth can stretch the 2 words ...the end result is an astonishing tune !

He didnt stop here....

En ullam indrai nee pen endradhu......

Real master piece ....but one needs special taste to identify such exceptional number....YOU have it Smile

Many many thanks SIr. Salute to you

Hai Balaji,

Yes. The very first word 'Kalyana Sandaile' is a tricky notes arrangement. The swarams that speak is sa-pa. Normally composers tend to catch note 'ri' which is the 2nd note after 'sa' which is the first. But to catch a note 'pa' which is 5th after 'sa' is very rare.

Yes. Vatsan. I indeed checked up Yesterday in my Key Board after a long gap of 6 months. I find he had shifted the keys to 'ni1' with 'ga2' at 'muthamoru pakkam' and in the third line 'muthirai en meni kaanattum' he is shifting to 'ga1' along with 'ga1'. So this creates complete tune transition.
Assuming the scale to be 'C' then this transition would render b flat major(ni1-ri2-ma1) at the first line 'muthamoru pakkam' and e flat majot 'ga1-pa-ni1' in the third line 'muthirai en meni kaanattum'.

And he comes back to 'ga2' with 'sa' (C major) sa-ga2-pa during the dummy words humming.

And Yes. You are right. If the scale is C major(all white keys) as assumed by us then the transition to 'ni1' and 'ga1' would be black keys.

But interestingly during the charanam begging at 'maalai soodum' he touches the note 'ma2' and comes back to 'ma1' which gives the feeling of Amir Kalyani. It is just at that place in the first and second charanam only.

So all in all various notes have been weaved as per his imagination and only at appropriate places and not as a whole as a Raga. In fact the song has as many as 10 notes('ri1' and 'da1' are left out) out of 12 that are available.

And finally Thanks Sai.

Now the million dollar question......isaikku isainthu varigaL vanthathA allathu vArthaigaLin isai vadivathhai nAm kEtkirOmA ? kodi asanthathum kAtru vanthathA.............kodi asainthathA? Tricky stuff but given the lack of set meters for the pallavi and in general, a poet's predilection to stay within a stated meter, I am tempted to conclude that the tune for the pallavi came first . Now with the charanams, the tune for the first two lines indicates the arrival of words first, with MSV handling consecutive lines with the same meter through shift in tonality. Furthermore, that is a phrasing in Kalyani esp. around "mAlai soodum" MSV has unconsciously put to use for set meters earlier too. Coming to the bubbly part commencing with "muthhamoru pakkam...", what came first? I plump for the idea that words did because there is some discernable pattern to the insertion of words. There is a natural flow to the formulation of lines and the ideas propounded as well. Given that, MSV's meter dismantling and twisting techniques at "Adattum" highlights tremendous presence of composing mind, ever ready to receive and implement ideas at any given point in time....all only to ensure comprehensive coverage of the situation to be portrayed. "Adattum" and the subsequent "letting the hair down" frolic is pure drama. Did MSV teach womanhood how to express joy ?!!!?

Vatsan,
Very interesting debate. I think the Pallavi could have come first and MSV tuning it but breaking the sandhams.

Just give a thought of these lines

This is what KD would have written and MSV would have made it look like

The red letters are MSV' s addition.

But as far as charanam I thing the whole 8 lines could have been written by KD at once like the below.

And again MSV making it like this

I also feel KD could have written the first 4 lines in the Charanam which MSV could have tuned it but since he could not negotiate the 4th line of the charanam with Pallave, he could have asked KD to write 4 more lines and in that could have tried to do the negotiation.

And in that he could have noticed the word 'aadattum' which could have given him the spark for the dummy words humming, with which he could have negotiated the charnam to bring bank to the Pallavi. And on seeing the word 'nithirai en kannil' he have also thought of making that split second pause at 'kannil'.

We do not know. We are just speculating.

One way to understand this to ask MSV himself. But we know what to expect from him.

He will ask who is the MD who tuned such a nice song!!!!!!

Hello Vatsan / NYM and other friends,

Matter - Meter for this song ...

I had this doubt in the beginning itself and strongly feel that its MATTER first simply because of the disorderly Pallavi lyrics...

And see how the pallavi ends....en ullam indrennai nee penn endradhu !!!

Absolutely no chance of meter domination here Laughing

However, from charanam onwards its MSV's domination on METER...

Agree with you on the charanam front to a great extent. KD would have continued with additional four lines because the lyrics itself seems incomplete when you consider its import. With respect to pallavi, bypassing MSV's expansion on the meter, it not common for a poet to come up with two lines with different meters for a pallavi and therefore my conclusion is different.

NYM ji,

Have you forgotten PUttham pudhiya poo chendaattam ( punnagai seivaaloo ) Maharaja oru maharaani.

MSV goes from one extreme to another extreme Shocked

Many a times, MSV is a mystery...

For ex : Minnal paadhi thendral paadhi unnai eendradho...

All are high notes......may be its for TMS....

While P.Susheela's turn comes, its lower notes....Nilavena valarattum kavidhai ullam.....

What to say ?? Unsolvable mystery Master Very Happy

ellOrum nalam vAzha is a case in point...of a swaram "long jump" and that seems to impart a character to the pallavi, renders it sharp and striking and sharp enough for it to wake up a mind in slumber. During his halcyon days, I am sure MSV never created a pallavi that "soft pedalled" and remained tentative. MSV we know gives utmost importance to the pallavi as that decides the saleability of the song regardless of what its innards contain. We also know that he put KD through a lot of trouble on several ocassions to extract a pallavi that would be "statement making" and stand up for special attention. Needless to say, as a result of this, several of KD's pallavis have become titles for movies, piercing as they are, they have the incisiveness to penetrate the psyche of a casual onlooker and generate some interest in him. "kAlangaLil avaL vasantham", "enna thavam seithEn", "oLimayamAna ethirkAlam" are examples that spring to mind immediatley.
